Khabib Nurmagomedov believes Tony Ferguson will not be the same fighter once he returns to action.
Nurmagomedov takes on Justin Gaethje in a lightweight title unification bout that will headline UFC 254 on October 24. Of course, it could have been Ferguson that Nurmagomedov was facing later this month.
However, Ferguson would lose to Gaethje via fifth-round TKO in their interim lightweight title fight at UFC 249 back in May, further cursing a dream contest with Nurmagomedov. And as far as “The Eagle” is concerned, he doesn’t believe a fight with Ferguson is possible anymore.
In fact, he even believes Ferguson may be finished at the top given the punishment he took from Gaethje.
“Nobody can be the same for a long time. Nobody,” Nurmagomedov told ESPN. “No Tony Ferguson, no Khabib, nobody. One day, somebody gonna beat you, something gonna happen, God doesn’t give nobody the power, reaction, mental, one level, always.
“One day you’re going to go down and his day come. It was May. Tony Ferguson’s time is finished. Now he’s gonna come back, and someone gonna beat him again, I believe. Because when you take damage like this, you’ll never going to be the same. Never ever. Even if you’re Tony Ferguson. He took too much damage.”
However, there is one way Ferguson could get back into title contention and that’s by competing at UFC 254.
“El Cucuy” was originally slated to face Dustin Poirier at the event but failed negotiations with the UFC meant the fight didn’t come to fruition. Michael Chandler was offered instead but Ferguson took issue with the new signing being paid more than him.
Instead, Nurmagomedov has called on Ferguson to face Islam Makhachev — currently without an opponent after Rafael dos Anjos tested positive for COVID-19.
“Right now, [Ferguson] have choice,” Nurmagomedov added. “He can come to Fight Island and fight with Islam Makhachev. Islam have six-fight win streak, he is almost in the Top 10. He has a name. Why not? Why he don’t want to take this fight? UFC is going to give him good money. Ali Abdelaziz is going to give him $100,000 and $100,000. After this, maybe he can fight for the title if he win. But I think his time is finished.”

Michael Chandler is still more than down to fight Tony Ferguson at UFC 254 later this month.
Chandler is currently the official backup for the lightweight title unification main event between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Justin Gaethje on October 24.
He was originally offered fights with both Dustin Poirier and Tony Ferguson. However, both fighters had negotiation issues with the UFC with Ferguson, in particular, being aggrieved at Chandler being paid more than him.
“Now you’re going to bring in a new dude who I have no f*cking clue who (he) is,” Ferguson told ESPN. “The dude has less than 100k on Twitter and you’re trying to get him more notoriety by throwing him against me and throwing him on the Khabib card. I get that but don’t pay the f*ck more than us. He has zero time in the UFC. I don’t know about roids and all that stuff. I don’t get into that kinda shit with everybody.”
Chandler would hit back at him soon after.
Though the chances of a fight happening now are unlikely with just under two weeks to go for the event, Chandler is still open to facing Ferguson in what is the only fight that currently interests him — other than a title bout, of course.
“I’m already going Oct. 24th, I’m already making weight, so yes, I would definitely fight him,” Chandler told MMA Junkie. “He’s kind of the only guy that I’m interested in fighting right now. It’s already been talked about, so you don’t add any names to that hat whenever a guy in the top five is already talked about.”
Chandler added that when he signed with the UFC, he said yes to all the potential opponents that were offered his way. And as far as he is concerned, Ferguson robbed himself of the chance of competing against him on the biggest card of the year.
“Tony Ferguson was on the table, he said no; Dustin Poirier was on the table, he said no,” Chandler added. “Since, Dustin Poirier has said yes to Conor (McGregor) and I think Conor has said yes to Dustin. So that leaves Tony Ferguson. That’s why I said in his way with all caps on Twitter, I said you already turned down a fight against me on the biggest card of the year. This card was going to have a lot of eyeballs and we could’ve been the co-main event and got this tournament going as he likes to talk.
“I could’ve stepped on his mat and see how things shake out. I think I go out there and beat Tony Ferguson and I immediately put myself on the title picture.”

As a result, Chandler will now serve as the official backup for the UFC 254 main event between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Justin Gaethje on October 24.
And as far as Chandler is concerned, it’s Ferguson’s fault for turning down a fight with him. Interestingly, he also capitalized every word which is what Ferguson usually does on social media.

Ferguson is yet to respond at the moment.
However, he is certainly right to be aggrieved if the UFC was in fact offering Chandler more money than him, especially given his name value and standing as a former interim champion.
