Dana White Reacts To Brian Ortega’s Shocking Knockout Of Frankie Edgar

Surging featherweight star Brian Ortega shocked the MMA world when he knocked out Frankie Edgar (highlights here) in the co-main event of last night’s (Sat., March 3, 2018) UFC 222 from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, nailing “The Answer” with a vicious elbow and an absolutely beautiful uppercut to seal the deal.

Becoming the first man to ever finish Edgar, Ortega capitalized on the biggest opportunity of his career after taking the fight on short notice when champ Max Holloway was forced out of the original UFC 222 main event against Edgar. The sheer scope of the exhilarating win left the previously No. 3-ranked jiu-jitsu wiz with no options but a title shot against ‘Blessed.’

After the fight, Dana White discussed Ortega’s knockout on the FOX Sports 1-aired post-fight show with Megan Olivi, noting that he surprised everyone by using his hands rather than his vaunted jiu-jitsu:

Yeah, and to do it with punches. You know, you’d expect Ortega to win, you expect him to do it by submission, but he finishes him with punches. It just sets up an incredible match-up between Ortega and Holloway, so, that’s next.”

White gave praise to the legendary Edgar, adding that he was highly confident wanted to fight again after facing Ortega. A star was born, however, and the UFC’s top man continued the praise of his rising 145-pound talent:

“Well, listen, Frankie Edgar is so tough, man, and he’s been in there with everybody, and I now he was very confident for this fight. He wanted to turn around again right after this fight and fight again. And, uh, you know, you found out tonight that Ortega’s for real. If you didn’t believe it in the Cub Swanson fight, you know it now.”

Earlier tonight (Sat. March 3, 2018) in the UFC 222 co-main event on pay-per-view (PPV) top-ranked 145 pounders Frankie Edgar and Brian Ortega went to war.

Edgar is undefeated at 145 pounds in non-title fights since making the cut down back in 2013. “The Answer” has bested names like Charles Oliveira, Cub Swanson, Urijah Faber, BJ Penn, Chad Mendes, Jeremy Stephens, and many more since moving to featherweight. With a win over Ortega, Edgar would have likely solidified his third shot at 145-pound gold.

Ortega entered his clash with Edgar undefeated, thanks in large part to his ridiculous Brazilian jiu-jitsu repertoire. “T-City” has picked up wins against Diego Brandao, Clay Guida, and Cub Swanson as of late. With a win over a competitor the calibre of Edgar, Ortega could’ve very well earned himself a shot at dethroning “The Blessed One.”

Edgar came out nicely and seemed to have the advantage in the striking department early on. He went for a takedown but stopped after Ortega threatened a guillotine choke, thus he resumed his assault on the feet. Ortega, however, landed a nice elbow that rocked Edgar badly.

He swarmed the former lightweight champ and knocked him down hard with a huge uppercut. After some ground-and-pound the referee waved the action off and Ortega became the first man in MMA history to stop Edgar inside the cage.

Women’s featherweight champion Cristiane ‘Cyborg’ Justino stepped up on short notice to battle Invicta FC bantamweight champ Yana Kunitskaya in the main event of last night’s (Sat., March 3, 2018) UFC 222 from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

It was another day at the office for the most dominant fighter in women’s MMA, but not after some very brief early adversity. At the sound of the bell, Cyborg landed a big right hand but was surprisingly taken down by her opponent:

But Kunitskaya couldn’t keep Cyborg down, and once the Brazilian began to open up in the striking, there was precious little time left for the Invicta FC vet:

Cyborg extended her unprecedented unbeaten streak to an unheard-of 21 fights while simultaneously further etching herself into UFC history now.

What’s next for the most decorated female in the history of MMA?

UFC 222 on pay-per-view (PPV) has come to a close and last night’s (Sat. March 3, 2018) event showcased some amazing mixed martial arts (MMA) competition.

On the FS1 preliminary card young lightweight Alexander Hernandez picked up a shocking win over Beneil Dariush with a vicious first round knockout in just 48 seconds. The UFC newcomer made an emphatic statement in his promotional debut, and was awarded a Performance Of The Night bonus for his finishing of a top-ranked 155-pound contender. He’ll take home a bonus of $50,000 for his efforts.

On the main card bantamweights Sean O’Malley and Andre Soukhamthath put on a great back-and-forth contest in which O’Malley was able to showcase some top-notch striking. Soukhamthath badly injured O’Malley’s leg late in the third round and ground-and-pounded him until the final buzzer.

In the end, however, O’Malley had done enough to get the win on the judges’ scorecards with an injured leg. The two men were awarded Fight Of The Night honors and an extra $50k to take home as well.

Finally, the co-main event of the evening saw jiu-jitsu specialist Brian Ortega become the first man in mixed martial arts (MMA) history to stop Frankie Edgar inside the cage. Ortega, despite having some slick skills on the ground, finished “The Answer” on the feet with a beautiful combination. He will now challenge Max Holloway for the 145-pound crown next. Ortega was awarded a Performance Of The Night Bonus as well, which means an extra $50,000 to take home.
