UFC Welterweight Champion Kamaru Usman has suggested Colby Covington had to create a controversial act in order to reach the top in the promotion.

There’s certainly no debate surrounding Usman’s journey to the top of the welterweight mountain. His rise has been as impressive as it’s been destructive. “The Nigerian Nightmare” is unbeaten in 18 professional fights, and hasn’t lost since 2013. After debuting on MMA’s biggest stage in 2015, Usman defeated names like Leon Edwards, Warlley Alves, who’s responsible for the only blemish on Covington’s record, Sean Strickland, Demian Maia, and Rafael dos Anjos.

After going 9-0, Usman challenged Tyron Woodley for the welterweight throne at UFC 235. In dominant fashion, he controlled “The Chosen One” for five rounds, securing a comfortable unanimous decision victory. In his first title defense, the champ faced controversial contender Covington. After a back-and-forth war, Usman finished “Chaos” in the final round.

Now nearly two years later, Usman has racked up successful defenses over Gilbert Burns and Jorge Masvidal, and is set to face the challenge of Covington again at UFC 268 this weekend.

Usman Believes He’s Worked Harder Than Covington To Get Where He Is

While Usman’s journey to championship glory and GOAT contention has seen him beat top contenders and impress with both his dominance and recent finishes, many believe Covington’s climb to the top of the welterweight division has solely been down to his brash persona.

Fans will no doubt remember the debut of Covington’s outspoken personality at UFC Fight Night 119 in 2017. Having defeated Maia in his home country, “Chaos” addressed the Sao Paulo crowd in his post-fight Octagon interview, during which he described Brazil as a “dump” and branded the fans as “filthy animals.”

Since then, many have claimed Covington’s switch-up came from the fact his fighting style wasn’t exciting the UFC brass and getting him the opportunities he desired. During a recent interaction with Michael Bisping for BT Sport, Usman echoed that sentiment. He suggested the major difference between him and his arch-rival is the way in which they’ve progressed up the UFC ladder.

“I don’t really care (if Covington puts on an act). You know, because as a man, you have to have enough integrity. You have to be responsible for what you say. And at the end of the day, as both fathers here, you have to be able to go home and look your kids, look your daughter in the face and have her understand who you are. So, if she’s looking at something on television and saying, ‘Daddy, why’d you say that stuff? Is that you?’ And you gotta tell her, ‘ No, it’s just fake.’ How do you feel, as a man, doing that?

“I didn’t need to do that. That’s the difference between him and I. I stood behind my work, I continued to work, and I still got here, you know. He had to do that, he had to put that on to get here. So, what does that say about you as a man, looking for a shortcut?”

They’ll certainly be no shortcuts for Covington on Saturday if he wishes to have undisputed gold wrapped around his waist for the first time. With his recent defenses and his development under Trevor Wittman, many believe “The Nigerian Nightmare” will wrap things up inside Madison Square Garden quicker than he did at UFC 245. With that in mind, “Chaos” will be looking to shock the world come November 6.

Do you think Kamaru Usman will defeat Colby Covington for the second time at UFC 268?

Gaethje Reveals The One Way His Fight With Chandler Could “Suck”

Justin Gaethje Michael Chandler

The bout between Michael Chandler and Justin Gaethje seems to have action written all over it, but there is one way the flight could suck.

The main card of UFC 268 will be kicked off with the return of Gaethje, Who has not fought since his 2020 title loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov. He is returning against Chandler, who is fresh off his own title fight loss, when Charles Oliveira TKOd him to win the vacant title.

Aside from the fact that this is potentially a number one contender’s fight, this about has action written all over it, with both men being known to throw caution to the wind and brawl. However, Justin Gaethje explained to media at the UFC 268 pre-fight press conference, but there is a specific way where this fight does not end up being fan friendly.

“These guys saw Khabib take me down. A lot of guys have tried to take me down in my career. He was the one that was successful, so maybe they see a path to victory there. I do think that (Chandler) is a smart guy, and I think that he thinks that he would be smart to try to turn this into a wrestling match for a round or two. So yeah, if he was successful there, which he will not be, then it could suck, but not going to happen,” Gaethje said.

It certainly does not seem to be out of the realm of possibility, that Michael Chandler will at least try to wrestle and control Justin Gaethje, provided he could even do so. On the off chance that this is what happens, that would be extremely disappointing for the fans who were expecting a bloodbath, but given the stakes it would make perfect sense for Chandler.

You can check out Justin Gaethje’s entire pre-fight press conference media appearance below:

Masvidal: Covington Has Too Many “Yes Men” Around Him

UFC welterweight Jorge Masvidal doesn’t believe Colby Covington’s new team of “yes men” will give him a better chance at dethroning Kamaru Usman the second time around.

Colby Covington, Jorge Masvidal

UFC welterweight Jorge Masvidal doesn’t believe Colby Covington’s new team of “yes men” will give him a better chance at dethroning Kamaru Usman the second time around.

Prior to 2020, Covington trained at American Top Team, the same gym as Masvidal. With the likes of Conan Silveira in his corner, “Chaos” attempted to reach the welterweight mountaintop at UFC 245 in 2019. In a competitive and enthralling affair, the former interim champion took Usman to the limit. After some clean shots led to a final-round TKO, “The Nigerian Nightmare” had successfully defended his belt for the first time. Covington has continued to lay heavy blame for the defeat on his ATT corner.

Now training under the likes of Daniel Valverde and Cesar Carneiro over at MMA Masters, “Chaos” will look to have undisputed welterweight gold wrapped around his waist for the first time on the second attempt. He’ll run it back with the dominant champion in the main event of UFC 268 this weekend.

Masvidal Doesn’t Believe Team Switch Will Help Covington

Despite Covington believing his new camp and fresh perspective will prove crucial inside Madison Square Garden on Saturday night, Usman has also developed a new partnership. For his last few fights, he’s trained under the tutelage of renowned coach Trevor Wittman. He’s also trained alongside lightweight contender Justin Gaethje and UFC Women’s Strawweight Champion Rose Namajunas, who will also both be in action at UFC 268.

As well as Gaethje, fellow former title challenger Masvidal has predicted another successful defense for Usman. Speaking on ATT’s Punchin’ In podcast, “Gamebred” slammed Covington’s new team, branding them as “yes men.” With that in mind, and having not seen any improvements from Covington since his 2019 defeat to the champ, Masvidal expects Usman to have his hand raised again.

“I think who is gonna win and who I want to win is Usman… I mean, the team that he’s at right now is just a bunch of yes men. They’re just telling him yes to whatever he says. You can tell by the attitudes and stuff. I just, I don’t think He’s gonna do anything different. I think it’s gonna get worse and worse. I don’t see that his grappling’s got any better. He’s gonna have to grapple with Usman if he wants to get him down and Usman can wrestle back into him a little bit. I can see Colby getting tired and then Usman landing some big shots.”

Despite many hoping to see Masvidal and Covington, two former friends and teammates, settle their beef inside the Octagon, the 36-year-old has made it clear that the fight he desires the most right now is a trilogy with Usman. With that in mind, it’s no surprise to see him rooting for “The Nigerian Nightmare” this weekend.

“Gamebred” will be hoping to move a step closer to returning to title contention when he faces #3-ranked contender Leon Edwards at UFC 269 on December 11.

Do you agree with Jorge Masvidal? Do you think Kamaru Usman will defeat Colby Covington again?

Alex Pereira

Alex Pereira, the decorated kickboxer, is focused on winning a UFC title not fighting Israel Adesanya again.

Pereira is set to make his UFC debut in the prelim headliner against Andreas Michailidis at UFC 268. It’s an intriguing matchup and due to the fact Pereira holds two wins over Adesanya in kickboxing, including a KO win, many think he will get fast-tracked to the belt. Yet, for the Brazilian, he says he isn’t here for Adesanya, instead, he wants the belt.

“I didn’t come here after Adesanya, I came here to be a champion,” Pereira said at UFC 268 media day. “Who knows, maybe by the time I get there he’s no longer the champion anymore. So I’m just taking it step by step. I just got to the organization and I’m just aiming to be a champion here. If I get there and it’s him, fine. If it’s not him, I’ll work with what I have.”

Entering his UFC debut, Alex Pereira knows many view him as the guy that knocked out Israel Adesanya. However, for him, he says that doesn’t matter, as he’s just here to fight.

“It makes no difference for me,” Pereira explained. “I did beat the guy, it’s part of my story. Maybe if I had lost to him it would annoy me a little bit.”

Pereira is just 3-1 in MMA but is on a three-fight losing skid as he lost his pro debut back in 2015. He then had two fights in 2016 and made his return in 2020 in LFA where he scored a highlight-reel KO win over Thomas Powell. He’s a former two-division GLORY kickboxing champion and also knocked out current UFC light heavyweight, Dustin Jacoby in kickboxing as well.

How do you think Alex Pereira will fare in the UFC? And, do you think he wins his fight at UFC 268?

Zhang Weili Preparing For Hostile UFC 268 Crowd With Simulated Boos

Zhang Weili

Zhang Weili isn’t leaving any stone unturned to prepare for a hostile away crowd at UFC 268, with her team even simulating boos and verbal abuse during training.

Zhang will attempt to win back her strawweight title from Rose Namajunas when they meet this Saturday at Madison Square Garden in New York. In their first encounter just over six months ago, Zhang was knocked out spectacularly inside two minutes by a Namajunas head kick, ending her 21-fight win streak.

During that loss, “Magnum” was booed mercilessly by the Jacksonville, Florida crowd at UFC 261—the first full capacity event since the COVID-19 outbreak—and many believed the hostile treatment spooked the 32-year-old. Zhang herself even later admitted that she wasn’t prepared for the level of animosity dispensed at her.

Zhang Weili Takes Her Mental Preparations To A Bizarre New Level

This weekend, Zhang isn’t expecting anything different from the New York crowd, and as such, she’s mentally preparing for the prospect of walking into a wall of boos. And the best way to prepare, thinks her team, is to simulate that hostility while Zhang is training.

“After having the experience last time, we understand that because in the US I am away and my opponent is at home, a lot of things will definitely happen,” Zhang told Chinese media this week (h/t South China Morning Post). “So after we came this time, we have made targeted preparations for our training and the atmosphere of the scene. We are doing simulations, there will be audiences, they are not optimistic about you, they come to boo you.”

So, expect to see a far more mentally resilient Zhang Weili at UFC 268, and possibly, a new and improved version of herself. After all, she’s been training at Fight Ready MMA in Scottsdale, Arizona, under the tutelage of none other than “Triple C” himself, Henry Cejudo.

What do you think? Will Zhang Weili reclaim her strawweight title from Rose Namajunas?
