Khabib Nurmagomedov has never been afraid to be specific about his game plan heading into a fight, and that has not changed in the weeks prior to his UFC 254 unification bout against Justin Gaethje. Justin Gaethje is widely considered the toughest matchup for Khabib Nurmagomedov stylistically. There are many reasons for that. Physically, Justin […]

When viewing a typical Khabib Nurmagomedov domination, it’s hard to say if anyone in the UFC has what it takes to hand him his first defeat. But the reality of the matter is that every man is fallible and capable of defeat. At UFC 254, interim lightweight champion Justin Gaethje will look to demonstrate that there is no exception to this rule, including the seemingly inconquerable Khabib Nurmagomedov, and he knows what it will take to successfully do so.
“My confidence is probably my biggest factor right now, paired with the power that I possess, paired with the coach that I have. That’s a dangerous combination,” Gaethje said during a UFC 254 conference call. “I don’t care if I win or lose, at the end of the day, as long as I make my family happy, as long as I’m proud of my performance, then it doesn’t matter. That’s what makes me most dangerous. I don’t know if he’s ever fought someone like that – he probably has.
“And another factor is a lot of hard work, a lot of skill and a little bit of luck in this game. Anybody can go to sleep. He’s a fool if he doesn’t think he can go to sleep.”
Justin Gaethje has good reason to be confident heading into the fight of his life, as his aforementioned power has lead to four consecutive stoppage victories, including being the only man to TKO the seemingly indestructible “El Cucuy,” Tony Ferguson at UFC 249. But as Khabib Nurmagomedov has stated, everyone believes they will be the one to defeat him until after the first round. On October 24, we’ll see if Gathje’s confidence and 100% finish rate remain unshaken through the outcome of the fight.
What do you think are Justin Gaethje’s chances to defeat Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 254?
UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov doesn’t know what the future holds for him. However, he doesn’t think he’ll be retiring just yet. Nurmagomedov will return to action on October 24 when he faces Justin Gaethje in a lightweight title unification clash that will headline UFC 254.
It will be his first fight since the death of his father Abdulmanap with many observers initially skeptical about whether he would compete at all given how close he was to his father.
However, that’s not the case anymore but what will be next for “The Eagle” if he comes out on top against Gaethje?
“Very good question, honestly, very good question,” Nurmagomedov said during UFC 254 virtual media day. “I don’t know. I don’t know. You know, for example, I’m going to finish Justin Gaethje inside the cage October 24 — what else? This is a very good question. We’ll see. I love competition. I love competing with the best fighters in the world. That’s why I’m here. You know, I’m not in UFC to make money. I have a lot of business projects outside the UFC. I can make money. It’s a good question – very good question.
“… I don’t think (I’ll retire). We have a couple of options. We’re going to think about this after this fight. Dana told me after this fight, he has something special for me but I told him, ‘please keep this (to yourself). After the fight, we’re going to talk.’ They said, ‘we have very big things after this fight for you.’ We’ll see.”

The UFC will not be finding Tony Ferguson a replacement opponent at UFC 254, they’ve instead just decided to pull him from the card entirely.
‘El Cucuy’ was initially scheduled to face fellow former interim UFC Lightweight Champion Dustin Poirier, and the booking stayed together for a while there. The issues started when Poirier wanted more money, but he and the UFC couldn’t come to an agreement, and he removed himself from the fight considering.
After about a week of thinking we’d see Ferguson fight someone else on October 24, we’ve been told he won’t be fighting on the card after all.
Aaron Bronstener of TSN broke the news earlier today via Twitter:
“I spoke with Dana White earlier and he confirmed that Tony Ferguson will no longer be competing at UFC 254.”
This is incredibly unfortunate, UFC 254 is going to be absolutely huge, there are so many great fights on that card. This was just another great fight with two of the top five lightweights in the world. The card is headlined by the two top lightweights in the world, Khabib Nurmagomedov and Justin Gaethje.
Tony Ferguson versus Dustin Poirier was going to be the co-main event, undoubtedly a No. 1 contender fight, and also the backup to the main event, should anything happen to either the interim or undisputed champion before the fight happens.
Now that ‘El Cucuy’ is pulled from the card, he won’t be eligible to serve as a backup. Instead, the UFC has announced that newly signed multiple-time Bellator Lightweight Champion Michael Chandler is going to be the backup.
Honestly, they already had a fight put together where one of them was serving as the potential backup, they should have booked Chandler against Ferguson. How insane would that have been? We wouldn’t even be upset that Ferguson wouldn’t be fighting Poirier anymore.
Nonetheless, we do have a new exciting talent added to the UFC’s lightweight division in Michael Chandler. He’s arguably Bellator’s most successful fighter they’ve ever had, the only two that’d rival that are Patricio Freire and Ben Askren.
Chandler versus Ferguson would have been a great fight to see. Now that we know he’s the backup for the UFC 254 main event, he may or may not have to fill in. Who would you like to see Michael Chandler fight in his UFC debut, and who would you like to see Tony Ferguson face next?
