UFC 139 Results: What a Dan Henderson Win Means to the LHW Division

Although no title will be on the line for tonight’s main event between former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Dan Henderson (28-8) and former UFC light heavyweight champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua (20-5), a title shot may be.

Henderson has already claimed his spot as one of the division’s best fighters, and his success in the UFC, Pride and Strikeforce has solidified him as a living legend in mixed martial arts.

He will take on Rua in a five-round non-title fight later tonight, and Rua is only one fight removed from losing his title to Jon Jones in March.

With a victory over Rua, Henderson will be quick to get a title shot versus the winner of the fight between Jones and Lyoto Machida, which goes down at UFC 140 in December. Jones’ other victories in 2011 include those over Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Ryan Bader.

Even if he doesn’t get a title shot, he has recently stated that he wants to end his career in the UFC, and it will probably come in the light heavyweight division. A rematch with Anderson Silva could be interesting to fans, but only if it comes in the 205-pound division. He lost to Silva back at UFC 82.

The light heavyweight division is one that has always been filled with most of MMA‘s fan-favorite fighters, and assuming no up-and-comers make their way to the top of the 205-pound rankings, it will be fighters like Henderson who challenge for the title.

Win or lose, Henderson will always be a fight or two away from a UFC title.

Shogun Rua punches Dan Henderson at UFC 139.Dan Henderson, Maurico “Shogun” Rua, Cung Le and Wanderlei Silva were all awarded bonuses for the honor of Fight of the Night Saturday at UFC 139 in San Jose.

Rarely handed out to more than one fight, UFC president Dana White said he had no choice but to call the two co-headlining bouts the Fight of the Night at UFC 139. Each post-fight bonus winner received an extra $70,000.

Henderson (29-8) won a five-round battle for the ages, edging out Rua (20-6) on scores of 48-47 across the board.

In middleweight action between two dangerous strikers, Silva (34-11-1) fought back from a difficult first round to spoil Le (7-2)’s UFC debut with brutal knees and punches to bring on the referee stoppage in the second.

Michael McDonald (14-1) earned Knockout of the Night with an explosive first-round finish over Alex Soto (6-1-1). The 20-year-old bantamweight needed only 56 seconds to score his third UFC win.

Urijah Faber
(26-5) took home Submission of the Night for his guillotine choke over Brian Bowles (10-2). With the win, Faber earns a rematch with bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz.

The UFC’s debut at the HP Pavilion drew an attendance of 13,173 for a gate of $1.268 million, according to White.

UFC 139 Results: Miguel Torres Simply Too Much for Nick Pace

Former WEC bantamweight champion Miguel Torres was back in the Octagon as he battled Nick Pace.

Torres was last in action at UFC 130, where he dropped a close decision to recent title challenger Demetrious Johnson.

Pace, meanwhile, failed to make weight for the contest and forfeited a portion of his fight purse.  The fighter dropped a decision to Ivan Menjivar at UFC 133 in August.

The two fighters took their time to find their range.  Torres connected with multiple kicks to the outside of Pace’s lead leg.  Torres landed a right hand that backed up Pace.  Pace answered with double jab to slow Torres’ advance.  Pace scored with knees to the body.  Pace looked for a takedown against the fence, but Torres kept the fight standing.  Torres latched onto a kimura and put Pace on the ground, but only for a moment.  Torres continued to fire combinations as the round ended, landing both a right hand and left head kick.

Torres again opened the round with kicks.  Torres continued to keep Pace at bay with his jab.  Pace secured a takedown at the three minute mark and landed in the guard of Torres.  Torres fired elbows and punches from his back.  Pace passed to side control with two minutes left in the round, but Torres used his hips to stand.  Torres forced Pace against the fence and mixed in short left hands and knees to the body until the round came to a close.

In the final round, Pace appeared desperate early.  Torres delivered a right hand followed by a teep to the body.  Pace swung wildly but failed to connect.  Pace gained the clinch and landed a knee before Torres pushed him away.  The fight moved to the fence and Torres again scored with knees.  Pace flurried with a minute left in the fight, but Torres put him against the cage yet again.

Torres explained his strategy in the post-fight interview.  “I had to avoid his right hand.  He’s real durable.  I hit him with a lot of big shots,” Torres said.

Official Result: Miguel Torres def. Nick Pace by unanimous decision (30-27 x3)

In a fight that went over just one round, Seth Baczynski took down Matt Brown in a fight that Brown didn’t stand a chance at victory.

Baczynski was able to land punches up high throughout the first round and early into the second round. It was also clear from the get-go that it would be Brown up against the cage for most of the fight.

Baczynski showed to be a stronger, more confident fighter.

With the exception of several shots with the right and left knees to the body of Baczynski, Brown looked like he didn’t stand a fighting chance in the bout.

In the first round, Baczynski had a big-time takedown, one that set the tone for the rest of the fight shortly after.

To start out the second-round, another takedown for Baczynski would have Brown in a choke hold, one that Brown looked to have slipped out of, but simply had to tap out.

From the get-go, there was no question who the more impressive, more prepared fighter was in the match. Yet, had the fight continued on, Brown could have made the most of his body blows and possibly taken Baczynski out later in the fight.

Ultimately, Baczynski had the advantage in the bout with his solid attack. He consistently landed punches and had the ability to corner Brown and keep Brown on the defensive.

As a result, in the second round, Baczynski’s strength took a toll on Brown, as he was unable to escape the hold late in the match.

Regardless of the fortunate choke hold Baczynski was able to come up with, Baczynski would have eventually taken down Brown, as Brown showed he was not ready for this fight.

Aside from some knees to his opponent’s body, Brown seemed to be a fighter just trying to stay alive throughout the bout.

UFC 139 Live Blog: Shogun Rua vs. Dan Henderson Updates

Filed under:

Shogun Rua faces Dan Henderson at UFC 139.SAN JOSE, Calif. — This is the UFC 139 live blog for Mauricio “Shogun” Rua vs. Dan Henderson, the main event of tonight’s UFC pay-per-view from the HP Pavilion.

In this light heavyweight bout, Henderson (28-8) makes his return to the UFC after a two-year stint with Strikeforce. Henderson has won his last three fights, most recently a TKO over Fedor Emelianenko in July. Rua (20-5) lost his UFC belt in March to Jon Jones and then bounced back with a KO over Forrest Griffin in August.

The live blog is below.

Round 1: Referee Josh Rosenthal brings them to the center and they tough gloves to start us off. Rua tosses out a couple kicks and Hendo wastes no time blasting him with a big right hand just as Rua is reaching for a takedown. Rua is hurt. Hendo thinks about a guillotine, then releases it and fires away with a punch combo as Rua covers up. We’re barely a minute in and Rua is bleeding everywhere. Hendo drops him to the mat and just walks away rather than following into his guard. Good knee from Rua, but Henderson is unfazed. Rua tries for a takedown, but that’s going to be tough against Henderson. Rua fires off a big punch and now Hendo is down. He reaches for a single-leg as Rua hamerfists the side of his head, and it buys him enough time to recover. Hendo is backing away now, clearly wary of Rua’s power. They end the round in the clinch, both men grabbing some air. MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 for Henderson.

Round 2: Hendo starts the round with a little more respect for Rua’s power, looking for a takedown when the Brazilian moves in too close. They get stuck in a clinch against the fence, but it’s only temporary. Back in the center, Hendo lands a good right that sends Rua backwards, then slams him with some body shots when he covers up. They’re slugging it out in the center now, with both man getting his licks in. Hendo presses Rua against the fence and tries to sap some of his strength in close. Rua’s good and bloodied up, breathing out of his mouth. Rosenthal moves in to separate them, and Hendo has some words for the ref. Both men are looking a little worn, but Hendo manages one last good uppercut before the round ends. MMA Fighting scores it 10-9 for Henderson.

Dan Henderson has no shot against Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in the main event of UFC 139 on Saturday night.

Henderson was knocked down in the first round of his last two fights, and Shogun has so many effective ways to take Henderson down for a third straight time in the first round.

Shogun is way too quick for Henderson, who likes to use his strength to overpower opponents.

The problem with this strategy is that it opens the door for mistakes when Henderson fails to connect on his punches.

When Henderson inevitably throws some bad punches, Shogun will counter and punish him for his mistake. The result could be an early victory for Shogun. This fight could get ugly real quick for Henderson.

If Shogun prevents Henderson from getting off to a good early start then he will have no trouble winning the main event.

Henderson is simply overmatched, and he must connect on some major punches early to have a chance at winning.

Shogun will have a determined approach to this fight and pummel Henderson early and often.

He will embarrass Henderson early in this fight and I would be very shocked if the fight lasts more than three rounds.

Shogun’s combination of quickness, speed and agility will be way too much for Henderson to handle in this fight, and Shogun will knockout his opponent in the early rounds to win the main event of UFC 139.
