Chael Sonnen thinks it was bizarre that Deontay Wilder’s second cornerman threw the towel in against Tyson Fury. This past Saturday, Wilder and Fury had their highly-anticipated rematch. There, it was the “Gypsy King” who got the job done as he TKO’d Wilder in the seventh round. But, the fight ended due to the corner […]

Tyson Fury’s promoter Frank Warren revealed he would be “disappointed” by the prospect of a trilogy fight with Deontay Wilder.
Fury outclassed Wilder en route to seventh-round TKO win to become the new WBC heavyweight champion this past weekend. Given how many felt Fury won the first fight as well, most observers would prefer for him to face Anthony Joshua next in a title unification fight rather than trilogy with the American.
However, Wilder has a rematch clause as part of the fight contract and revealed on Monday that he planned on exercising it. Warren can’t do anything about that, even though he prefers his fighter face Joshua next.
“I prefer to go straight to Joshua, but that is the contract,” Warren told BBC Radio 5 live. “It has to be honoured unless we can reach some accommodation for him to step aside. We could pay him to step aside if he wants to do that, but that is his choice.”
That is unlikely to be the case. Wilder will still feel he can win in a rematch while a third fight with Fury will likely be his most lucrative yet.
“It’s a bit of both,” Warren said. “It would be lucrative for him, but I have spoken to his manager and Deontay does believe he has the beating of Tyson, and he can knock him out. I don’t believe that. I fancied Tyson to stop him before the fight at the weekend. If he insists on the fight, we’re locked into it.”
Joshua, meanwhile, will likely defend his titles against IBF mandatory Kubrat Pulev. However, Warren still feels a title unification fight can happen this year provided both fighters win their next outings.
“I want it before the end of the year, provided Anthony Joshua does not get defeated by anyone else,” he added.
Do you think Wilder has a chance in a trilogy fight with Fury?

‘The Gypsy King’ dethroned Deontay Wilder in dominating fashion on Saturday night. The 31-year-old Brit won every minute of the fight on route to a seventh-round stoppage victory against the American. In a rematch of the pairs highly entertaining and controversial first fight which took place in December 2018. Despite again dominating large periods of the fight Fury was only awarded a draw on the judge’s scorecards.
This morning he arrived back in the UK via Manchester airport. He was mobbed by fans and received a hero’s welcome. Check out the video below taken by Sky Sports News.
Today’s scenes are certainly in contrast to Fury’s experience post-fight after beating long-time heavyweight king Wladimir Klitschko in 2015.
The huge upset
win was met with lots of negative press attention surrounding Fury. Not long
after he spiralled into a depression and ballooned to almost 400lbs in weight.
His struggles with anxiety, depression and substance abuse has been well
document during his return to the top. It only makes this latest win so much
more impressive considering the dark place he has risen from.
Now attentions will turn to who is next for Fury. The consensus number one at heavyweight could potentially face Wilder for a third time. A clause in the contract allows the American to trigger a rematch, should he choose to. Although many believe he is best to steer clear of the trilogy fight.
The other option is Olympic gold medalist turned world champion Anthony Joshua. A fight between Fury and ‘AJ’ would be the biggest in British boxing history. Eddie Hearn has come out and spoke about his desire to make the fight in the past two days. It’ll be interesting to see if a deal can be made for this, the biggest fight in boxing.

Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has revealed he will do all he can to make Anthony Joshua vs. Tyson Fury a reality this year.
Following Fury’s WBC heavyweight title win over Deontay Wilder over the weekend, Hearn called for a title unification fight with current unified heavyweight champion Joshua in the summer.
Many were skeptical give how a Joshua vs. Wilder title unification fight never materialized two years ago. However, Hearn says some broadcasting issues aside, everyone involved wants to make this fight happen.
“He’s [Fury] promoted by [Top Rank CEO] Bob Arum predominantly,” Hearn told Sky Sports. “Frank Warren is also involved, MTK are his management company. I’ve spoke to Top Rank and I’ve spoke to MTK straight after the fight. Everybody is very clear on this. Everybody wants this fight – Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury, MTK, Top Rank, Frank Warren, Matchroom. There are some hurdles to overcome on the broadcasting, but nothing too much.
“I promise you this fight will happen. If we have to fight (Kubrat) Pulev, we’ve got to beat Pulev, and if he has to fight Wilder, he’s got to beat Wilder again. Both of those things will happen. Fury will beat Wilder again and Joshua will knock Pulev clean out, despite Bob Arum telling us very differently. You will get this fight. We will do everything that it takes to make this fight.”
As Hearn mentioned, Kubrat Pulev is set to challenge Joshua next as his IBF mandatory. Meanwhile, Wilder has revealed that he does plan on triggering his rematch clause. That means a summer title unification fight is out of the window.
But should both fighters get through those next bouts, Hearn is confident a big British showdown will occur, especially with both camps wanting the fight:
“Last time, you had us and Team Wilder and we were locking heads,” Hearn added. “Right now, you have two guys and two camps that genuinely want this fight, that genuinely will do everything that they can to make this fight. It is the only fight.
“When are we ever going to get the chance of two British world heavyweight champions fighting for the undisputed title against each other? It’s never happened before it will never happen again. We’d be clowns, we’d be idiots if we didn’t make this fight. We believe we win the fight, they believe they win the fight, so let’s see it.”

Deontay Wilder plans on exercising his rematch clause against Tyson Fury.
Wilder lost his WBC heavyweight title after he suffered a seventh-round TKO defeat to the Briton this past weekend. The American was knocked down twice during the encounter before getting overwhelmed by Fury, leading to his corner throwing in the towel.
However, Wilder claims Fury never hurt him at all. Instead, he blamed his defeat on his walkout costume which was a tribute to Black History Month.
“He didn’t hurt me at all, but the simple fact is … that my uniform was way too heavy for me,” Wilder told Yahoo Sports. “I didn’t have no legs from the beginning of the fight. In the third round, my legs were just shot all the way through. But I’m a warrior and people know that I’m a warrior. It could easily be told that I didn’t have legs or anything. A lot of people were telling me, ‘It looked like something was wrong with you.’ Something was, but when you’re in the ring, you have to bluff a lot of things. I tried my best to do so. I knew I didn’t have the legs because of my uniform.
“I was only able to put it on [for the first time] the night before but I didn’t think it was going to be that heavy. It weighed 40, 40-some pounds with the helmet and all the batteries. I wanted my tribute to be great for Black History Month. I wanted it to be good and I guess I put that before anything.”
“I am upset with Mark for the simple fact that we’ve talked about this many times and it’s not emotional,” Wilder explained. “It is not an emotional thing, it’s a principal thing. We’ve talked about this situation many, many years before this even happened. I said as a warrior, as a champion, as a leader, as a ruler, I want to go out on my shield. If I’m talking about going in and killing a man, I respect the same way. I abide by the same principal of receiving.
“So I told my team to never, ever, no matter what it may look like, to never throw the towel in with me because I’m a special kind. I still had five rounds left. No matter what it looked like, I was still in the fight. … I understand he was looking out for me and trying to do what he felt was right, but this is my life and my career and he has to accept my wishes.”
Wilder also had words for referee Kenny Bayless who he claims warned him about many violations in the locker room only to allow Fury to do the same.
“The referee told me specifically that if I hit him in the back of the head or hit him on the break, he’d disqualify me,” Wilder said. “But I guess that was only directed toward me, because he allowed Fury to do those things. That’s the one thing that bothered me of everything.”
Fury seemed to have struck Wilder in the back of the head for his first knockdown. However, “The Gypsy King” was notably deducted a point in the fifth round for pushing and grabbing.
Regardless, Wilder will exercise his rematch clause and then head to Africa for vacation at the end of March.
Despite all his post-fight comments, he did reserve plenty of praise for Fury:
“I’m super happy for Tyson Fury and I really want to give him my complete congratulations,” Wilder added. “He’s had a lot of great accomplishments in his career and this is right there with all of them. I’m very excited about his career and what he has done. He deserves a lot of credit.”
