UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping wasted no time in lining up his first opponent. Once he’d knocked out Luke Rockhold at UFC 199 there were many options available, but Bisping only wanted one fight. The 37-year old wanted another fight with his old rival Dan Henderson. The ageing former Pride FC champion got one over on ‘The Count’ at UFC 100, handing him a highlight reel knockout loss that was both amazing and brutal.

The promotion picked up on the appeal of the rematch and ran with it, booking the two bitter enemies in for a second dance at UFC 204. The bout will go down in Manchester, England, but will air in line with US times. The main card will kick off at 3 AM local time. Since the fight was reported there’s been a lot of heat from Hendo and Bisping. The Englishman accused his American foe of taking steroids, also claiming Henderson would cheat for UFC 204.

Official Announcement

The promotion officially announced today that Bisping vs. Henderson would headline UFC 204. Six other big fights were also confirmed for the English card, but it’s that main event that has fans and fighters both happy and angry. Many feel the 45-year old Henderson is jumping too many legitimate contenders in the queue at 185 pounds. These contenders include Yoel Romero, Chris Weidman and Jacare Souza to name a few.

Bisping took to Instagram today to respond to the announcement, and also gave a message to the haters:

The era of ‘money fights’ is officially here, and it’s not just Bisping cashing in on this current trend. Look no further than Tyron Woodley or Conor McGregor to see that rankings are rapidly losing their already waning legitimacy. Whether this is good or bad for the sport is yet to be seen, but it certainly makes for some very interesting fights.

For instance, how crazy would it be if Henderson rode off in to the sunset with a UFC title on his back? That’s the ultimate mic-drop moment.

Here’s how the UFC 204 card looks so far:

Michael Bisping v Dan Henderson
Gegard Mousasi v Vitor Belfort
Jimi Manuwa v Ovince Saint Preux
Stefan Struve v Ruslan Magomedov
Brad Pickett v Iuri Alcantara
Davey Grant v Damian Stasiak
Adriano Martins v Leonardo Santos

2016 has been quite the year so far for UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping, as the longtime veteran finally added his crowning achievement of UFC gold to his resume with a shocking first-round knockout of heavily favored Luke Rockhold at June 4’s UFC 199 from Los Angeles.

Since that day, the speculation has run wild about just whom Bisping would face next in the top-heavy middleweight landscape, with obvious bouts against top contenders Chris Weidman and Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza lining up as the most glaring examples.

Weidman, who was scheduled to rematch Rockhold at UFC 199 before a neck injury forced him out, has been extremely vocal with the opinion that Bisping is “running,” but Souza has also stirred that stance up himself. But Bisping eschewed both top fighters for a bout against his 45-year-old arch rival Dan Henderson, who knocked out Hector Lombard at UFC 199, in the main event of October’s UFC 204 from Manchester, England.

Bisping had some forceful words for Weidman’s accusations in an interview with The Daily Star Report (via Bloody Elbow), stating that the logic of a match with Weidman doesn’t add up:

“The logic just doesn’t stack up because I just knocked out a guy in three minutes that beat the living daylights out of you. So why would I be running scared from him?

“The fact is you lost the fight. Ok, you were scheduled for a title fight against Luke because that was a rematch.”

“The Count” believes the former champion should go and win a big fight before he gets a shot at his title:

“But it’s not a rematch with me, we’ve never fought before. So you need to win a fight. You don’t get title shots coming off a loss unless your name is Chael Sonnen. So go and win a fight, Chris.”

Bisping then closed by turning the tables on Weidman, insinuating that it was actually he who was running scared:

“Who is really scared here? Are you worried you won’t win a fight? Is that why you want a title shot straight away?

“Go and beat Luke like your were supposed to. If you beat Luke I’ll still be here. I plan on keeping this.”

UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz completed perhaps the greatest career comeback of all-time against TJ Dillashaw. After only competing once over the course of five years due to repetitive surgeries, two torn ACL’s, having the groin of a cadaver transplanted and being stripped of the title, ‘The Dominator’ was eventually paired with ‘The Viper’ at UFC Fight Night 81. Although previously untouchable, there were still serious doubts about Cruz’s ability to come back after such a rough journey.

Taking the split decision win over Dillashaw in a fight of the night performance on January 17 this year, the king of the bantamweights was back. Following such a harrowing set of circumstances, Cruz’s win was spectacular on many levels. An old rivalry was once again reignited with Urijah Faber and Team Alpha Male, one that would be settled at UFC 199.

A. Dom Cruz

Cruz danced and boxed his way around ‘The California Kid’ to settle his rivalry in their rubber match. Once again celebrating with UFC gold in hand, ‘The Dominator’ had also proved himself quite the colourful character in the media. The beef with Dillashaw was still going on though, as was the feud with TAM. Cody Garbrandt has been calling out the champ non stop recently, angling for the next crack at the coveted strap.

Then out of nowhere comes former Alpha Male striking coach Duane Ludwig. The UFC veteran and current trainer of former champ TJ Dillashaw sent out the following post to his official Instagram:

In case you don’t get the reference to peanut butter–Urijah Faber once revealed a comical story about ‘Bang’ selling PB from the front desk of Team Alpha Male HQ in Sacramento, CA. This was around the time that Faber had an ongoing feud with Ludwig, and they were allegedly at each other’s throats over sponsorship money.

It’s a funny enough troll job, but if Dillashaw or Ludwig think it’ll lead to a near future title shot, would they be right? Having defeated Raphael Assuncao by unanimous decision at UFC 200, ‘The Viper’ certainly eliminated another contender, but now he has Cruz’s beef with Alpha Male to contend with too. ‘Killashaw’ famously left TAM on bad terms to train at Elevation Fight Team in Denver, CO, before losing the title to Cruz.

Mixed martial arts legend Dan Henderson has a very unique opportunity laying ahead of him, and it came about through unexpected circumstances. After Michael Bisping knocked out Luke Rockhold at UFC 199 to claim the middleweight title, ‘The Count’ called out ‘Hendo’ as his first title defense. Henderson was fresh off a stunning knockout win over Hector Lombard on the same night, but many believed the 45-year old would retire on the back of that victory.

The situation was made more heated by the fact Bisping accused the former Pride FC two-weight champion of abusing TRT (testosterone replacement therapy) before their first fight. UFC 100 was the scene of their first battle, and it ended with one of the most recognizable moments in MMA history. ‘Hendo’ knocked Bisping clean out to end their rivalry, but with Bisping’s new-found success the reports are they will do it all again at UFC 204.

Dan Henderson

Talking with Severe MMA during a recent podcast, ‘Hendo’ says he’s sure the fight will happen in October, and also talks about Bispng’s win over Rockhold and more:

“Yeah, I’m pretty sure it’s happening in October, I’m not sure where just yet. I think it’ll definitely happen, I’m excited to get in there and hopefully do the same thing as last time. Not too many people gave (Bisping) a chance to win (against Rockhold), including myself. I didn’t think he could out-point Luke, and Luke’s in good shape. Up until that fight I’d never seen him have knockout power. It’s good to see he’s got better, I think it surprised everybody, mostly Luke Rockhold. He did a good job.”

“I’m sure that he wants that one back, but that one will never get back. It’s instilled in the history books with some of the best knockouts, and I’m hoping to add another one to it.”

HendersonKOsBisping2

After Bisping accused 46-fight veteran of steroid abuse in a recent rant, Henderson says he still isn’t fond of guys with big mouths.

“I don’t really know him too much, I don’t hear very highly of him as a person. I’m not fond of guys who have big mouths like that, everybody is different. Whatever, I have no desire to hang out with he guy, he just talks out of his ass. He’s an asshole.”

“I’m sure he’s improved a lot overall, but so have I. It’s on me to make sure that my conditioning is there to go every round, as well as some tactics and game plan. It’s not an easy fight, it’s up to me to make it happen. I’m going to do my best to knock his ass out again.”

As well as the banter from the new champion, Henderson has been the target of some criticism from fellow fighters. Contenders such as Jacare Souza and Chris Weidman have voiced their displeasure over ‘Hendo’ leap frogging them for the title fight. Currently ranked at number 13, Henderson insists he never once asked for the title fight.

“I didn’t ask for it once, this is a fight that came about because the fans asked for it. They asked in such large numbers, the UFC and Dana White listen to the fans. It didn’t hurt that Bisping was asking for it too. I wasn’t sure if the Hector fight was my last one. For a title, for sure I’ll fight one more time. I’m definitely going to make the most of it.”

To have a title fight as the final step in Dan Henderson’s career is quit fitting, although the rankings may argue against it. Will he cap off an illustrious career by once again overcoming insane odds in a fashion we have now become accustomed to, or will it be one step too far?

Dan Henderson has been competing inside the mixed martial arts (MMA) cage since 1997 when he took on Crezio de Souza at the Brazil Open ’97, and competed again for the second time in his career that same night against Eric Smith to win the organization’s lightweight tournament.

Fast-forward nearly twenty years later, and at 45-years of age, ‘Hendo’ is still going strong as he is coming off of a highlight reel knockout of Cuban powerhouse Hector Lombard at UFC 199.

The knockout earned the future Hall of Famer a shot at UFC middleweight gold, against longtime foe, and newly crowned 185-pound champ, Michael Bisping.

In a recent interview with Talking Brawls Podcast on SevereMMA‘Hendo’ confirmed he will be stepping into the Octagon against Bisping for the middleweight throne, and also revealed that ‘win or lose’ he is prepared to hang up his gloves for good following the contest:

“That is my plan, win or lose I’m ready mentally to retire,” said Henderson. “I think it will definitely happen and I’m excited to get in there and hopefully do the same thing I did to him the last time.

I’m pretty sure it will be a pay-per-view and I’d expect that it happens relatively soon, possibly in the next couple of days. We should be able to get it figured out.”

While a title bout has been confirmed between the two rivals Henderson admits he is still waiting on a date for the contest, and claims that despite the fact that he is ready to walk away from the sport following his clash with ‘The Count’, he still feels he can go ‘another two, three years more.’

“I’m waiting to hear the exact date, and where but I’m almost positive it will happen, there’s no reason why it shouldn’t at this point.

My body could still probably go another two, three years more. I’ve put it through enough. I’m ready to take it a little bit easier, but still be involved in MMA doing something a little bit different than fighting.

I think I’ve heard a number of things but I believe it could be in a stadium over there in Manchester.”

Bisping and Henderson first met at UFC 100 in which the American delivered one of the most vicious knockout in the sport’s recent memory, and Bisping has been clamoring for an opportunity at vengeance ever since. Henderson has heard Bisping’s campaigns for another shot at him, and responded to him in one chilling sentence:

“Be careful what you ask for, you might just get it.”

While no date has yet been set on a meeting between the two 185-pounders, stay with LowKick for the latest on the location, date, and time for the epic showdown.

UFC 199 spelled the end of Luke Rockhold’s short reign as middleweight champion. After many years toiling on the fringe of the division’s truly elite, British star Michael Bisping finally reaped what he’d sewn. Knocking out ‘Rocky’ in the first round of their April encounter, ‘The Count’ put an interesting twist on the division’s top end. Much like Chuck Liddell had ‘unfinished business’ on his mind when he first won the 205-pound belt, Bisping wants revenge on his most brutal career loss. We are talking, of course, about Dan Henderson.

The legendary former Pride FC two-weight champion ‘Hendo’ owns perhaps the most recognizable knockout in MMA history, and it came against Bisping at the historic UFC 100 in 2009. After clobbering the Brit with his touted right hand, Henderson put in a flying forearm smash to the already ground ‘Count.’ For obvious reasons Bisping wants the chance at redemption, but circumstances make this fight very unpopular with the rest of the division.

Who wouldn't want another crack after getting smacked like this?
Who wouldn’t want another crack after getting smacked like this?

Although in the fans eyes this is quite the enticing fight, as Henderson is looking at retirement afterwards, top contenders in the 185-pound category aren’t too amused. Currently ranked number 13 and having gone 2-2 since his middleweight return, there’s obvious cause for dismay among the rest of the division. Jacare Souza took to Facebook to voice his displeasure, taking a jab at Bisping with the following meme:

Are the UFC looking past the rankings a little too often at the moment? Quite possibly yes, but the fact remains that entertainment and marketability is a huge factor in booking these fights. Perhaps they see in the Dan Henderson fight one that’s more fan pleasing than any other options at present, it could also be influenced by Bisping’s insistence and the fact both men have such a storied history.

Will the tables be turned when Bisping vs. Henderson 2 happens around October time, reportedly at UFC 204, or will ‘Hendo’ defy the odds once again?
