Kamaru Usman

Once again, Kamaru Usman has demonstrated why he is deserving of the 170lb title strap he wears around his waist. A clinical display of striking on Saturday night against Gilbert Burns, demonstrated how well rounded a martial artist he is. Having been victorious over Burns, there are now very few welterweights in the UFC that Usman has not yet defeated.

Usman initially called out Jorge Masvidal. Offering ‘Gamebred’ the chance for a rematch, this time with a full camp. However in the post-fight press conference, ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ raised the case for an even bigger opponent. This matchup being with Georges St-Pierre, the only man who could challenge Usman’s status as the greatest welterweight in the world. Usman had the following to say about GSP:

“I love George, I really do. I mean, one of the inspirations early when I started watching this sport but I’m a whole different animal nowadays. It’s a different ball game, I love George, I think George is tough, you know. I consider him one of the greatest but I fight with me and George, okay. George was massive with the jab but you saw what I did with jabs” (as transcribed by SportSkeeda).

GSP has been retired for some time now, and his last fight was at middleweight in 2017. He has not fought at welterweight since 2013 when he picked up a close decision victory over Johnny Hendricks. However, ‘Rush’ holds one of the most impressive resumes in UFC history, and is a constant contender for GOAT status. Despite this, UFC president Dana White has stated that he believes Usman will surpass GSP. One way to begin challenging GSP’s status would be to face him in the octagon. St-Pierre has previously expressed interest in fighting Khabib Nurmagomedov, so the idea of him returning to the sport is not unfathomable.

Thompson

Stephen Thompson decided to shoot his shot following UFC 258.

Kamaru Usman successfully defended his welterweight title following an impressive third-round TKO win over Gilbert Burns in the UFC 258 headliner on Saturday night.

With the win, Usman came out on top against another top contender in the welterweight division and if he keeps it up, he could be on his way to becoming one of the greatest fighters of all time.

However, one fighter he is yet to face is former title challenger Thompson who called for a fight with Usman following the event.

“Well seeing as how I’m the only guy in the top 5 that Usman hasn’t fought yet….I guess I’m next…makes sense right? Great performance @USMAN84kg ! #ufc258”

Thompson is on a two-fight winning streak following impressive victories over Vicente Luque and Geoff Neal and it certainly wouldn’t be the worst thing to have him challenge for the title, especially with plans for Colby Covington to face Leon Edwards.

However, with Usman calling for a fight with Jorge Masvidal, it’s possible “Wonderboy” will need at least one more win.

What do you think of Thompson facing Usman next?

After being rescheduled multiple times the fight finally went down at UFC 258 and the two grapplers would up participating in a matchup contested mostly on the feet. After dropping Usman earlier, Burns found himself overwhelmed by Usman’s precision striking with the champion getting the win via TKO in the third round. Outside of the main event, there were many performances warranting bonuses.

The first bonus went to Polyana Viana on the preliminary card for her submission victory over Mallory Martin. As the bout began Viana was quickly able to engage on the ground setting up a triangle choke and using the position to land some savage elbows. It looked as though the fight was near a finish, however, after Hernandez rose to the feet and landed a few shots Vieira began to show major signs of fatigue. After barely surviving into the second round, Vieira was dropped with a series of strikes before being submitted midway through the second round.

The third bonus of the night came via submission once again when Marquez managed to come back and find the finish against Maki Pitolo in the third round of their middleweight bout. While Pitolo was dominating the first two rounds in the third the tides turned to allow Marquez to get the finish.

The final bonus of the night came in the main event when Kamaru Usman successfully defending his title against Gilbert Burns. Usman had to fight through some adversity early in the goings before taking the lead in the second round and closing the show in the third.
