With the UFC 242 event quickly approaching, the promotion decided to hold a press conference on Wednesday (June 12, 2019) at the Hotel Cafe Royal at 10 a.m. ET.

Khabib Nurmagomedov returns when he makes his next UFC lightweight title defense against Dustin Poirier at the UFC 242 pay-per-view (PPV) event. This show takes place on Saturday, September 7 at The Arena in Yas Island, Abu Dhabi. The main card will air on PPV at 10 p.m. ET. The preliminary card will air on ESPN at 8 p.m. ET, and the ESPN’s streaming service, ESPN+.

UFC 242 Press Conference Time

Although the fight is still three months away, the Las Vegas-based promotion wants the UFC lightweight and interim champion to start hyping their fight. This is exactly what they’ll do at the press conference.

A heavyweight bout between Curtis Blaydes and Shamil Abdurakhimov has been finalized for UFC 242 which takes place September 7 in Abu Dhabi.

It was reported earlier this month by Farah Hannoun that the two heavyweights were close to finalizing their bout. According to Abdurakhimov, he had signed his part of the agreement and was waiting on Blaydes. Just over a week since, it is now made official.

Blaydes bounced back from a second defeat to Francis Ngannou late last year by comfortably outpointing Justin Willis. He will now look to make it two wins in a row and continue to stake a claim for a title shot.

As for Abdurakhimov, he has been on a recent tear. Following his knockout loss to Derrick Lewis in 2016, the Russian has won three in a row. His recent wins include knockouts of Chase Sherman and Marcin Tybura, as well as a decision win over former champion Andrei Arlovski.

The announcement comes after the main event of UFC 242 was recently made official as Khabib Nurmagomedov and Dustin Poirier will collide in a lightweight title unification clash.

A press conference featuring lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and interim champion Dustin Poirier has been announced by the UFC.

It was recently confirmed that the pair would collide in a lightweight title unification fight which will headline the promotion’s return to Abu Dhabi at UFC 242. The event takes place at The Arena, Yas Island, on September 7.

The two fighters will now meet for the first time on June 12 in London. Like Nurmagomedov’s first press conference for his Conor McGregor fight, this one will also be a media-only event.

Unlike the first press conference with McGregor, though, there is not expected to be much trash talk. However, it will be interesting to see how the two interact with each other.

Nurmagomedov will be returning to action for the first time in 11 months following his fourth-round submission win over McGregor at UFC 229 last October. As for Poirier, he defeated featherweight champion Max Holloway for the interim lightweight title at UFC 236 in April to earn his shot at Nurmagomedov.

The winner of the bout should ideally face Tony Ferguson next following his win over Donald Cerrone at UFC 238. However, nothing seems to be assured when it comes to the lightweight division.
