Lesnar and Overeem will have huge ramifications on the heavyweight division for a long time to come. The winner will get a shot at new champion Junior dos Santos in 2012, while the loser will have work to do in order to climb into the title picture.

Brock Lesnar’s Keys to Victory

Don’t try to do too much too quick, and work the fight to the ground.

Being off for 14 months is hard enough. Being off for that long and having to go through another bout with diverticulitis makes things that much harder. Lesnar is a freak of nature, and he will need every bit of his athleticism in this fight.

He needs to let the fight come to him by waiting for Overeem to go for a big shot so that he can take him down. It will be hard for him to win a stand-up battle, so anything he can do to get this fight to the ground is going to be done.

Alistair Overeem’s Keys to Victory

Prove that he can avoid a takedown, and use his stand-up power to score a knockout.

The one distinct advantage that Overeem has in this fight is in the stand-up. We all know that Lesnar has difficulty taking punches, so he is going to try everything in his power to get the fight to the ground.

If he can frustrate Lesnar early by not going to the ground, he will control the tempo and force Lesnar into fighting a style that he isn’t comfortable with.

What They Are Saying

Brock Lesnar has never been one to make excuses. He tells things exactly like he sees them, and he knows how difficult his journey back to the Octagon has been. But in an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald, he said doesn’t want to talk about diverticulitis or use it as a crutch.

“I mean, I’ve answered a million questions about my health here. That’s the best that you can come up with today? I feel great, I feel very, very good coming into this fight. I can’t score it (the improvement in my health) on scales of one to 10. I mean, come on guys, I feel good,” he said.

After some controversy about Overeem’s drug test, he was finally able to get a conditional license to make this fight official. UFC president Dana White expressed his joy, and relief, on Twitter

Undercard Fight to Watch: Jacob Volkmann vs. Efrain Escudero

It is always dangerous predicting two ground fighters to have a good fight, because there is a chance that it could just turn into a battle for positioning for three rounds and turn into the worst fight on the card.

But Volkmann and Escudero are both so strong and effective on the ground that I expect we will see a number of submission attempts that make this fight worth seeing. Even if it goes to the judges, it should still feature enough action to make it exciting.

Main-Event Prediction

Lesnar vs. Overeem is the easiest fight in the world to analyze but so hard to predict because we don’t know how Lesnar’s body is going to react to the 14-month layoff.

The easy part is figuring out how the fight will be won. If Lesnar gets the fight to the ground, it’s over because Overeem has no ground game to speak of.

If Overeem is able to keep it standing and turn it into a battle of striking, he will win because Lesnar has never been good at defending himself against strong strikers.

In the end, there are more questions surrounding Lesnar in this fight than Overeem, so I see “The Dutch Cyclone” walking away with a victory in his first UFC fight.

UFC 141: Oddsmakers and UFC Undisputed 3 Predict Alistair Overeem Win

UFC Undisputed 3 has all but mirrored what the Oddsmakers predict will transpire at the UFC 141 main event between Alistair Overeem and Brock Lesnar in less than a week’s time.

The makers of UFC Undisputed 3, THQ, ran 25 simulations with “The Demolition Man” just edging out Lesnar by one fight.

At present, the Oddsmakers have the former Strikeforce heavyweight champion as the slight favourite heading into the bout, which more or less reflects the simulation results of the video game.

The final prediction, however, went in favor of Overeem who ended the fight via KO in 4:38 of the first round.

According to 5thround.com, the betting odds for Overeem checked in at -140 whilst underdog Lesnar checked in at +110. Nevertheless, the bookmaker’s odds are subject to change as we head into the latter stages of the fight.

Below are some of the stats and additional information for the 25 simulations from Heavy.com:

Lesnar, a former NCAA champion wrestler, attempted a total of 287 takedowns, or about 11.5 per fight.

The game claims the two fighters rocked each other an equal amount of times.

Two of Lesnar’s 12 wins came by arm triangle submissions—the same way he beat Shane Carwin at UFC 116, his last victory before losing the UFC heavyweight title to Cain Velasquez at UFC 121.

Overeem reversed Lesnar’s dominant ground position an average of two times per fight.

Of Overeem’s 13 wins in the simulation, 12 came by knockout—a staggering 92 percent.

Former UFC heavyweight champion Lesnar (5-2 MMA, 4-2 UFC) is returning to the Octagon after more than a year on the sidelines, having lost his UFC heavyweight title to Cain Velasquez.

During that period, he also suffered a reoccurrence of diverticulitis which threw a spanner in the works of his proposed  The Ultimate Fighting Season 13 Finale matchup with Junior “Cigano” Dos Santos.

On the other hand, “The Reem” (35-11-1NC MMA) is riding a 10-fight winning streak, but has also had his fair share of distractions.

First, he had to move his training camp back to Holland to care for his ailing mother. Second, there was the urine test debacle with the NSAC (Nevada State Athletic Commission), which has been resolved to a certain degree as he was given a conditional license to fight at the UFC 141 event.

At present, both former champions are in pristine condition and primed for ultimate battle in an elimination bout for the UFC heavyweight crown currently held by Cigano.

UFC Undisputed 3 is due for release on Xbox and PlayStation 3 on Feb. 14, 2012.

UFC 141 is set for Dec. 30, 2011 at the MGM Grand Gardens Arena, Las Vegas, Nev.

UFC 141: Why Jon Fitch Is Stuck Between a Rock and a Hard Place

One would expect to find the consensus No.2-ranked welterweight in the world near the top of a UFC pay-per-view. But at UFC 141, Jon Fitch finds himself being in the featured fight of the evening.

Fitch is set to square off against Johny Hendricks, and it will be Fitch’s first fight back from a shoulder injury.

While Fitch was sitting on the shelf, Hendricks has won his last two bouts with his KO of TJ Waldburger being knockout of the night.

Hendricks sports an impressive 11-1 record and has great amateur wrestling credentials.

Fitch, to his credit, is considered to be the second-best welterweight in the world behind Georges St-Pierre.

The match should be exciting as the two’s wrestling talents could negate each other which could lead to a standup battle between the two foes.

But that’s not the problem for Fitch in this fight.

It’s the fact that Fitch isn’t fighting someone on his same talent level. Like my piece about his teammate Josh Koscheck, Fitch deserves better than Hendricks.

Fans know Fitch is in Dana White‘s doghouse, and that likely has a lot to do with his opponent. The timing of Fitch’s return also presents a problem as many of the top names are either injured or booked.

Besides facing lesser competition, Fitch stands to gain very little should he emerge victorious.

Hendricks doesn’t have a big enough name to help Fitch gain any ground in the title hunt, and when you look at the list of Fitch’s last few opponents, names like BJ Penn and Thiago Alves, Hendricks means very little.

Should Fitch lose, he will almost certainly be buried in the welterweight division. He doesn’t have an exciting fighting style, little fan support or support from his boss.

He’s in a no-win scenario as he should beat Hendricks, but it won’t do anything for his career and if he loses his career goes down the drain quickly.
