On September 7, Dustin Poirier will attempt to do what no other man has been able to.

“The Diamond” will step into the Octagon with Khabib Nurmagomedov in the UFC 242 pay-per-view (PPV) main event. Khabib is currently undefeated in his mixed martial arts (MMA) career with a record of 27-0. He has proven to possess some of the most dominant grappling ability MMA has ever seen.

Now, the lightweight champion will unify his title with interim champion Poirier, who tells MMA Junkie that he knows he’s going to finish “The Eagle.” Whether it’s by knockout or submission, Poirier will get his hand raised after a stoppage win.

“I keep going back and forth,” Poirier said. “I feel like I can submit Khabib, but feel like I’m going to stop him. I don’t know how it’s going to happen, but I’m either going to knock him out or I’m going to submit him. I’m going to finish Khabib Nurmagomedov.”

Don’t mistake Poirier’s confidence for cockiness. “The Diamond” realizes how much of a threat Nurmagomedov is, especially on the ground. If Poirier allows Nurmagomedov to get on top of him, he knows he’s in for a rough night.

“Of course, it’s a huge danger,” Poirier said. “I don’t want this guy to get on top of me and start pulling away with rounds. We only have five of them. If you let a guy lay on you for three, you need a finish. That’s not what I’m trying to do in there.”

“I’m not worried about his takedowns so much. I need to hurt this guy. That’s a huge part of this training camp. Putting myself in good positions to win the rounds and win the fight. Staying off the fence. Getting up off the ground. But, at the same time, I need to do what I do.”

Poirier has an opportunity to make history next month. To defeat an undefeated champion in enemy territory from Abu Dhabi. At the end of the day, that’s what it’s all about for the American Top Team (ATT) product.

“I have the opportunity to make history and do something that’s never been done,” Poirier said. “I’m embracing that … I’m just excited that I put myself in this position and that I have an opportunity to show the world how great I am on the biggest scale possible and unify these belts. Make history – that’s what this is about.”

Four fighters have pulled out of two of the UFC’s upcoming events in China and Abu Dhabi.

The UFC travels to Shenzhen, China on August 31 which is a week before it heads out to Abu Dhabi for UFC 242 on September 7. However, both events have taken a hit with two fighters withdrawing each.

The most prominent name is featherweight Mike Grundy who had to pull out due to injury according to MMA Junkie. He was originally slated to face former M-1 Challenge champ Movsar Evloev at UFC Shenzhen.

Also withdrawing is newly-signed light heavyweight Jamahal Hill due to travel issues. The Dana White’s Contender Series alumni was due to face Da Un Jung on the main card.

As for UFC 242, middleweight Adam Yandiev is out of his fight with Puna Soriano as he suffered a knee injury that requires surgery. Yandiev confirmed the news on Instagram. Lightweight Magomed Mustafaev is also pulling out of his fight with Don Madge though the reasons are unclear as of now.

As per MMA Junkie, replacements are being sought for Grundy, Hill and Mustafaev. It is unknown if one is being sought for Yandiev.

What do you make of these withdrawals?

Paul Felder Claims He Urinated Blood After Groin Shot From Edson Barboza

Paul Felder and Edson Barboza are set to run things back in a lightweight clash in the co-main event of UFC 242 on September 7.

They first met in July 2015 where Barboza came away with a unanimous decision victory. In the process, he dealt the first loss of Felder’s professional career. But over four years on, “The Irish Dragon” is excited to get that one back:

“I know and respect how good Edson is and I think that’s bringing the best out of me in this training camp,” Felder told MMA Fighting’s Eurobash podcast. “I fought him and he beat me, the first loss of my professional career.

I’m very excited and hungry to get it back… and nervous, but good nerves, it’s a very exciting fight for me and it excited me the first time.”

Felder Recalls Accidental Groin Kick

Barboza is known for his deadly kicking game. And while Felder was able to avoid getting knocked out by one of the Brazilian’s many signature kicks, he did suffer one to the groin that left him sick. So much so that he even urinated blood afterwards:

“I’m not going to blame that on why I lost,” he recalled. “You could, I guess, if you wanted to find a way out, but it didn’t help things, that’s for sure. I feel like I had pretty good momentum in that round and then I took that shot and I didn’t take a lot of time to recover, because that’s how it is when we’re in there.

“You’re under a lot of pressure in there; there’s the crowd and there’s the ref talking to you the whole time and your opponent is just standing on the other side of the Octagon. There are a lot of things pushing you to just continue the match. I did that and I’m sure it negatively affected me for sure. That had me sick to my stomach for a while there, I was peeing blood after the fight.”

Felder is coming off a win over James Vick. Meanwhile, Barboza will be looking to get back on the win column after getting knocked out by Justin Gaethje earlier this year.

Who do you think wins the UFC 242 co-main event?
