Valentina Shevchenko has reacted to today’s disappointing situation, and she’s handling it like a true professional. However, she has also expressed her frustration.

Montano was slated to make her first title defense as the UFC women’s flyweight champion against the former women’s bantamweight title contender in the co-main event of tomorrow’s UFC 228. However, this fight got canceled once it was revealed on Friday morning prior to the weigh-ins that the champ was hospitalized for kidney function issues.

As a result, Shevchenko weighed in and was later informed that Montano was unable to fight. Due to such short notice of this incident, the UFC decided to scrap the bout and Shevchenko won’t compete come fight night. Hopefully, the Las Vegas-based promotion will give her the show money that she deserves for making championship weight.

After a few hours after the news had broken, Shevchenko took to her official Instagram account to express her feelings with the following:

“I am not surprised about this situation with Nicco. And I told it before, she can pull out from the fight at anytime. She was trying to avoid this fight several times already. It is my 3rd preparation for this fight. Looks like It was her plan from the beginning, to show up for the fight week , to build up her name, speak confident and secure, and then escape from the fight in the last minutes. She was speaking about Fighting spirit and character.

What kind of fighting spirit she is talking about? I don’t believe in a version about health issues, she was looking totally fine in open work out and media day. Her actions are totally unprofessional!

First of all I am very sorry for all my fans who came to support me! I am very upset about all this happening. I was preparing for this fight hard and serious. My plan was to leave Dallas with the belt. I will keep moving forward. And will seize the next opportunity to take what is mine. Thank you everyone of my dear friends for your support!”

UFC women’s flyweight champion Nicco Montano was hospitalized in a concerning scene surrounding her UFC 228 flyweight title fight with Valentina Shevchenko.

Now, some details have emerged about the champion’s current status. Montano’s training partner Steve Hanna released a statement to MMA Fighting to detail Montano’s ailment. He claims she will be fine in a few days.

However, she’s out of the fight because she simply could not continue cutting weight due to kidney function:

“She will be fine in a few days,” Hanna’s statement read. “The UFC medical team was called in to evaluate her this morning during the process of her weight cut. They determined that she had to cease cutting weight and be transported to and treated at the local hospital for issues regarding her kidney function.”

It’s unknown when Montano will defend her flyweight title. When she does it will be her first title defense after she won the belt at last December’s The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 27 Finale.

Montano fought at bantamweight prior to TUF 27. For what it’s worth she made weight three times in a six-week period on the show.

Earlier today (Fri., September 7, 2018) the UFC was beset with yet another weigh-in day catastrophe when women’s flyweight champion Nicco Montano was forced out of her title fight with Valentina Shevchenko at tomorrow’s UFC 228 from Dallas. The events may suggest it’s already time for the UFC to strip Nicco Montano of her title.

Montano was reportedly rushed to the hospital due to weigh-cutting complications. Obviously, her health comes first and foremost, but it was an odd set of circumstances before a fight that Shevchenko repeatedly stated Montano wouldn’t show up for.

Her bold prediction was proven true this morning, unfortunately. The UFC was left with another cancellation of a high-profile fight on weigh-in day, continuing a concerning streak of last-minute call-offs that make the promotion look quite unprofessional.

And it looks even worse for Montano. After winning the title by defeating Roxanne Modaferri at The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 27 Finale last December, Montano took nearly nine months off to reportedly deal with a host of injuries. When news broke from Ariel Helwani that the UFC was wearing thin on her dragging her feet, she went off on the longtime journalist. That looks beyond entitled in hindsight now, as she waited all that time to simply not show up.

Montano was a historic underdog to former women’s bantamweight title contender Shevchenko, and many are crying that she was scared. Maybe that’s true, maybe it isn’t, but regardless the UFC has a situation unfolding similar to that of former women’s featherweight champion Germaine de Randamie. De Randamie won the belt in controversial fashion over Holly Holm at UFC 208 in early 2017 and then promptly went radio silent when the prospect of her fighting current champion Cris Cyborg arose.

Looking at it on the surface, this is eerily similar.

The women’s flyweight division just got established, but it had little direction with Montano inactive, and now it’s been set back even further due to her latest holdup. That’s just not the direction of a true UFC champion, and especially during a time when this is the last thing the promotion needs.

So is it time to strip Nicco Montano of her title? Yes, it probably is, because there’s a much more accomplished fighter willing to put it on the line in Shevchenko.

And she’s ready to fight.

UFC 228 Headliner Official As Darren Till Makes Weight

After all of the drama leading up to this fight, Till has made championship weight.

The post UFC 228 Headliner Official As Darren Till Makes Weight appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

UFC 228 headliner is official as both Darren Till and UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley made weight for their title fight at this show. Once this fight was made official, there was a ton of talk regarding the weight cut of Till. It also brought up questions about whether he could make weight or not at 170 pounds.

UFC officials held the weigh-ins for UFC 228 on Friday morning where Till made weight at 169 pounds while Woodley came in at 170 pounds. After Till had weighed in, he flipped off the media who were present. You can check out the full results here.

Till’s weight as it has been widely talked about because he missed weight the day before he was supposed to fight former title contender Stephen Thomson. He had to stay below 188 pounds until a few hours before the fight in order for the commission to sanction it. He originally weighed in three pounds heavier than the maximum welterweight limit, which is 171. Till would go onto earn a controversial decision win over Thompson.

Woodley suffered a partial labrum tear early in his last title defense over top contender Demian Maia, which he won by decision. Woodley has been a fighting champion as he has defended it twice in 2017 with winning decisions over Stephen Thompson and Maia. This tied with three other fighters for the most active 2017 schedule by a UFC champion.

The UFC 228 pay-per-view event is set to take place on Saturday, September 8, 2018 in Dallas, Texas at the American Airlines Center.

The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET. The preliminary card will air on FX at 8 p.m. ET and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass, 6 p.m. ET.
