A pair of welterweight bouts in Matt Brown vs. Chris Cope and Justin Edwards vs. Mike Stumpf has been lined up for UFC 143, the UFC announced Friday.

The two verbally agreed-upon bouts happens on the Feb. 4 SuperBowl weekend card in Las Vegas, headlined by Nick Diaz vs. Carlos Condit for the interim UFC welterweight title.

Brown (12-11) out of The Ultimate Fighter season seven has struggled the last two years, dropping four of his last five fights. In his most recent fight, Brown tapped out to a Seth Baczynski guillotine choke at UFC 139 in November. Despite the losses, Brown remains on the UFC roster for his always-game fighting style and willingness to take fights as a replacement.

Cope (5-2), who competed on TUF 13 earlier this year, won his UFC debut against Chuck O’Neil in June, but lost by TKO to Che Mills at UFC 138 in November.

Edwards (7-2), also out of TUF 13, went one for three in UFC fights in 2011. His big win came against Wanderlei Silva’s prospect Jorge Lopez at UFC Fight Night 25 in September. His last fight was a decision loss to John Maguire at UFC 138.

Stumpf (11-3) made his UFC debut in September, losing by triangle choke to T.J. Waldburger at UFC Fight Night 25. The 28-year-old fights out of Team Curran in Crystal Lake, Ill.

Carlos Condit Opens as Favorite Over Nick Diaz at UFC 143

As if Nick Diaz needs a reason to motivate himself for his upcoming UFC 143 main event matchup with Carlos Condit — a bout that will determine a UFC interim welterweight champion — Diaz can turn to the oddsmakers for some fuel.

Diaz has voiced a displeasure at a perceived lack of respect for his achievements, and despite winning 11 fights in a row and vacating the Strikeforce welterweight belt to fight in the UFC, that apparently wasn’t quite enough for linesmakers, who installed Condit as the favorite at UFC 143.

Condit was only slightly favored in the opening line listed at several online sports books. He was listed at -125 while Diaz was -105.

Since then, however, bettors have already closed the gap, and the fight is now a pick ’em, with both fighters at -115.

At UFC 137, Diaz (26-7, 1 no contest) made his first start in the UFC since 2006 and romped in a unanimous decision win over BJ Penn. Afterward, he was bumped ahead of Condit and into a title fight with Georges St-Pierre, but a torn ACL sidelined the bout, paving the way for Diaz and Condit to collide.

Condit is also in the midst of a strong run, having won four in a row and 12 of his last 13 overall. He’s finished each of his last three opponents — Rory McDonald, Dan Hardy and Dong Hyun Kim — by KO or TKO.

UFC 143 takes place on Feb. 4 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

Booking Roundup: De Fries vs. Miocic at UFC on FUEL, Lamas Steps in for Koch Against Poirier at UFC 143

(DON’T MOVE ROB! There is the biggest hornet on your nose right now!)

A battle between undefeated heavyweights Stipe Miocic and Philip De Fries has recently been booked for the UFC’s upcoming debut on FUELTV, which transpires February 15th at the CenturyLink and Cornmeal Center in Omaha, Nebraska.

After starting off his professional career with five straight (T)KO victories, all coming within the first two rounds, Croatian-born Stipe Miocic scored a second round leglock submission over Bobby Brents to earn himself a call from the UFC. In his debut, Miocic would handle tough veteran Joey Beltran with a deft combination of leg kicks and takedowns en route to a unanimous decision victory. Though his choice to sport the same checkerboard trunks as the legendary Mirko Cro Cop would earn him the ire of many keyboard warriors across the nation, a win over De Fries, specifically a head kick KO, would certainly give him some breathing room. De Fries, on the other hand, had finished all of his opponents (excluding a No Contest against Dave Wilson) via submission before making his UFC debut, where he scored his own unanimous decision win over Rob Broughton at UFC 138.

After original opponent Eric Koch was forced to withdraw from their bout citing an unknown injury, featherweight wrecking machine Dustin Poirier was in need of an opponent to continue the four fight win streak he had built up starting back at WEC 52, which had included brilliant wins over Pablo Garza and Josh Grispi. It has been reported that fellow UFC on FOX victor Ricardo Lamas has stepped up to the challenge and will meet Poirier at UFC 143, which goes down February 4th from the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas and features an interim welterweight championship bout between Nick Diaz and Carlos Condit.

Lamas has built up a two fight streak of his own in his time under the Zuffa banner, following up a head kick TKO over Matt Grice with the aforementioned UFC on FOX win over Cub Swanson via second round arm triangle.

What say you, Potato Nation, who takes these?

Georges St-Pierre has already begun his first phase of rehabilitation after undergoing surgery last week to repair a knee injury, according to MMA mania.com.

The UFC welterweight champion tore his ACL earlier this month in preparation for his upcoming title bout against Nick Diaz at UFC 143. The injury would force the champion out of the anticipated matchup and allow Carlos Condit to step in as his replacement.

A picture was posted on St-Pierre’s Twitter account showing the champion in his first phase of rehab working in a Continuous Passive Motion machine. The CPM machine is designed to help joint recovery and they are traditionally used during the first stages of rehabilitation.

The 30-year-old has dominated the welterweight division for the last four years and has successfully defended the welterweight title six times.

St-Pierre is expected to be return in mid-2012, however his physician Dr. Sebastian Simard expects a quicker recovery and believes the champion will return in six-to-nine months.

Meanwhile, Diaz and Condit are slated to meet for the UFC interim welterweight crown and the winner will face St-Pierre in a unification title bout.

His next bout will be against another top competitor in Carlos Condit when they meet at UFC 143 for the UFC interim welterweight title. Diaz, who was originally scheduled to face Georges St-Pierre, is focused on his upcoming matchup with Condit, but he has his sights on an even bigger opportunity against the champion.

“I wanted to fight Georges St-Pierre, and I still want that fight when Georges comes back,” Diaz told Fightline.com. “Right now, I’m focused on beating Carlos Condit.”

One of the UFC’s most polarizing figures, Diaz found himself in the title picture after recently beating Penn at UFC 137 and then called out St-Pierre, who was sidelined with an ACL sprain at the time, and claimed that he was scared to face him.

The stage was set for a potential showdown between Diaz and St-Pierre, however, the champion was forced out of the bout after tearing his ACL, allowing Condit to face him instead. The winner will meet St-Pierre next year in a title unification bout.

Diaz is aware of Condit’s abilities, but he believes he is the superior fighter.

“He’s tough and he’s knocked a lot of guys out, but that doesn’t concern me. I know I’m a better fighter in all areas,” he said. “I’m gonna win that belt on February 4.”

UFC 143 is scheduled for February 4th, 2012, live from the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada.
