Oleksandr Usyk accused of using illegal inhaler in Tyson Fury fight, turns out to be his cross

Tyson Fury fans are already trying to discredit Oleksandr Usyk’s win on Saturday, claiming the Ukrainian sensation used an illegal inhaler in between rounds.

Boxing has its first unified heavyweight world champion in 25 years after Usyk delivered a stunning performance against ‘The Gypsy King’ during their 12-round affair in the Saudi Arabian capital of Riyadh. While Fury appeared to have things well in hand in the early going, Usyk turned it up in the later rounds — particularly in the ninth when he was credited with a knockdown after overwhelming Fury with an onslaught of strikes.

However, some skeptics were quick to cry foul after a clip of Usyk in his corner began making the rounds on social media. The clip, which you can see below, had commenters accusing ‘The Cat’ of using an inhaler between rounds seven and eight.

As it turns out, there was no inhaler. The object in question turned out to be a cross.

After taking a fairly significant beating to the body, Usyk bounced back beautifully, showing off his conditioning compared to that of the significantly bigger Brit. Fortunately, rumors of him using an inhaler were quickly debunked as it could have resulted in a disqualification, putting a big fat blemish on an otherwise spectacular fight.

Following the fight, Fury insisted that he was the rightful winner after coming up on the wrong side of a split decision. He even went so far as to suggest that the war between Ukraine — Usyk’s home country — and Russia played a role in the scoring.

“You know his country’s at war, so people are siding for the country at war,’’ Fury said during a post-fight interview. “Make no mistake, I won that fight, and I’ll be back.’’

While some of the scores provided by the presiding judges raised a few eyebrows, the consensus appears to approve of Usyk’s win.

Regardless, Fury will have the chance to even the series via a rematch clause that was worked into their initial fight contract. No official details have been revealed, but the two are rumored to run it back in October.

“I always say it’s about getting paid and getting laid,” Tyson Fury said. “We did that tonight. I thank Oleksandr for the good fight. It was a close fight, you know? I believe I thought I did enough, but I’m not a judge. I can’t judge a fight while I’m boxing it. If they would have said to me in the last round or whatever, ‘You’re down, go out and try and finish him,’ I would have done that.”

“But everyone in the corner believed we were up. All I had to do was just keep boxing, do what I was doing, and I thought we were getting it. But it was what it was. I’m not going to cry about spilt milk.” (H/T MMA Fighting)

Fury would continue, paying respect to Usyk and his monumental effort which helped produce a thrilling undisputed heavyweight title fight.

I was having a lot of fun actually. I don’t know if it looked like it, but I was playing around, hands behind my back, and I was enjoying it. He’s a good fighter, Oleksandr, I was catching him and he was catching me, and it was a good fight, so I hope you guys enjoyed it as much as I did getting punched in the face.”

Oleksandr Usyk delivers emotional tribute to his late father following epic win over Tyson Fury: 'I know he's here'

It was an emotional night for Oleksandr Usyk.

Stepping inside the ring for a long-awaited unification clash with Tyson Fury, the Ukrainian superstar defied the odds and handed ‘The Gypsy King’ the first loss of his career, securing a split decision victory to become the undisputed unified heavyweight world champion.

Oleksandr Usyk

Addressing members of the media following his 22nd career win, ‘The Cat’ was understandably emotional, particularly when talking about his father who died shortly after his Olympic victory in 2012.

“I miss my father… I said to my father, ‘Hey, listen. You live there, I live here. Please, no coming for me. I love you.’ I know he’s here,” an emotional Usyk said with the support of those in attendance.

Oleksandr Usyk’s promoter believes the referee saved Tyson Fury in round nine

After falling behind early, Oleksandr Usyk poured it on in the later rounds and even scored a knockdown in the ninth round after Fury used the ropes to keep himself upright following an onslaught of strikes from his opponent. Usyk’s promoter Alex Krassyuk suggested that the referee essentially screwed his fighter out of a knockout, saying:

“I believe the referee saved Tyson from a knockout and stole the ninth-round knockout, which should have happened,” Krassyuk said.

However, Usyk wasn’t overly concerned with the ruling, especially since he walked away with the biggest win of his career regardless.

“No knock-out, no problem,” Usyk added. “I don’t think about it because we had a win.”

With a rematch clause built into their contract, we will likely see Usyk and Fury step back inside the squared circle later this year with rumors already swirling that the two will run it back in Riyadh this October.

Fury, who had been sidelined since his victory over former UFC heavyweight champion, Francis Ngannou late last year in Saudi Arabia, struggled with the timing and aggression of Oleksandr Usyk in the opening salvo of three rounds, before finding his range with a signature uppercut midway through the fight.

However, the British star and his corner were firmly sent to panic stations moments before the ninth round ended, with Usyk timing a wonderful left hook upstairs, rocking Fury and sending him back to the ropes with his legs far from study beneath him.

And looking to force the issue in the remaining seconds, Usyk tried to find a knockout blow on the feet with Fury stumbling and narrowly evading, before meeting the canvas.

Forced to a standing eight count and saved from the bell, Fury failed to overcome rounds in favor of the Ukrainian favorite in the remaining three frames — suffering his first professional defeat in boxing in the process.

Welcoming the chance to fight Usyk in the future in an immediate championship rematch, Fury claimed that given Ukraine’s ongoing war with invading, Russia, fans, pundits and judges alike were naturally going to favor Oleksandr Usyk if the bout went to the scorecards — before proclaiming he should have won the bout via decision.
