In what is fitting timing, the Kansas Athletic Commission (KAC) will be experimenting with real-time open scoring in mixed martial arts (MMA) fights.

As per ESPN, the KAC will offer that option to MMA promoters starting March 1 which would see fighters, their corners, the broadcast team and fans know the scores of the judges after each round. Currently, the system in place is such that the scores are only revealed after the fight is completed.

Invicta FC will be the first MMA promotion to make use of it for its March 6 card in Kansas City. However, the use of real-time open scoring is flexible. For example, it can be used for only certain fights, all fights or doesn’t have to be used at all.

“If we can help in some way to push the sport forward in a positive direction, that’s what we’re about — we’ll try,” Invicta promoter Shannon Knapp told ESPN.

The move comes following the recent judging controversies at UFC 247 this past weekend in Houston, Texas. Dominick Reyes, who competed in the main event and believed he won the fight convincingly only to lose via unanimous decision, recently told Ariel Helwani that he would be open to a real-time scoring system.

“In all honesty, I would,” Reyes said. “Yeah. Just yes.”

Many others have also called for an overhaul to the current system such as former featherweight champion Max Holloway who welcomed the KAC’s new initiative.

“I come from outside of the combat sports world,” Kansas boxing commissioner Adam Roorbach said. “But I’ve been a sports fan my whole life. It always mystifies me why the fighters and fans don’t know what the score is until the end. No one has ever given me a good explanation as to why.”

Of course, most UFC events don’t take place in Kansas, but rather Las Vegas, Nevada. Nevada State Athletic Commission executive director Bob Bennett told ESPN he wasn’t open to the idea as it could affect fighter performance.

“I can assure you that the Nevada State Athletic Commission is flexible, adaptable and open to new ideas,” Bennett said. “But this is not something that you just change overnight. This is something you sit down and methodically and logically talk about. Does this idea have in mind the health and safety of fighters and best interests of the sport?”

Maybe if open scoring is received well in Kansas MMA events, it could be something we potentially see being used throughout the sport.

Dominick Reyes revealed what shocked him about fighting UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones this past weekend.

Reyes took Jones to his limit as they fought the full 25 minutes in the UFC 247 headliner on Saturday night. Many thought “The Devastator” did enough to win the fight, especially after his performance in the first three rounds where he connected on Jones several times.

However, “Bones” was able to snatch the win via unanimous decision after a strong second half of the fight to retain his title. But regardless of whether one thinks the result was wrong or a robbery, Jones certainly displayed the heart of a champion and Reyes did offer notable praise for his ability to take a shot:

“Well, first of all, shoutout to Jon,” Reyes said on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show on Monday. “His chin was amazing in this fight. He really doesn’t get enough credit for his chin.

“I was hitting him with some bombs and he knows it, we know it. So shoutout to Jon for his chin.”

Reyes went on to add that he felt he had Jones on the ropes several times during the fight. But what really impressed him was the toughness of the champion:

“The biggest thing that surprised me was his toughness,” Reyes added. “Incredible toughness. I was ripping the body and he was just, he had quite the poker face, man. That shocked me.”

Despite his praise, Reyes still feels he won and believes deep down, Jones knows he won as well.

“As a fighter, you know how the rounds go,” Reyes explained. “You know exactly what happens. He knows I won. Deep down in his heart, he knows I won.

“And him being Jon Jones, a great martial artist himself, I feel like he would want a rematch for his own mind knowing that I won that fight.”

Maybe a rematch is what we end up seeing next.

The main takeaway from UFC 247 in Houston, Texas, this past weekend was the amount of judging blunders.

There were four notable instances that caused controversy: the scorecards in the Andre Ewell vs. Jonathan Martinez bout; one scorecard in the Trevin Giles vs. James Kraus fight; one judge who allegedly wasn’t paying attention during the Andrea Lee vs. Lauren Murphy bout; and the scorecard giving Jon Jones four rounds over Dominick Reyes in the main event.

There have been copious debates since about a judging overhaul with some calling for open scoring while others feel more judges are required. Another suggestion was employing more judges with a combat or mixed martial arts (MMA) background.

When it comes to the Texas Department of Licensure and Regulation (TDLR), which oversees MMA events in the Lone Star State, all they could do was applaud the passion of the MMA world following the events of UFC 247:

“As in all athletic events, athletes, teams, judges, fans and media representatives can – and often do – have differing opinions about what happened in a combative sports match,” commission spokesperson Tela Mange said. “TDLR applauds the passion everyone is exhibiting about this sport. Comments have been made about the selection of the judges and the referees. In selecting ringside officials, TDLR takes into consideration recommendations made by UFC.

“As with all events, TDLR works closely with UFC and other promoters to ensure the quality and experience of referees and judges to protect the health and safety of the fighters.”

They did, however, have a response to UFC commentator Joe Rogan’s claim that one judge wasn’t paying attention during the Lee vs. Murphy prelim bout:

“Claims have been made that a judge was not paying attention to the fight and was looking down at the floor,” Mange added. “One of the advances that UFC has made in the past several years has been to provide small video monitors below the floor level of the octagon for each judge to more closely monitor matches.”
