NYSAC sounds off on concerns for Daniel Cormier and Derrick Lewis leading into their headlining fight at the UFC 230 pay-per-view event.

Daniel Cormier & Derrick Lewis Injuries

First up is the UFC heavyweight champion going on record earlier this week by saying that he’s still dealing with the effects of a broken finger that he suffered at UFC 226.

On the flip side, we have the hard-hitting title contender. The Nevada State Athletic Commission originally gave Lewis a 30-day medical suspension. Obviously, it would have not made Lewis eligible to return in time for this UFC 230 fight. However, the NSAC recently updated the document and it now shows Lewis with a 21-day suspension. Thus, he can fight.

NYSAC Sounds Off

“Our medical team may require additional medical checks for any specific fighter when warranted, and they do,” NYSAC spokesperson Lee Park told MMAjunkie.

Park would not comment on DC’s case further as Cormier initially was given a six-month suspension for his injured finger. Although, the UFC heavyweight champion is able to fight before that suspension is up if he can be cleared with a doctor’s note.

Lewis Challenges

The commission has put in for a request on more paperwork for Lewis, who has asked for his UFC 229 suspension to be reduced.

“He challenged his medical suspension in Nevada, an action permitted in pretty much all jurisdictions,” Park wrote. “Nevada then reduced his suspension to three weeks instead of one month. In light of this, NYSAC has asked for all new medical documentation to prove his fitness to be licensed in New York State.”

The Event

The UFC 230 pay-per-view event is set to take place on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan, New York City with the main card airing on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET while the preliminary card will air on FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass.

Joanna Jedrzejczyk Reveals Why She Couldn’t Fight At UFC 230

Former UFC women’s strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk reveals why she couldn’t fight at UFC 230.

Joanna Jedrzejczyk will attempt to make history at UFC 231.

The former UFC women’s strawweight champion will face Valentina Shevchenko for the vacant women’s flyweight title. If she’s victorious, she’ll be the first woman in UFC history to have held two titles in different weight classes. This will be no easy task, however.

She faces “The Bullet,” who has defeated Jedrzejczyk in Muay Thai competition before. Initially, the fight was targeted for UFC 230 in Madison Square Garden. Unfortunately, Jedrzejczyk was unable to be ready in time for the November 3rd card and was forced to decline.

Instead, the UFC had booked Shevchenko against Sijara Eubanks. However, upon Nate Diaz vs. Dustin Poirier getting canceled, and a heavyweight title fight between Daniel Cormier vs. Derrick Lewis being booked, that fight was scrapped. Shevchenko vs. Jedrzejczyk was then announced for UFC 231.

As for why Jedrzejczyk couldn’t make the date for Madison Square Garden, here’s what she told “Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show” (via MMA News):

“I couldn’t do that because it was too soon and I know how tough is Valentina Shevchenko and the other point is there is not an easy way. It’s impossible to step into the Octagon without the proper camp.

“It’s all about the time, so I couldn’t do that because I couldn’t sign the contract. … I believe in myself, I will get this title but I need the time to prepare. That’s the point.

“They told me that they might (give the title shot to Sijara Eubanks), but I didn’t know it was going to happen. I couldn’t believe that, but it happened. Of course I was a little bit confused, I was sad and it was something new for me. But I understand the other side. They had to do this and it happened. It wasn’t fair 100 percent, but they had to do this. It’s a business.”

“DC” Gives Pick For Jon Jones vs. Alexander Gustafsson II

UFC heavyweight and light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier predicts Jon Jones vs. Alexander Gustafsson II for UFC 232.

Daniel Cormier may have his hands full with Derrick Lewis next month (Sat. November 3, 2018), but that doesn’t mean he’s not keeping an eye on the light heavyweight division.

Currently, Cormier holds both the light heavyweight and heavyweight titles for the UFC. He is preparing to defend the heavyweight title against Lewis at UFC 230 in Madison Square Garden. While Cormier handles business in the heavyweight division, the 205-pound class will move forward.

It has been announced that the returning Jon Jones will face Alexander Gustafsson for the light heavyweight title. Once the first punch is thrown in the fight, Cormier will be stripped of the 205-pound title. That fight will take place in Las Vegas at UFC 232 on December 29th.

Speaking on “The MMA Hour” recently, Cormier offered his pick for the fight. Despite his heated rivalry with Jon Jones over the years, Cormier picked “Bones” to emerge victorious (via MMA Mania):

“I think Jones wins the fight. I have never once shied away from the fact that he’s a fantastic fighter. He is a really talented guy. He obviously can go with me, keep up with me, he has obviously put in a lot of hard work, so, he must be a hard worker in that sense,” he said.

“I know that Alex, for as good as he is, too, Alex struggles in the big moments. This is a really, really big moment and he is going to have to fight to his level or above his level to try and win.”

Jones and Gustafsson will rematch their initial meeting from 2013. The two main evented UFC 165 and put on one of the best fights in UFC history. Jones took home a controversial unanimous decision win over Gustafsson to retain his then-light heavyweight title.

The two match-up extremely well stylistically, with Gustafsson being one of few men to be able to match Jones’ amazing size and build. After almost six years since fighting, it will be intriguing to see how the fight plays out.
