The upcoming UFC 251 show set to take place in Perth, Australia has been postponed due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

UFC 251 was reportedly set to be headlined by featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski who was in negotiations to face former 145lb king Max Holloway in a highly anticipated rematch. Volkananovsk previously beat ‘Blessed’ by unanimous decision at UFC 245 to win the title.

In the co-main event women’s flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko was due to defend against Joanne Calderwood before she was forced to withdraw due to a leg injury. The only other fight that was official for the card was a heavyweight bout between Tai Tuivasa and Jarjis Danho.

The MMA promotion took to social media to announce the card has been temporarily shelved due to an Australian ban on public gatherings, it read.

“Due to current state and national restrictions on public gatherings and travel, UFC 251 originally scheduled for Perth, Western Australia on Sunday, June 7 has been postponed.

“UFC looks forward to returning to Perth in the near future with a PPV event in partnership with tourism western Australia. Fans can register their interest to receive date, ticketing and bout information at UFC.com/Perth.”

It’s unclear right now when or if the event will be rescheduled.

UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski doesn’t expect to face Max Holloway this summer.

Volkanovski was slated to face Holloway in a rematch that was set to headline the promotion’s return to Perth at UFC 251 on June 6. However, things are very uncertain now thanks in part to the coronavirus outbreak that has put the world at a standstill.

Three UFC events have already been postponed indefinitely and while Dana White plans on making UFC 249 happen later this month and resume the schedule from thereon out, the chances look slim.

A fight with Holloway was never officially confirmed but given the current situation, Volkanovski — currently quarantined — doesn’t expect the card to go ahead:

“To be honest with you, nothing was signed; nothing was locked in,” Volkanovski told ESPN. “Everything was pointing towards Perth, but we’re still not sure whether it’s going to go ahead or whether it’s not.

“But I’m in a weird position where I’m being quarantined; not being able to train properly; not being able to get over to New Zealand … so are we still going to be doing that card? I just don’t think that’s a good idea for me, especially coming off a broken hand. For me to try and overcome an injury and then go into a camp, and not be fully prepared in the camp, it’s not a good idea. So I don’t think the Perth card will go ahead, but if it does I don’t know the chances of me being on it.”

Volkanovski became the featherweight champion after outpointing Holloway over five rounds in the UFC 245 co-main event in December. “The Great” remains undefeated in the UFC with an 8-0 promotional record.

Shevchenko

The UFC’s return to Perth has taken a hit as Valentina Shevchenko will no longer be competing.

Shevchenko was set to defend her women’s flyweight title against Joanne Calderwood in the co-main event of UFC 251 taking place June 6.

However, “Bullet” will have to wait for her next potential title defense due to an ongoing leg injury per ESPN. Shevchenko sustained the original injury during her title defense against Katlyn Chookagian at UFC 247 last month but it hasn’t completely healed up since.

Shevchenko expects to be fully healed up by the end of August.

Even if Shevchenko was ready to compete, it is unlikely the card would have gone ahead given how the coronavirus pandemic continues to put a halt on the world. Calderwood believes the fight getting pushed back may even be a blessing in disguise given what’s going on right now:

“We got word last week that it’s going to get pushed back,” Calderwood told MMA Fighting’s Eurobash podcast. “Not because of this whole thing, but something on her end. I’m not sure if I’m supposed to say that, but we know for sure that it’s not going to be on June 6. I don’t know, I’m not sure what happened or what’s what, but it’s been pushed back. It could be a blessing in disguise.”

UFC 251 is expected to be headlined by a featherweight title fight between Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway.

Do you think UFC 251 will still take place or will it get postponed?
