As noted, CM Punk took part in a media conference call with his opponent Mickey Gall on Thursday to promote their fight on the PPV card at UFC 203 later this month. As it has been since the fight was first announced, both guys were respectful of each other while promoting their upcoming showdown.

Regarding the fact that he might not be as colorful a character during the build-up to his Octagon debut that some fans may have expected, Punk pointed out that those are his fans are already cheering for him and those who weren’t are already rooting against him.

“I don’t see the need for it,” said Punk. “You know? People either love me or hate me already.”

Punk continued, “I’m not trying to talk anybody into the building on this one. I think the allure is just the fact that it’s happening. You know what I mean? And the story writes itself, so it’s not a fabricated thing where I need to, kind of create some drama between me and Mickey.”

As he wrapped up on the topic, he got down to the core of the issue — at the end of the day he’s going to step into the Octagon on September 10th and fight a trained MMA veteran selected by the UFC while his fans and detractors alike tune in live to see it.

“We’re going to fight. That’s the beauty of it,” said Punk. “You know? It doesn’t need to be a weird verbal p*ssing contest. I think some of these guys, while it is entertainment and it’s the sh*t-talk business, I just don’t see it.”

Punk concluded, “I don’t see it happening this time.”

Headlined by Stipe Miocic vs. Alistair Overeem for the UFC Heavyweight Championship in a striking fans dream matchup, which will be Miocic’s first defense of the title, and featuring the Punk-Gall contest, UFC 203 takes place from the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio on Saturday, September 10, 2016.

When former WWE champion CM Punk surprisingly signed with the UFC after having zero professional or amateur MMA fights to his name in December 2014, the circumstances were understandably met with a large amount of criticism from both fighters and fans.

After all, Punk would receive an opportunity that countless longtime fighters had scratched, clawed, bled, and made sacrifices for, only to fall just short and be forced to find new careers after several wars in regional MMA bouts. Obviously Punk brings the recognition of his pro wrestling days, where he was one of the most recognizable names, and he brings an entire fanbase with him.

But fighter pay was and very much is one of the more debated topics in MMA, and when he was signed to fight sight unseen, the venom spewed from seemingly all angles at Punk. Countless haters mounted both online and in the media, and fighters both blasted the move and called to be the first to fight Punk in the Octagon, deeming it a huge easy payday.

One such fighter who blasted Punk’s signing was now-booming lightweight Nate Diaz, who at the time was returning to the Octagon from a yearlong layoff to face eventual champion Rafael dos Anjos in a one-sided loss at UFC on FOX 13 following a battle with the UFC over his contract. Diaz has since gone on infamously throw down with featherweight champion Conor McGregor in a pair of bouts that ended up the biggest two events of the year thus far, but Punk still hasn’t fought yet.

He’s scheduled to take on 2-0 24-year-old welterweight Mickey Gall on the main card of September 10’s UFC 203 pay-per-view from Cleveland, Ohio, and the hate for Punk has not only ramped up again, it may be at an all-time high. However, it’s apparently not going to come from Diaz, as Punk recently detailed a scene to FOX Sports where Diaz actually approached him the weekend of July’s UFC 200 to squash any beef he had with Punk and actually apologize for his talk:

“UFC 200 I was doing an autograph signing and the guy I was signing the autograph for started like pointing behind me and I heard someone like yelling my name and I turned around and I was on a riser and Nate Diaz was on the ground and he was like ‘hey man come here.’ I was like, ‘What’s up?’ and he was the nicest (expletive) guy.

“I don’t know if he’ll get mad and this will ruin the image of Nate Diaz, but he was like, ‘Hey man, I talked some (expletive) before and I don’t know you and I’m sorry,’ and he’s like, ‘Gilbert (Melendez) and Ronda (Rousey) said that you’re a cool dude and they love you’ and I started looking around for the cameras. I was like, ‘all right.’ I thought that was super, super cool of him. Super nice guy.”

Diaz is well-known for his bad boy persona, and, as an outspoken voice for the treatment of fighters, he’s often at the center of many controversial topics surrounding the sport. Due to that fact, it wasn’t surprising to hear him blast Punk when he first came on board with the UFC. It is surprising to hear him seek Punk out to apologize.

Most aren’t giving the former WWE frontman much of a chance to beat Gall in his first-ever MMA bout next week, and that includes the bookmakers, who have rated Gall a significant 3-to-1 favorite. From the sound of things, at least he’ll have Diaz rooting for him when he steps into the Octagon in the UFC’s first event from Cleveland.

Whether he proves his doubters wrong and crosses over into a much different fight sport is up to him.

Alistair Overeem Knocks CM Punk’s UFC Debut: He’s Making A Mistake

Top contender Alistair Overeem has the biggest challenge of his life coming up when he fights newly crowned heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic for the title at UFC 203, but Overeem is also looking at how former WWE star Phil “CM Punk” Brooks will do in his fight with promising star Mickey Gall at the event.

Overeem explained to FOX Sports that he understands why the UFC is booking the likes of Brock Lesnar and Punk and it’s because they will draw. However, Overeem doesn’t see Punk’s fight with Gall going in his favor.

“I totally understand and realize you need to have these ‘show’ fights to kind of boost the sport,” Overeem said when speaking to media in Los Angeles on Monday. “Brock (Lesnar) came from the WWE, I think it was great for the sport, he’s a big guy, I enjoyed watching his fights. So the same for CM Punk. He’s getting a lot of attention, but I think it’s not going to be in his favor. His division, welterweight, that’s a very hard division.

Not only does Overeem think Punk is going to have a difficult time, but he also thinks Punk is making a mistake because he doesn’t know what he is getting himself into MMA; perhaps a good point since Punk has never fought professionally.

“To me, he’s making a mistake. He doesn’t know what he’s getting himself into. He’s talking about ‘I want to test myself’ and this and that — well, he’s going to be tested. Cause two things are going to happen, either he’s going to lose and quit, or he’s going to win, and he’s going to lose later on and quit,” Overeem said. “For him to think he can just do this for fun and test himself to see and I do have to respect that testing himself, I am at the same time hoping for the upset.”

Overeem did admit that he hopes Punk does great in the fight, however:

“Because we all love the upset, I hope he’s going to do great but at the end of the day, we’re going to find out what CM Punk is made of. He’s going to be tested, and I wish him luck,” Overeem said. “Don’t give up at the first hurdle you encounter. His age is working a little bit against him and then your first fight. I don’t know.”

UFC 203 takes place on Saturday, September 10th, at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.
