UFC 241 had added an intriguing lightweight bout between John Makdessi and Devonte Smith. The news of the matchup was first reported by Amy Kaplan.
Makdessi is riding a three-fight winning streak with wins over Jesus Pinedo back in March, Ross Pearson, and Abel Trujillo. He is currently 17-6 as a pro and trains out of Roufusport in Milwaukee. The Canadian has been in the UFC since 2010 and has compiled a record of 10-6 inside the Octagon.
The 34-year-old will make his second walk to the Octagon of 2019 at UFC 241. Makdessi has told me before he likes to be active, like three to four times a year, so he should be able to get another fight in after August barring he is healthy.
Smith, meanwhile, is 10-1 as a pro and 2-0 in the UFC. The 25-year-old made his way into the UFC after knocking out Joseph Lowry in the first round in the Contender Series. In his UFC debut, he knocked out Julian Erosa in just 46 seconds and then knocked out Dong Hyun Ma at UFC 234 in the first round. Out of his 10 wins, nine have come by TKO/KO while one was by submission. The Factory X product has yet to go to the distance in his MMA career.

UFC heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier believes he can cement himself as the greatest heavyweight of all time with another win over Stipe Miocic.
Cormier defends his title against Miocic in a rematch in the main event of UFC 241 which takes place August 17 in Anaheim, California. “DC” was originally hoping to face Brock Lesnar in what would have been a lucrative payday. However, it never came to fruition.
Still, there is plenty to be gained with a win over Miocic, even if Cormier acknowledges that it will be hard to top his knockout of the former champion last year.
The 40-year-old recently won the ESPY for best MMA fighter, and given that he is still unbeaten at heavyweight, he feels he can be regarded as the greatest ever in the division with a win over Miocic, who is considered the greatest heavyweight champion of all time:
“I can’t do this better than the first time,” Cormier told ESPN. “I’m not going to knock out Stipe Miocic in four minutes. He’s got a great coach, he’s a good fighter who is going to make adjustments to not get put to sleep. But that does not mean he’s going to win the fight. I’m going to win the fight. I get to go out there and defeat the guy that people thought was the best of all time again.
“So when you start to change the mentality, the approach, what the goals are, it starts to make sense. The more I do in this division, the more it cements a legacy in this division. Because after this, beating the guy that was supposed to be the greatest of all time twice, and never losing in this division ever — they got to start putting me in those leaderboards of the greatest heavyweight of all time. As I think I’m in the conversation already for greatest fighter of all time, I don’t know how it gets mixed up in terms of why am I not the greatest heavyweight.“
It’s hard to argue with Cormier — do you believe he’s the greatest heavyweight of all time? Or does he need a second win over Miocic to cement it?

The two 185-pounders meet at UFC 241 on August 17 in what promises to be a barnburner of a contest. Given the physiques of both fighters, allegations have come both their ways of using performance enhancing drugs.
Both have, in fact, tested positive and were suspended for banned substances, but not in the way that you’d think. Romero ingested a tainted supplement and would later successfully sue the supplement company. As for Costa, he was suspended as well, but for receiving prohibited IV infusions for stomach medication.
Regardless, certain sections of fans still assume they’re on steroids, more so with Costa. The Brazilian doesn’t seem to care much, though, as he recently posted an image of his arms on Instagram:
Perhaps it really is just a case of superior genetics.

In the main event of the night, UFC heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier defends his title against Stipe Miocic. This will be a rematch from their initial bout last year, in which Cormier knocked Miocic out in the first round to capture the heavyweight title. “DC” believes the result will ultimately be the same when they run it back.
Also, in the co-main event, former UFC lightweight champion Anthony “Showtime” Pettis welcomes Nate Diaz back to the Octagon. Diaz hasn’t fought since 2016 when he fought to a Majority Decision loss against Conor McGregor.
And of course, two middleweight powerhouses collide, when Yoel Romero meets Paulo Costa as well. UFC 241 goes down on PPV from the Honda Center in Anaheim, California on August 17.
