Donald Trump

Whether you support him, hate him, or are indifferent, the crowd at UFC 264 had a little bit of everything when it came to their reaction to former U.S. President Donald Trump entering T-Mobile Arena to watch the fights.

Trump became the first U.S. President to attend a UFC event back at UFC 244 when welterweight stars Nate Diaz and Jorge Masvidal fought in the main event for the BMF belt. At the Conor McGregor-Dustin Poirier trilogy, Trump and his secret service detail sat directly behind UFC president Dana White to watch the last two fights of the card.

As per usual with a Trump public appearance, the fan reception was ranged from “USA” chants to audible boos for the 45th President of the United States.

Politics aside, it’s certainly a milestone that the UFC is able to garner the attention of politicians and high-level celebrities for their events. It seems like yesterday that former Arizona senator John McCain (R. AZ) referred to mixed martial arts as “human cockfighting”.

Nowadays, as the sport of MMA increases sharply in popularity, so does the notoriety of people in the seats.

Trump and a full-capacity crowd were treated to quite an eventful night at UFC 264. In the main event, Poirier earned a wild doctor’s stoppage victory after McGregor fractured his left ankle towards the end of the opening round. Just hours after the event, McGregor would undergo surgery on a fractured tibia at a nearby hospital.

Trump is apparently a massive fan of combat sports, and more specifically the UFC and White. He has a true fan in the form of UFC welterweight contender Colby Covington, who visited the White House on numerous occasions during Trump’s time in DC.

After losing the 2020 Presidential Election to Joe Biden, Trump is still receiving mixed reviews from the general public. But one thing is for certain, he’ll more than likely continue to be a presence at UFC pay-per-views in the future.

Israel Adesanya Conor McGregor

UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya and Conor McGregor used to be under the same management, and have become friends over the years. After McGregor’s brutal leg break at UFC 264, Adesanya provided his live reaction while watching the fight to McGregor’s injury suffered against Dustin Poirier.

Adesanya is fresh off his dominant performance against Marvin Vettori at UFC 263 earlier this summer, and will more than likely face former champion Robert Whittaker in a title rematch later this year. He has taken the UFC by storm since earning the belt and is also a prominent presence on social media and YouTube.

Adesanya posted a recent video to his YouTube channel in which he is seen live reacting to the graphic injury McGregor suffered in the UFC 264 main event.

“Yeah, it was a good fight,” Adesanya said in the video. “I like the way Conor opened up. This is one of the reasons I don’t jump for guillotines because Eugene says if you fail a guillotine, you’re on bottom. That’s the problem. And it was tight. It was tight, but the cage was in the way, so Dustin was able to stop and defend by not letting him get his leg wrapped and put him in guard.”

“That was just a freak accident. Dustin reckons it was a check, Conor reckons it wasn’t. Yeah, crazy fight. They’re definitely gonna do it again. They’re gonna run it back and then we’re all gonna watch.”

Adesanya can be seen audibly unnerved at the sight of McGregor’s left leg collapsing from underneath him towards the end of the opening round against Poirier. Before that, McGregor had thrown a series of vicious leg kicks but ended up fracturing his lower tibia after getting hit by an elbow off of a kick.

With the win by doctor’s stoppage, Poirier will challenge UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira for the belt later this year. McGregor underwent successful surgery this weekend on his fractured tibia and is estimated to be out 6-7 weeks at the very least.

Conor McGregor Was Close to a Finish Before Injury – John Kavanagh

Conor McGregor

UFC lightweight Conor McGregor‘s longtime head coach John Kavanagh says that “The Notorious” was close to securing a finish at UFC 264 over Dustin Poirier had he not suffered a devastating lower tibia injury towards the end of the opening round.

The trilogy bout between McGregor and Poirier came to an abrupt halt after McGregor snapped his leg in the closing seconds of the first round in the main event. It’s still unclear what specifically caused the injury, as that has been debated since the fight; but his left leg did appear to collapse from underneath him following an elbow from Poirier as McGregor threw a kick.

In a recent interview with Wimp 2 Warrior’s Laura Sanko, Kavanagh explained why he felt that up until the injury, everything was going according to plan for McGregor.

“It was going fantastic,” Kavanagh said. “I thought (McGregor) looked really, really good in there. I wasn’t concerned at all. I was actually really, really happy. At the 4:30 mark or even the 4:45 mark (of Round 1), everything is gravy. I thought energy looked good, technique looked good. A few adjustments in between rounds, and I thought Round 2 we were well on track to getting a finish there, or keep the rhythm going for the rest of the fight.”

“Credit to Dustin. He won. It’s an unfulfilling end to the night. It doesn’t feel properly finished. No closure.”

Despite the unfortunate end to one of the most entertaining trilogies in UFC history, McGregor and Poirier both sound very interested in a rematch for the future. McGregor already began the promotion process during his UFC 264 post-fight interview, in which he furiously verbally attacked Poirier and his wife in the octagon following the bout.

Poirier will now challenge UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira later this year, and the UFC pay-per-view in December is the way-too-early target for the two to fight. UFC president Dana White also confirmed during his post-fight presser that Poirier vs. Oliveira is still the fight to make despite the controversial finish to the McGregor trilogy.
