Despite Mounting Losses, Jake Ellenberger Enjoying UFC 201 Fight Week

Jake Ellenberger has seen his stock fall over recent years and knows the pressure to win is growing ahead of UFC 201 Saturday night and his welterweight fight with Matt Brown.

But Ellenberger remains focused on just enjoying the moment as he told MMAjunkie earlier this week.

“Being honest with myself, there’s times where you’re doing it because you have to, not because you want to,” Ellenberger said. “You know, that’s life. I really have been looking forward to training and enjoying it the last four or five months. That’s been a huge momentum boost for me. Especially against a guy like Matt Brown. I couldn’t have got a better fight. He’s a fighter, he moves forward, there’s really no secrets to what he does.

“For me, it’s been a chill week and relaxing. It’s my coming back and wrecking shop weekend.”

Ellenberger (30-11) has gone 9-7 over his 16-fight UFC career, but the 31-year-old is just 1-5 over his last six, including losses to Stephen Thompson, UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler and Kelvin Gastelum via either knockout or submission.

Ian McCall’s Response To UFC 201 Fight Cancellation: “Whatever”

ian-mccall

Ian McCall has not fought since early 2015.

“Uncle Creepy” was expected to return to action Saturday night at UFC 201 vs. Justin Scoggins in the pay-per-view main card opener. However, Scoggins’ body stopped cutting weight Thursday and officials removed the entire fight.

McCall (13-5-1) will still receive his show money after successfully weighing in, according to a report by MMAjunkie.

“Whatever,” McCall said. “As much as I like Justin, I want to be a (expletive) and say something, but whatever. Weight cutting isn’t good for you, and if you don’t do it right – and he’s young, he’s probably stupid about it. But he’s a good fighter, so hopefully this won’t tarnish his name too much.”

A veteran of the sport, McCall understands all of the nuisances that go into the fight game.

“It’s weird that I feel bad for him, but this weight cutting (expletive) is horrible for you,” he said. “I’m just getting it done because I’m getting paid.”

Justin Scoggins is out of his flyweight bout against Ian McCall at UFC 201 due to weight cutting issues. While the UFC has yet to pull McCall from the event, getting an opponent for him on such short notice is not likely.

“We just had to make a horrible, disappointing call,” Chris Scoggins, who is Justin’s dad, told Bloody Elbow. “Justin could not get below 132.5 pounds. He was all good and his body just stopped allowing the weight to come off. No sweating, nothing. That’s too much [of a] weight difference for a catchweight so Justin is out. This is horrible.”
