The stage is set for the main event of UFC 235.

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones will defend his title against Anthony Smith. The pay-per-view (PPV) goes down from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on March 2, 2019. For weeks, it has been expected that Jones would face “Lionheart” in Vegas. However, the fight couldn’t be made official until Jones was licensed by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC).

Earlier today (Tues. January 29, 2019) the NSAC granted Jones a conditional one-fight license. Now that those matters have been put to bed, the UFC has made Jones vs. Smith at UFC 235 official. They Tweeted out the following shortly after Jones’ hearing this afternoon:

“OFFICIAL! @JonnyBones defends the LHW title against @LionheartASmith in the MAIN EVENT of #UFC235!”

Jones hasn’t fought since December when he reclaimed the light heavyweight title. “Bones” defeated Alexander Gustafsson via third-round TKO in the main event of UFC 232. With the victory, he won the vacant 205-pound title. Now he’ll get to make his first title defense in several years against Smith.

His last title defense took place in January of 2015. Jones defeated Daniel Cormier in the main event of UFC 182 via unanimous decision.

Picograms or not, Anthony “Lionheart” Smith isn’t concerned with what’s in Jon Jones’ system when they fight.

Recently, some more controversy has arisen regarding the UFC light heavyweight champion’s UFC 232 drug test. Jones defeated Alexander Gustafsson at the event to capture the vacant 205-pound championship. However, from a Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency (VADA) test provided by Jones, “Bones” had 33 picograms of 4-chloro-18-nor-17?-hydroxymethyl,17?-methyl-5?-androst-13-en-3?-ol (M3) (or DHMCT) in his system.

However, it’s the same long-term oral Turinabol metabolite that has plagued Jones’ career for the past several months. Jones will not be facing disciplinary action for the test result. Jones’ next expected opponent, Anthony Smith, took to Twitter to react to the news. He seems unconcerned with the situation:

“If you’re hitting me up about this, don’t. I truly dont care. Picograms, no picograms, Olympic sized swimming pools, grains of salt… I couldn’t care any less. I signed on the line and did it knowing what I was signing up for and with no expectations. I’m good, y’all.”

Jones and Smith are expected to face off at UFC 235 on pay-per-view (PPV) from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on March 2nd. Smith earned his title opportunity with a three-fight win streak. He has defeated the likes of Rashad Evans, Mauricio Rua, and Volkan Oezdemir. Now, he’ll get the chance to dethrone Jones, and become the first man to legitimately beat him in mixed martial arts (MMA) competition.

Anthony Smith Doesn’t Care If Jon Jones Is Clean Or Not For UFC 235

Anthony Smith doesn’t care that Jon Jones passed all of his post-fight drug tests following his victory over Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 232. Anthony Smith doesn’t care that Jon Jones passed all of his post-fight drug tests following his victory over Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 232.

That’s because, according to Smith, being a clean fighter nowadays has a much different narrative than it did as recently as six months ago.

“I don’t know, I think that the definition of a clean fighter has become mighty grey in the last six months. And it didn’t use to be like that, it was pretty black and white,” said Smith during a recent appearance on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show.

“If you had a banned substance in your body you were dirty and you were cheating. But for whatever reason, that’s not the narrative everyone is going by anymore,” he added, proceeding to say that at the end of the day he doesn’t care if “Bones” is clean or not.

“Honestly, I don’t care. At this point, I got what I have been working for my entire career and it’s going to take more than Jon Jones’ pee to change my mind. I’m in there, I’m going. It wouldn’t matter what you told me,” said Smith. “Right now there is nothing that would stop me from fighting Jon Jones. If you told me he was fighting with a shiv in his jock strap, I’m still going in.”

Jones still needs to meet with the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) on Tues. Jan. 29, 2019, to explain the ‘atypical’ finding of Turinabol that turned up in his urine over a year after failing an initial drug test at UFC 214.
