Nicco Montano seems ready to defend her UFC women’s flyweight title, but Valentina Shevchenko wants her to make it official.
Montano hasn’t fought since December when she defeated mixed martial arts (MMA) veteran Roxanne Modafferi in The Ultimate Fighter 26 Finale (TUF 26 Finale) to win the inaugural title. Its now been six months since Montano won the title, and top-ranked flyweight Valentina Shevchenko is waiting for her shot.
Shevchenko is a former 135-pound title challenger who made the jump up in weight this past February. She defeated Priscilla Cachoeira via second round submission to make her featherweight debut.
The Bullet has certainly emerged as the frontrunner to challenge Montano first, but for whatever reason there’s been a ton of holdup.
Montano’s camp had suggested that a slew of injuries and illnesses were keeping the champ out-of-action. In a recent Instagram post Montano suggested she’s healthy and ready to go, hinting at a fight with Shevchenko at UFC 228 in September:
“Alright, let’s get this show on the road! What you got on your girl, Sept 8th in Vegas, Valentina! Now that I’m finally back to a healthy body I’m ready to go, it was only a matter of time. ……share it, write it down, take a picture…”
At first many believed that this was an official fight announcement, but Shevchenko fired back with an Instagram post of her own, suggesting that Montano was speaking prematurely as she still hasn’t signed the fight agreement:
“Hey Nicco, finally! Sign the fight agreement first. You changed your word once already. No trust before I will see the paper from you. See you in octagon ”
The UFC women’s flyweight title may finally be defended for the first time in the coming months.
After winning the 125-pound title with a decision victory over Roxanne Modafferi last December at The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 26 Finale, champion Nicco Montano has yet to defend the title due to various injuries.
Yesterday (June 14, 2018), however, she took to her official Instagram account recently to express her interest in doing so later this year against former two-time bantamweight title challenger Valentina Shevchenko:
Shevchenko has won three of her last four fights with the only loss in that stretch being a split-decision loss to 135-pound titleholder Amanda Nunes last September. She then dropped down in weight and rebounded with a dominant submission victory over Priscilla Cachoeira this past February in Brazil.
UFC 228 will take place on Sept. 8, but a venue has yet to be determined.
According to a report from MMAFighting.com, a bantamweight tilt between Jimmie Rivera and former multi-time flyweight title challenger John Dodson has been agreed upon to take place at UFC 228 on Sept. 8 in a venue that has yet to be determined.
The 28-year-old Rivera was last seen taking on former World Series of Fighting (WSOF) champion Marlon Moraes earlier this month in Utica. The bout, which was assumed to be a title eliminator of sorts, however, didn’t go Rivera’s way, as he was viciously knocked out less than one minute into the first round. Prior to that loss, he had won 20 consecutive fights.
Dodson, on the other hand, has gone 3-2 since making the jump back up to 135 pounds in April 2016. Most recently, he scored a split-decision victory over Pedro Munhoz this past March at UFC 222 and prior to that, he too suffered a defeat to Moraes.
Featherweights Yair Rodriguez and Zabit Magomedsharipov are also set to meet at UFC 228, while women’s flyweight champion Nico Montano has expressed her interest in making the first defense of her 125-pound title against Valentina Shevchenko on the card as well.

After formerly touted featherweight future star Yair Rodriguez was unceremoniously released from the UFC for reportedly refusing to fight Zabit Magomedsharipov and Ricardo Lamas, that situation has apparently been diffused.
News came from ESPN’s Brett Okamoto this afternoon that Rodriguez has verbally agreed to fight Magomedsharipov and the bout will take place at September’s UFC 228 pay-per-view:
BREAKING: The Yair Rodriguez/UFC situation has apparently done a 180. Rodriguez vs. Zabit Magomedsharipov is now verbally agreed to for UFC 228 in September.
The report has yet to be confirmed, and the UFC has not announced the fight as of yet. UFC 228 is expected to take place on September 8 in Las Vegas, Nevada, although details are still being awaited in that regard as well.
