So much for April 27 as a possible date for the Deontay Wilder vs. Tyson Fury WBC heavyweight title rematch.

According to Wilder’s co-manager Shelly Finkel, the April 27 date is now off the table (h/t Boxing Talk).

Wilder and Fury fought to a controversial split draw in their first go-round last December. After the classic fight, the WBC ordered a rematch. However, a May 18 date was shot down and now April 27 is a no-go. The WBC will now reportedly begin to put pressure on both boxers’ managers.

“I have personally been in communications with both parties regarding the matter,” WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman said in a recent interview with Sunsport.

“Both have expressed that there is goodwill negotiations and are moving in good direction. I will continue to monitor and will assess by Monday if there is need for WBC intervention. The goal is always for promoters to reach agreements and this is a very important fight for the world of boxing and it is our duty to exhaust all remedies to reach the goal.”

Anytime astronomical sums of money are on the line it takes a long time for both parties to get on the same page. That being said, these men are largely responsible for reviving heavyweight boxing. So hopefully everyone plays well and we get this fight sometime in the first half of 2019.

Boxing’s stagnating heavyweight division has seen a strong revival thanks to Wilder, Fury, and Anthony Joshua. Yet the inability to get the potentially huge fights made could halt that momentum.

Two events featuring boxing heavyweight star Tyson Fury have been called off due to some threatening graffiti, per the Irish Times.

The events were scheduled to take place in both Dublin and Cork over the next few days. The Irish Times quotes the Garda Press Office, who claims management at Dublin’s Helix, one of the venues for the scheduled events, found threatening graffiti suggesting a “repeat of the Regency shooting”.

For those of you unfamiliar with the Regency shooting, it occurred back in 2016. Armed men wearing masks entered the Regency hotel during weigh-ins for a boxing event. David Byrne, a former training partner of Conor McGregor, was killed in the attack. Two others suffered non-fatal injuries.

Bryne was a suspected high-level member of the Kinahan Cartel, who have been alleged to distribute illegal drugs throughout Ireland. Patrick Hutch, a member of rival gang the Hutch Gang, was charged with Bryne’s murder.

Back in March of 2017, Tyson Fury took a selfie with Daniel Kinahan, who has been accused of running the Kinahan Cartel’s day-to-day operations:

It looks like former boxing heavyweight king Wladimir Klitschko is reportedly eying a comeback.

Klitschko hasn’t laced up his gloves since his 2017 defeat to Anthony Joshua. Prior to that, Klitschko suffered his first loss in over a decade to Tyson Fury. With the defeat to Fury, Klitschko lost the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, IBO, The Ring, and lineal heavyweight championships. Fury bested the Russian after 12 rounds via unanimous decision.

After over a year off, Klitschko returned in attempt to regain his heavyweight straps. This time, however, he found himself against new heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua. He shared the ring with the talented Englishman for 11 rounds before being stopped by Joshua. However, it was a highly-competitive contest in which Klitschko earned a knockdown at one point.

Klitschko attempted to earn a rematch with Joshua after his loss, but a deal was never able to be made. As a result, Klitschko ultimately decided to retire from fighting. But after seeing the resurgence in the heavyweight division thanks to the likes of Joshua, Fury, and Deontay Wilder, the 43-years-old is eager to return.

Potential Three Fights

According to a report from Mike Coppinger of FOX Sports, Klitschko was discussing a three-fight deal with the DAZN streaming service. The fights included a tune-up fight, and rematches against Fury and Joshua (in that order):

“Sources: Former heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko was discussing a three-fight deal with DAZN that would end his retirement. First fight would be a tune-up, followed by rematches with Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua, in that order”

However, Klitschko reportedly told Sports Illustrated that is not true, and he’s instead negotiating a fight with Dillian Whyte. Klitschko initially didn’t have an interest in fighting Whyte, but that has all changed since his eagerness to return to boxing has ramped up:

“Klitschko told @SIChrisMannix it wasn’t true that he would discussing a fight with Dillian Whyte. He in fact wasn’t interested in boxing Whyte, but he’s keen on a comeback”
