He already deserved a title shot with nine straight wins, but Max Holloway was still looking for just the interim belt when he met former lightweight champion Anthony “Showtime” Pettis in the main event of last night’s (Sat., December 10, 2016) UFC 206 from the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario.

In what will certainly rate as his finest performance thus far, Holloway was able to wear “Showtime” down with a nonstop pressure game, hitting him with pinpoint body and head shots to pour on the heat enough to earn an emphatic stoppage up against the fence. It was a defining win that earned the 25-year-old Hawaiian the next shot at newly re-crowned official champion Jose Aldo in what should be one of the best 145-pound bouts in UFC history.

Donald Cerrone remained unbeaten at welterweight Saturday night, knocking out Matt Brown in the co-main event of UFC 206.

And as typical “Cerrone” style, he mentioned a desire to fight again in January.

Cerrone talked about possibly taking on Demian Maia in what could be a No. 1 contender match at 170 pounds, but stated he prefers fighting on the Denver card next month regardless of the opponent.

In the main, surging featherweight Max Holloway scored his tenth straight victory over former lightweight champion Anthony Pettis, battering the star with a relentless onslaught of punches to secure the interim featherweight championship and a future date with champion Jose Aldo. In the co-main event, Donald Cerrone knocked out Matt Brown with a massive head kick in the third round of an exciting back-and-forth brawl, and featherweights Cub Swanson and Doo Ho Choi threw down in what could easily go down as Fight of the Year.

The co-main event of UFC 206 featured two of the most exciting and beloved fighters in mixed martial arts (MMA) today. The two competitors were Donald Cerrone (32-7, 1 NC) and Matt Brown (20-16).

Despite being a close and exciting fracas, the judges weren’t needed for this one.

They met each other at the center of the Octagon right away. Cerrone went low with a kick. He went for a takedown, but it was thwarted. A right hand landed for “Cowboy.” He followed it up with a kick to the body. A head kick clipped Brown. Cerrone fired off another leg kick. A right hand landed for “The Immortal.” Cerrone landed a high kick. He threw a few jabs. Swelling former under the right eye of Brown.

A left hook to the body landed for Brown. He went for a high kick, but slipped. He locked in a triangle, but Cerrone got out of it. Brown landed a right hand. Brown clipped his opponent with a right hand as the round came to a close.

The second stanza began and Cerrone moved in for a takedown that was stuffed. A knee to the body landed for Brown. He connected a jab to follow. He dropped Cerrone with a right hand. He moved forward and threw leather. “Cowboy’s” takedown attempt was stuffed. Cerrone dropped Brown, who recovered as well. An inside elbow landed for Brown. “Cowboy” moved forward with strikes. Cerrone went to the body then landed a punch upstairs. An inside elbow landed for Brown. The round ended shortly after.

The two embraced at the beginning of the final round. Brown took Cerrone down, but couldn’t hold him for more than a second. A hard right hand landed for “Cowboy.” A vicious head kick from Cerrone knocked “The Immortal” into next week. Brown was out cold.

Final Result: Donald Cerrone def. Matt Brown via KO (Head Kick) – R3, 0:34

Kennedy went high with a kick early. Gastelum caught the leg and threw leather. Kennedy landed a right hand and drove his opponent against the fence. He took Gastelum down briefly. He remained in control and looked to take the back. Gastelum got back up, but wasn’t free from the clinch and took some knees to his legs. The TUF winner broke free and landed a left hand. Gastelum landed a knee to the body on the break. Kennedy’s right eye began to swell. Gastelum teed off on Kennedy before the round ended.

A kick to the body from Gastelum landed to open the second round. Kennedy’s takedown defense was stuffed and this time it was Gastelum who moved towards the back. Kennedy avoided the bad position and got control of the clinch. Gastelum broke free and fired a combination. A lunging uppercut connected found the chin of Kennedy. Gastelum reversed a position and gained control on the ground before they returned standing. A left hook left Kennedy a little wobbly. A one-two combination for Gastelum ended the round.

The final frame opened with Gastelum running towards his opponent. He fired a barrage of punches and went high with a kick. A hard jab stunned Kennedy. The TUF winner landed a jab. A spinning wheel kick from Kennedy missed. Gastelum landed another lead uppercut and dropped his opponent with a massive punch to end the fight.

Final Result: Kelvin Gastelum def. Tim Kennedy via TKO (Strikes) – R3, 2:45

In our featured UFC 206 UFC Fight Pass preliminary event, up-and-coming lightweight prospect Lando Vannata took on Canada’s own John Makdessi, but unfortunately for the native Canadian it didn’t turn out the way he wanted.

During the first round of the contest Vannata unleashed a massive spinning wheel kick to Makdessi’s chin that sent him crashing to the canvas unconscious, while Vannata walked away for the walk-off KO. The knockout showed shades of the vicious Edson Barboza knockout of Terry Etim back in 2012.
