Daniel Cormier Doesn’t Want Third Fight With Jon Jones

UFC “Champ Champ” Daniel Cormier doesn’t see the need for a third fight with Jon Jones before retirement.

Daniel Cormier is content ending his career without fighting Jon Jones for a third time.

This past weekend (Sat. November 3, 2018) Cormier headlined UFC 230 from Madison Square Garden opposite Derrick Lewis. “DC” successfully defended his heavyweight title with a second-round submission over “The Black Beast.” Now, Cormier is adamant he has only one fight left before officially retiring from mixed martial arts (MMA) competition. That fight will likely be against Brock Lesnar in early 2019.

However, due to the way things went between him and Jones in his last fight, and the personal rivalry between the pair, many find it hard to believe Cormier walks away without taking one last crack at beating “Bones.” Speaking up on “Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show” today, Cormier doubled down that he doesn’t need a third fight with Jones to retire happily:

“You know, yeah,” Cormier said. “That’s it man, that’s it. I don’t need it anymore. Sometimes you need things and sometimes you don’t. I just don’t understand – I don’t understand the logic of ‘I need anyone’ anymore. I don’t.

“I’ve come to terms with everything. Like I said, Ariel, because he was gone so much, I had to remove myself from the situation so completely, that it almost became not reality. Now I would truly have to retrain my mind to understand that he’s even back in the game.”

Jones will make his Octagon return next month (Sat. December 29, 2018) to headline UFC 232 from Las Vegas. He will rematch Alexander Gustafsson after their initial 205-pound title bout back in 2013.

Cormier is currently the UFC’s heavyweight and light heavyweight champion. However, upon the start of Jones vs. Gustafsson II, Cormier will be stripped of the 205-pound title. The winner of Jones and Gustafsson will be the new light heavyweight champion.

It’s Just Never Easy

The champ champ could conceivably wait and fight Jones a third time. But he isn’t convinced Jones will be able to stay active, because there’s always been some sort of problem. And he’s right:

“And the reality is, can I really trust that he’s truly going to be back in the game? Because history shows that there will probably be some sort of issue. Either before the Gustafsson fight or after the Gustafsson fight. And if not for the Gustafsson fight, we schedule a fight, and there’s definitely going to be an issue! Because there’s always been an issue.”

UFC President Dana White had some words of praise for Israel Adesanya after his impressive win at UFC 230. But he still wants to bring the fighter up slow.

Adesanya did a little bit of everything last night. He demonstrated why so many are high on his ability in the Octagon. For nearly the entire fight it looked as if Derek Brunson didn’t even belong in the same cage as him.

White offered his praise at the UFC 230 post-fight press conference (via MMA Fighting), noting Adesanya put a ‘stamp on his stoppage:

“Israel has been a guy who has been on the rise here for a minute, but I really felt like tonight was his first big test,” White said “His opponent hits like a truck and wrestles really well, and Madison Square Garden, opening the show, man, did he deliver. Many people — including me — think this kid is the future. And he went out and put a stamp on it tonight.”

Future Is Bright

If it wasn’t for Daniel Cormier, who continued making history last night, Adesanya may have been the clear-cut “Fighter of the Year” for 2018. He is unbeaten overall with a record of 15-0. More importantly, ‘The Last Stylebender’ is 4-0 this year in the UFC.

Although he doesn’t plan on fighting again this year, a certain rumored fight has caught his eye. UFC 234 will be in Melbourne, Australia in February. Middleweight champion Robert Whittaker is rumored to be defending his title against Kelvin Gastelum in the main event. Adesanya would like to serve as the standby in case disaster may strike. A “Last Stylebender” plan, if you will.

A title shot is almost certainly in Adesanya’s future, but White would like the young man to slow his roll a bit. He looked back at his first impression of Adesanya and knew he had found a big talent. White said he is the total package but wants him to “pump the brakes”:

“The minute I saw this kid, I was like, holy sh-t this is really good, I like this,” White said. “Then you hear him talk, I like that too. He’s the whole package. He is very ambitious, I would like him to pump the brakes a little bit. This guy wants to f—king fight everybody right now and he wants to fight every month, which I love.

Dana’s Advice

White offered advice to Adesanya to find a spot in between fighting all the time and not enough.

“Listen, you want to become a big star? Keep fighting. If you’re a young guy who’s healthy enough to fight all the time, I absolutely advise it. Do it. What you don’t want to do is put on a great performance and disappear because people forget real quickly. But yeah, I like him very, very much and I don’t want to move him as fast as he wants to be moved, so he and I will get together and find a happy medium.”

Let us know what you think. Is Adesanya being moved along too quickly, or do you think he could challenge for a title his next fight?

Sijara Eubanks Ends Feud With Joe Rogan

Sijara Eubanks’ latest weight miss may cost her a future title shot at flyweight. But she believes if she keeps winning matchmakers can’t deny her forever.

Eubanks had her way with Roxanne Modafferi and earned a decision for her effort. And now the TUF finalist knows Joe Rogan knows her name.

When the UFC first announced that Valentina Shevchenko and Eubanks would fight for the vacant women’s 125-pound title in the main event of UFC 230, many fans and Joe Rogan wondered just who Eubanks was.

This, obviously, didn’t sit too well with the accomplished BJJ practitioner. So after Eubanks defeated Modafferi, and before the cameras were back from a commercial break, Eubanks and Rogan talked it out.

“I did say a little something to Joe Rogan right before we got started (with the post-fight interview).” said after UFC 230 via MMAjunkie.

‘Sarj’ said Rogan apologized for throwing her under the bus. She told him he didn’t have to do that and they became friends. Eubanks said their beef was squashed. Rogan then supposedly offered his own apology.

What Did Rogan Say?

“He came up to me and said, ‘My bad,’” Eubanks recalled. “I was like, ‘Yeah, bro – man. You didn’t have to do that.’ He was like, ‘I didn’t mean no disrespect.’ It was all good, man. It was all love.

“Joe, he calls a lot of fights. I’m going to fight a lot of fights. So, we squashed our beef, per se, but I like Joe. He came up to me, he said something, said he wanted to say something to me in private – said he didn’t mean any disrespect by it. I was like, ‘Well, you know I’ve got to talk a little smack,’ and at the end of it, I told him he does have some crazy fans. I was like ‘Your Twitter following is nuts, boy. They were going to murder me out there.’ I didn’t realize I started a riot, kind of. He kind of laughed about it.”

Now that Rogan is well-acquainted with Eubanks perhaps he could give her some assistance in an effort to help her correct her weight cutting issues. She has now missed weight for two of her four UFC appearances. That’s flat-out, not acceptable at any level of professional sport.

Eubanks, however, is using these as learning experiences. She said that her past miss was actually was a big reason why she didn’t press too hard ahead of UFC 230 and explained that timing – and nature – weren’t on her side this time around.

Heading into UFC 230 Eubanks was hoping an impressive victory would land her a title shot with the soon to be crowned 125-pound champ, either the aforementioned Shevchenko or Joanna J?drzejczyk. But Eubanks understands her most recent weight miss isn’t exactly the best look.

“I know how the game is,” Eubanks said. “When you miss weight, it bumps down that ‘deserve,’ whether or not you’re next in line factor. So, we’ll see.”

As far as competing in the worlds most famous venue, “Sarj” was loving every minute of it, even the boo-birds.

MSG

“Why not?” Eubanks asked. “I’m having a blast. I just fought at Madison Square Garden. I had a tough fight. It was a wonderful fight against a wonderful opponent. My family got to come out. I had a lot of family who’s never been able to watch me fight at all because of the travel.

“I had a blast. A couple of people booed me, but a lot of people cheered me, too. At the end of the day, a lot more people know me than they did about three weeks ago, so I’m happy about it. I’m having fun.”

The ironic thing is that by Joe Rogan saying he doesn’t know who Eubanks is, she actually gained more fans because of that.

“Thanks to Joe, a lot of people know who I am now,” Eubanks joked. “Thanks to me missing by a pound, a lot of people know who I am now. It is what it is.

“What’s most important to me is my close-knit circle. My coaches love me, my family loves me. My daughter loves me. All of that stuff is really important to me, and I’ve been blessed by God today, so we had a good time.”
