Joe Rogan: Time Off Will Benefit Stipe Miocic Against Daniel Cormier

While ring rust is a concern for many MMA fighters, UFC commentator Joe Rogan believes Stipe Miocic’s long layoff could benefit him. While ring rust is a concern for many MMA fighters, UFC commentator Joe Rogan believes Stipe Miocic’s long layoff could benefit him.

Miocic will be making his return to the Octagon after over a year when he rematches heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier in the main event of UFC 241 on August 17. The Cleveland native lost his title after getting knocked by Cormier at UFC 226 last July.

Rather than staying active, Miocic notably chose to call out “DC” repeatedly. In the end, it paid off as he now gets his shot at not only regaining his title back, but getting some revenge as well, as things have become slightly personal between the two.

And Rogan believes Miocic has had more than enough time to stew on his mistakes in the first fight and won’t find ring rust to be an issue.

“DC connected with that beautiful punch in the clinch, but Stipe has had over a year to stew on that. It’s been driving him f*cking crazy.” Rogan said on his podcast. “I think it’s [the time off] good for Stipe. Stipe’s an animal, I’m not worried about that. I think he’s going to be better.

“Stipe’s a real veteran. He’s a humble dude. He’s a hard a*s, he’s not going to come in there with a lot of expectations on himself. He’s just going to do his best. If Donald Cerrone was taking a year plus off and then was going to fight for a title, I’d be like ‘woo, I’d like Donald to get a fight in.’”

Do you think Miocic made the right call to fight Cormier after more than a year’s layoff?

Nate Diaz’s return to the Octagon is clearly a big deal as the UFC recently released a promo hyping it up.

Diaz is set to collide with Anthony Pettis in the co-main event of UFC 241 which takes place August 17 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

It will be a welterweight contest and will notably be nearly three years to the day when Diaz last competed. That was against Conor McGregor in their epic UFC 202 rematch in 2016.

Since then, the Stockton native has claimed he would only fight if it was a trilogy with McGregor, or if he was offered a lucrative fight. The UFC seemed to comply as Diaz was originally set to return at UFC 230 last November in a lightweight contest against Dustin Poirier.

However, with Poirier later having to pull out through injury, fans had to wait longer to see the former title challenger return to action.

Hopefully, they get to see it now as both Diaz and Pettis also seem to have beef with each other. And in case, you’ve forgotten how entertaining Diaz can be, you can watch the UFC’s promo for his return below:

UFC 241 will be headlined by a heavyweight title fight between Daniel Cormier and former champion Stipe Miocic.

Nate Diaz is finally set to return to the Octagon.

The Stockton native hasn’t fought since his 2016 rematch with Conor McGregor. After several failed attempts to lure the fan-favorite back to the Octagon, it looks like Diaz might actually make the walk after three years away. He’ll be facing former 155-pound champion Anthony “Showtime” Pettis at welterweight.

All the action goes down at UFC 241 on pay-per-view (PPV) from the Honda Center in Anaheim, California on August 17. Speaking to Luke Thomas on “The MMA Hour” recently, Pettis’ coach, Duke Roufus, broke down “Showtime’s” key to victory over Diaz.

Roufus wants Pettis to take a similar approach to the last man who finished Diaz in the UFC, Josh Thomson (via MMA Fighting):

“I think it’s great for both guys,” Roufus said. “I’m being a little goofy with my metaphors, et cetera, but Nate Diaz is a beast, and he’s going to be a beast at 170.

“But I’ve found Anthony is really strong [at 170]. One thing I know from being a coach in this sport, I see these guys have incredible performances in the gym at their normal weight, and that’s what I’m trying to get a lot of my guys to dial into, being at the weight that they perform the best at in the gym.

“So that being said, it’s going to be a great fight. Stylistically, Nate is an incredible boxer, tough as nails, resilient, got the heart of a champion and incredible jiu-jitsu. I just think Anthony brings more tools to the fight.

“Ironically, a lot of people don’t realize, one of my longtime students … was the coach of Josh Thomson, who helped manufacture that win over Nate Diaz. So that goes back to old-school Roufus gameplan.”

Diving in a bit further, Roufus believes that playing the “up-down game” with kicks could lead to a knockout victory for Pettis as well:

“The up-down game,” Roufus said. “Getting him worried about the low kicks then going high, going to the body, et cetera. The thing is, kicking defense is one of those things you just don’t pick up in a training camp, and that’s what we just saw this weekend — two fights that were strongly effected by the low kick.

“Anderson Silva, and then as well, another fight was Michael ‘Venom’ Page got off-balance with a low kick and then knocked out by (Douglas) Lima. That’s why I was so confident coming into the ‘Wonderboy’ fight. You don’t always see the effects right away of the low kick, but they throw incredible fighters’ timing off.

“People who have the ability to kick all targets are very hard to beat, and that’s something that Anthony has embraced recently, especially when we don’t fight wrestlers, it’s a lot easier to kick more. It becomes truly a kickboxing fight.”

Tyron Woodley Targeting August Return At UFC 241

Former welterweight champion Tyron Woodley is looking to return on the UFC 241 card which takes place August 17 in Anaheim, California.

Woodley was originally scheduled to face Robbie Lawler at UFC Minneapolis in June. However, “The Chosen One” had to withdraw last week due to a hand injury.

While he didn’t get the instant rematch with current champion Kamaru Usman like he wanted, Woodley is still hoping to make use of an opportunity to earn his title back once he’s healthy.

UFC 241 would be ideal, but he doesn’t expect to require more than one win to get a rematch with Usman either.

“I’m targeting maybe the August 17 card [UFC 241] in Anaheim,” Woodley told TMZ. “I just want my belt back. There has to be a path for me to be fighting somebody and fighting Kamaru. I feel I should have gotten the instant rematch, we saw that it didn’t happen. What am I going to do, cry over spilled milk? No, I put myself in position to have another opportunity to perform. Fighters, fight fans and the UFC, they remember performances so I’m just looking for the right fight.

“I’m not going to take two, three fights in between. No, I shouldn’t have to do that — I’m one of the greatest, if not the greatest welterweight of all time and I don’t have to go back to prove myself again.”

There’s A Catch

The only way Woodley can fight again is if the state he competes in allows him to have a cortisone shot.

Woodley complained of his hand feeling weird which is why he had to withdraw from the Lawler fight. He added that he went to a hand specialist recently who diagnosed him with chronic arthritis on his right thumb.

If the Missouri native wants to fight in August, the temporary fix is to have a cortisone shot 10 days before his fight.

“He said the temporary fix is to rehab it, get it stronger, get the flexibility that we can actually start to grab and grip,” Woodley explained. “And then 10 days before the fight, try and get a cortisone shot.

“So I have the UFC checking on dates and cities and states that actually accept and allow you to have cortisone shots. They’re looking. Like if I fight in California or Las Vegas – different states have different commissions [and rules].”

UFC 241 is headlined by a heavyweight title fight between Daniel Cormier and Stipe Miocic. With Nate Diaz returning on the card as well, the potential addition of Woodley against a top welterweight contender will only strengthen what looks to be a stacked card so far.
