Brock Lesnar weighed in at 266 pounds and Alistair Overeem weighed in at 263 pounds. For UFC 141 this is a huge fight, literally and metaphorically.
The two heavyweights square off in what is a title elimination fight for the two former champions. Overeem could have had an easy road and fought right away for the title, but instead chose to face Lesnar and here we are.
I know this has been used several thousand times, and it is all we have heard/will hear before, during and after the fight, but this is the classic striker versus grappler match.
Alistair obviously owns the striking department. He is a former K-1 world kickboxing champion and utilizes a diverse array of strikes. Elbows, knees, punches, kicks, Brock will see everything.
But Brock’s standup is nothing to scoff at. It isn’t amazing and it won’t dazzle you, but it got him by until Cain Velasquez and Shane Carwin found out he doesn’t like to be punched. Honestly though, who likes getting punched? Especially by Carwin and Velasquez. I know I’d be at the back of the line for that one.
On the ground, though, it is the same thing. Brock owns the ground game here. He is a former national champion and All-American wrestler. If he comes out and takes down Overeem it will lead to two things.
No. 1, Overeem will gas out quicker and No. 2, Overeem will get beaten to a pulp. It would also be a good move for Lesnar if he gets hurt standing by Overeem. A quick takedown and he can take some time to fully recover and then beat Overeem.
Lesnar, though, has to be weary of Overeem and his guillotine choke. Much like Lesnar, Overeem’s ground game isn’t awful. I can’t see Overeem winning this fight by submission, though.
One of two things will happen in this fight: Overeem knocks out Brock in the first round or Brock takes Overeem down and pounds him out in the first or second.
I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if right out of the gate Lesnar shoots for the takedown. If he gets it, it will be a long round for Overeem.
I’m an Overeem fan, and I hope he wins, but I’m always inclined to take the wrestler over the striker in every fight. It will be a great fight, though, and send 2011 off in a bang—literally.

Anticipation has been rapidly growing for this Friday’s UFC 141 as former champions Brock Lesnar and Alistair Overeem square off for a shot at the newly crowned heavyweight king, Junior dos Santos.
Although the battle of giants headlining the event is the fight most fans are looking forward to, another main card fight between two of the UFC’s scrappiest fighters will steal the show.
Lightweights Nate Diaz and Donald Cerrone are two fighters who are not afraid to go to war, both possessing well-rounded skill sets that should set off fireworks when the Octagon doors close tomorrow night.
If fans were not already excited for this bout based purely off these two warriors’ past performances, then their recent war of words should have surely piqued fans’ interest.
Cerrone is having the best year of his career, having gone 4-0 since making his UFC debut in a February Fight of the Night victory over Paul Kelly.
Since making the move from the WEC, Cerrone has taken out some of the most talented fighters in the lightweight division, defeating Dennis Siver and Charles Oliveira in his last two wins.
“The Cowboy” is known for his hard-nosed fighting style and his willingness to go to war with any challenger. An avid striker and former Muay Thai champion, Cerrone is also a solid grappler, with 13 of his victories coming via submission.
His style is very similar to Diaz’s, who is a great boxer and an experienced jiu-jitsu practitioner under Cesar Gracie. Diaz, like his brother Nick, is a scrappy fighter who can beat his opponent standing or on the ground.
The younger Diaz brother is coming off the biggest win of his career at UFC 135 in his return to the lightweight division, tapping out Pride legend Takanori Gomi. Owning wins over Melvin Guillard and Marcus Davis, Diaz is an experienced fighter that should be even more dangerous now that he is staying at 155 lbs.
Whereas most fighters’ judgments become clouded when they let trash talking get in their head, both Diaz and Cerrone are actually fueled by these war of words.
Their recent scuffle at the pre-fight press conference is just the tip of the iceberg as to what fans can expect when they enter the Octagon.
Lesnar versus Overeem may be the bout generating more buzz, but true fight fans will appreciate the intensity that Diaz and Cerrone will bring in their surefire war.

UFC 141 will feature the return of one of the UFC’s biggest draws in Brock Lesnar, the former UFC heavyweight champion.
He will go up against former Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem in one of the year’s most anticipated bouts Friday night.
It was recently determined that the winner of the bout will face current UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos, who defeated Cain Velasquez on the first UFC on FOX show.
After a second fight with diverticulitis, Lesnar will return to the cage for the first time in over a year to face Overeem. He was last seen getting pummeled by Velasquez in Oct. 2010.
Overeem will enter the bout with an extensive 35-11 record, including a current 10-fight win streak with victories over Brett Rogers, Fabricio Werdum and Kazuyuki Fujita.
In the co-main event, lightweight standouts Nate Diaz and Donald Cerrone will fight to determine the next top contender in the division.

In the fight that everyone has been talking about for the last 24 hours, top contenders Nate Diaz and Donald Cerrone face off with the winner inching closer to a title shot.
I know Dana was nervous with two Diaz brothers on the stage at the same time. Nate had a little problem with the weight, but 1 pound in one hour won’t be a problem.
The face off was a bunch of talking from Nate, with Cowboy nodding his head just letting him know that tomorrow night, it’s on.
Either this one ends early, or it’s a long, long war between two people that really don’t like each other.
Just a friendly reminder that we’ll have the video feed for tonight’s UFC 141 weigh-ins starting at 7:00 pm ET.
It’s worth tuning in to just to see what shenanigans the Diaz brothers get into.
In the meantime, make your predictions for tomorrow night in the comment section and we’ll revisit them next week and check out the video feed after the jump.
