Lightweight contender Paul Felder plans on making championship weight when he takes on Edson Barboza at UFC 242.

The pay-per-view event takes place in Abu Dhabi on September 7 and will be headlined by a lightweight title unification fight between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Dustin Poirier. Felder, meanwhile, takes on Barboza in a rematch in the co-main event of the evening.

While he is free to weigh in at 156 pounds, “The Irish Dragon” will be making sure to lose that extra pound, just in case he is required to fill in for anyone in the main event.

“A co-main event with Khabib and Poirier headlining? The answer is yes,” Felder told MMA Junkie Radio. “Oh yeah, I’ll be making 155 pounds for weigh-ins. Of course.”

Of course, at UFC 223 back in April last year, Tony Ferguson had to pull out a week before his lightweight title fight with Nurmagomedov. Max Holloway stepped in but was deemed medically unfit to make the weight. A scramble ensued afterwards with a number of names vying to replace him on the day of the weigh-ins.

Felder had notably made 155 pounds that night, but the NYSAC denied him since he was unranked at the time. Felder’s opponent in Al Iaquinta, instead, got the nod. However, Iaquinta weighed in at 155.2 pounds, so even if he won, he wasn’t eligible to win the title.

Felder doesn’t plan on that happening, at least. This time, he is ranked in the lightweight division’s top 15 as well.

Do you think Felder will be called to step in should anyone pull out of the UFC 242 main event?

UFC light heavyweight prospect Johnny Walker is close to finalizing his next fight.

The Brazilian has enjoyed a meteoric rise since debuting for the promotion last year. This is in part due to a run of knockout wins that have seen him become touted as the biggest threat to current champion Jon Jones.

However, Walker has been on the sidelines since his last fight back in March due to his wacky post-fight celebration that saw him injure his shoulder. He later underwent surgery and four months on, is now ready to compete again. Much has been made about who he will face next, but Walker has an opponent and location in mind:

“I would like to fight on UFC Abu Dhabi,” Walker told reporters recently. “I will know Monday after the UFC. Monday, I’ll know where I’ll be fighting (and) against who. Maybe Corey Anderson in UFC Abu Dhabi, but it’s not 100 percent.”

Nothing is confirmed yet, but one can imagine a win over a highly-ranked opponent in Anderson would put Walker right into title contention.

As for his celebrations? The 27-year-old plans on ignoring UFC president Dana White’s pleas and continuing doing “The Worm” again:

“I don’t need to change my celebration,” Walker added. “The doctor fixed my shoulder. Now I can celebrate it properly. (Dana) told (me to stop), but I won’t hurt myself again. No worries.”

Do you want to see Walker take on Anderson? Or do you prefer him facing someone else?

Tony Ferguson will be paying close attention to UFC 242. There, in the main event, lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov, will look to defend his title against the interim champion, Dustin Poirier.

It will no doubt be an interesting fight given the stakes, but also because of how good Poirier has looked as of late. The interim champ is on a four-fight winning streak and a six-fight unbeaten streak (No Contest with Eddie Alvarez in 2017).

During this run, he has beaten all former or current champions in major promotions, with wins over Alvarez, Anthony Pettis, Justin Gaethje, and Max Holloway. Yet, Ferguson believes his skills won’t be enough to beat Nurmagomedov:

“I see Khabib winning,” Ferguson told Helen Yee of Eyes on the Game. “I mean, Poirier’s got some very strong boxing. His forward pressure, I think Khabib is going to be able to slip and throw. I just think Poirier fights off the ropes. I think I’ve said that a couple times.

“And unless he does that real fast, it’s a bad habit to have, and you get punch drunk from that, and you get dropped. And with Khabib, he gets you on the ground, it’s game over.”

Should that happen, it seems likely that the Tony Ferguson vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov fight will finally happen. It has been a fight fans have been clamoring for, for quite some time. Whether or not Ferguson is right is to be seen. But, the oddsmakers agree with “El Cucuy,” as Khabib is the betting favorite.

UFC 242 goes down live on pay-per-view (PPV) from the du Arena in Abu Dhabi on September 7.

Do you think Poirier will be able to get the job done against “The Eagle” in Abu Dhabi?
