Daniel Cormier finally has his next light heavyweight defense set.

The 205-champion, who experienced a whirlwind of unfortunate circumstances in three attempts to defend his belt in 2016, will make his return to the Octagon against expected title challenger Anthony “Rumble” Johnson at April 8’s UFC 210 from Buffalo, New York, Cormier announced this evening on UFC Tonight.

The two were originally set for their rematch at UFC 206 in December 2016 before Cormier suffered a groin injury and was forced to withdraw. Cormier defeated Johnson by third-round submission in their first match-up at 2015’s UFC 187 after getting rocked by a huge punch from “Rumble” early on.

Since then, he beat Alexander Gustafsson in a thrilling five-round affair at October 2015’s UFC 192, his first and only title defense. His long-awaited rematch with troubled MMA great Jon Jones was set for April 2016’s UFC 197, but a prior leg injury forced him out. “Bones” went on to beat replacement Ovince St. Preux at the event, and their rematch – which was going on two years in the making – was set for the main event of July 2016’s UFC 200.

But as we all know, that fight fell apart three days before it was scheduled to happen when Jones failed a USADA drug test for a banned substance, something he later attributed to using sexual performance enhancement drug Cialis. “DC” fought Anderson Silva and beat him in a boring, safe display of his wrestling, and headed for a rematch with “Rumble,” who again picked up his surging freight train form with three dominant first-round finishes.

If he can stay healthy, the 37-year-old Cormier’s return is set. Will he defend his gold once again in upstate New York this April?

Former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman has hit some rough times as of late, losing his last two bouts to Luke Rockhold and Yoel Romero, with both coming via T/KO. Despite the recent stretch, the No. 4-ranked Weidman will return to meet No. 5-ranked Gegard Mousasi at UFC 210 in Buffalo, and his confidence is still riding high:

“I want to get that belt back, and fighting the toughest guys in the division is the way to do that,” said Weidman on a recent edition of “The MMA Hour.” “I don’t take that last loss and think, ‘I need to beat some guy who is not on my level to get my confidence back.’ I know exactly what I did wrong in that last fight and what I have to do differently, so I don’t have to fight any of those guys to get my confidence level up. I’m just as confident as I was. I feel like Mousasi is a great fight for me to get back on my winning ways and get closer to fighting for the title again.”

Mousasi is currently riding a four fight win streak with three of those victories coming by way of stoppage, but Weidman feels as if he has faced tougher competition:

“They’re definitely some good guys, but look at my record,” said Weidman, who has competed against the best the division has to offer during his UFC run. “This guy says I am scared of him, look at my record, look at the guys I have fought.”

Either way, this fight could be a tough one for the ex-champion, as Mousasi has arguably never looked better. With that said, however, Weidman is planning to make “The Dreamcatcher” ‘panic’ when the cage door closes:

“What he brings to the table is that he is an experienced guy and he fights like he is experienced,” concluded Weidman. “He stays calm in all situations, but I am going to make him panic when he fights me. I really feel like it’s a great fight. I give him respect, I think he’s a tough guy and I expect a tough fight, but I just think it’s a great fight for me.”

Which 185 pounder do you expect to come out on top in this bout?

Chris Weidman: ‘Gegard Mousasi is a Great Fight For me’ at UFC 210 in Buffalo

Chris Weidman isn’t a believer in tuneup fights. The former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) middleweight title holder lost his first two bouts in the span of 11 months. If all goes as planned, World Series of Fighting bantamweight champion Marlon Moraes could be making his next appearance inside the Octagon.

Ali Abdelaziz, the manager for Moraes, told MMAjunkie on Thursday that his client is interested in a bout at UFC 210 with Jimmie Rivera.

Moraes’ contract with the WSOF expired after his most recent title defense, which came at WSOF 34 vs. Josenaldo Silva.

“I believe Marlon is capable of beating any bantamweight in the world,” Abdelaziz said. “Jimmie needs a fight, and Marlon deserves to fight a top-ranked opponent if he signs with the UFC. This fight just makes sense.”

Moraes is 18-4-1 overall and went a perfect 11-0 with the WSOF. Rivera (20-1) was scheduled to meet Bryan Caraway this past weekend, but Caraway bowed out with an injury.

Gegard Mousasi Once Again Proves That The Squeaky Wheel Gets The Oil In Modern MMA

These days if you’re looking to make the big bucks in MMA you better be a damn good talker. While fighting ability should be the end all be all, the reality is that if you’re looking to get truckloads of money then you’re going to have to market yourself the right way. There’s nothing like a good story line to hang your hat on and it’s exactly what the fans want to see. Ticket sales and pay-per-view purchases can’t simply be sold on the prospect of a good performance. Personalities are what sell these days and if you’re looking to get things done and move the needle in your favor then you better have a good marketing plan set up.

There’s a reason why everyone has been taking the “Conor McGregor” approach these days. What McGregor and Ronda Rousey have done for the sport is revealed the truth behind success in prize fighting. Being a standout, polarizing figure is what’s going to generate interest and in turn produce dough.

Yes, it’s sad that fighters have to resort to being brand these days. Somewhere in the back of our minds we still want to believe in the purity of the sport. But that kind of mindset isn’t going to pay the bills. A fighter can’t feed themselves by simply being honorable and believing in the fighting spirit (unless it’s a character that can be sold that is).

The truth is money talks, literally. If you want something in this game then you’re going to have to take it and the squeaky wheel gets the oil. Just ask Gegard Mousasi.

With the recent announcement of his bout against Chris Weidman at UFC 210, Gegard Mousasi has proven that voicing your opinions and being heard is important to get things done. He had no fights on his plate and nothing to look forward to in his immediate future. That is, until he started calling out all the fighters in the top fifteen in the middleweight division. It seemed that with enough trash talk that things were able to come together and Mousasi got the top five opponent he’s been looking for.

Do I wish prize fighting could be all about the purity of the endeavor? I certainly do. But I also realize that it’s a hard lifestyle to live and in order to make it and build a nest egg for yourself and your family then you have to do what’s necessary to generate income. These days that means creating a persona for yourself and letting everyone know it too.

What’s your thoughts on this new era of MMA?
