Charles Oliveira

In the main event of UFC 274, lightweight champion Charles Oliveira takes on former interim titleholder Justin Gaethje. Oliveira holds the record for submission finishes inside the UFC, whilst Gaethje is coming off a fight of the year candidate against Michael Chandler at UFC 268.

Whilst Gaethje opened as the betting favorite, gamblers have clearly been taking ‘Do Bronx,’ as the champ goes into fight week as the bookie’s favourite to win. Both men are such dangerous customers that it’s an incredibly hard one to pick. Let’s see what the LowKickMMA staff have to say:

LowKick MMA Staff Predictions for Charles Oliveira vs. Justin Gaethje

Frank Bonada

Charles Oliveira vs. Justin Gaethje is an incredibly hard fight to pick. Both men are lethal action fighters who have proved time and time again that they can finish just about anyone. Oliveira brings an extremely dangerous submission threat, whilst Gaethje has the ability to put a hellacious beating on his opponents that can break even the toughest fighters. Personally, I will be supporting Oliveira, but if I had to make a prediction, I would have to side with Gaethje by KO/TKO.

Prediction: Justin Gaethje

Ross Markey

Despite what facts tell us from Charles Oliveira’s reign as UFC lightweight champion, I still have a perpetual thought that the Brazilian is likely on the cusp of a title loss. He managed to rally expertly against Michael Chandler to land the undisputed title, and then in December, was forced to survive some rocky moments en route to a title defense win against Dustin Poirier. A 10-fight winning run should also help put to rest doubts of Oliveira’s sudden demise, however, despite finding numerous routes to success for the Sao Paulo native against the aforenoted duo, I’m finding it quite difficult to side with the defending champion against challenger, Gaethje. Former interim titleholder, Gaethje – stylistically at least, presents such a dangerous opponent for Oliveira. His striking is second to none at lightweight. His wrestling defense also hangs with the division’s upper echelon, but Oliveira still somehow tends to find a way to traverse tricky tracks. A measured and concise striking approach from Gaethje landed him a unanimous decision win over Chandler last November. And I believe a similar approach from the Trevor Wittman product leads him to a title-clinching performance – courtesy of a stoppage victory late in the headlining tangle.

Prediction: Justin Gaethje

Nikhil Sharma

Super excited to watch this fight go down. Both competitors are great and have the ability to win come this Saturday. I’m curious to see how Oliveira will manage those low kicks from Gaethje. I see Oliveira trying to survive the first round or two and then coming back for a submission win. One thing for sure, the win will be a finish and the fight won’t go the distance. Prediction: Charles Oliveira by submission or TKO

Prediction: Charles Oliveira

Lewis Simpson

I find it so difficult to pick against the champ, purely down to his grit to come out on top after facing adversity. With that being said, I feel Justin Gaethje has the tools to get it done. My official pick is Gaethje by knockout. I anticipate Gaethje walking forward, putting on the heavy pressure as always, throwing bombs. Oliveria is known to get dropped at times, and I believe once the power of Gaethje lands frequently, he won’t recover. Gaethje’s leg kicks will play a huge factor in the early rounds. If he can completely shut down the movement of Oliveria, I think he’s got the golden ticket to a victory. Gaethje does need to be on the ball if the fight hits the mat, but I believe Oliveria will struggle to get the fight to the ground early on. Overall, Gaethje’s power, pressure, and relentless style will be too much for Oliveria.

Prediction: Justin Gaethje

Keelin McNamara

For me, this fight ends with Charles Oliveira retaining the UFC lightweight championship. Don’t get me wrong, the longer the fight stays on the feet, the more I think it favors Gaethje, especially with those slamming leg kicks. However, I’m going with Charles because I see this fight going to the ground, and I stand by my view that ‘Do Bronx’ is the most dangerous, offensive BJJ fighter in MMA today. I see a third-round triangle choke for the champ.

Prediction: Charles Oliveira

Olli Brockett

With the UFC Lightweight division stacked with top-level competitors, at UFC 274 we get to witness the best of the bunch go head-to-head. The Oliveria vs. Gaethjie showdown is an interesting affair, with both athletes being very technical. However, with Justin Gaethje’s renowned power, in addition, to Oliviera’s vulnerability from uppercuts within the pocket, I see ‘The Highlight’ coming out with the biggest highlight of his career with a KO against the Champion. Nevertheless, this is not a fight I will be betting on, it is too close to call.

Prediction: Justin Gaethje

Alex Nikollaj

That’s such a tough one, both guys are so damn good. If I had to pick, I would give a slight edge to Oliveira, but I think Gaethje is his toughest challenge at the moment.

UFC lightweight Justin Gaethje has stated he believes Charles Oliveira will ‘quit’ against him at UFC 274’s main event.

This weekend, Gaethje is set to have his second attempt at UFC gold as he challenges Olivieria for the 155lb title in what will be Oliveira’s second title defense.

Gaethje’s confidence has been evident throughout the build-up to the bout and the American’s intensity has been growing along with it. Pledges to ‘put a hole’ in Oliveira’s face have been put in place by ‘The Highlight’ but when talking to ESPN, Gaethje would go as far as saying that Oliveira would quit.

“I wasn’t being overly critical, I wasn’t saying he was a bad champion,” Gatehje said. “I was saying that in the times that he’s lost, he didn’t even get knocked out, he quit sometimes. The choice to quit is something one makes, and once you make it, you can make it again, because you know that it’s there.

“I don’t believe I’ve ever made that choice,” Gaethje continued. “Some people haven’t and I believe some people have. believe that he has, and that’s all I was saying. I believe, deep down, he knows his way out, and that’s to quit whenever he gets hit too many times too hard.

“But, again, deep down, once it happened once it will happen again, and I’m the perfect guy to show it to him.”

Justin Gaethje Vs. Charles Oliveria

UFC 274’s main event has the potential to be a lightweight classic, with both men showing in their recent performances, which were some of the most entertaining of the year.

The champion, Oliveira, is coming off two back-to-back finishes over Michael Chandler and Dustin Poirier. In both fights, the Brazilian has had to make movie-like comebacks to finish some of the best the 155lb division has had to offer.

You must look no further than Gaethje’s nickname of ‘The Highlight’ to understand just how exciting he can be. Owner of slam finishes, one-punch knockouts, and 10 performance bonuses, Gaethje is guaranteed entertainment. He has produced some UFC classics in his time, his most recent against Chandler being arguable the best three-round fight ever.

It’s fight night, and we’ve got the latest odds for you as the hours draw closer to UFC 274!

Tonight, UFC 274: Oliveira vs. Gaethje takes place from The Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona. The UFC 274 main event will see Charles Oliveira taking on Justin Gaethje. The co-main event features Rose Namajunas defending her strawweight championship against Carla Esparza. And of course, we have Michael Chandler and Tony Ferguson paired against one another in their 2022 debuts.

The main event was originally intended to be a lightweight title bout. For Gaethje, it still is. For Oliveira, who missed weight, the stripped ex-champion can only position himself to fight for the vacant title in his next fight should he get past Gaethje. Oliveira will enter as the betting favorite coming into his title defense against Justin Gaethje.

This is familiar territory for Justin Gaethje, who was also the underdog coming into his first title shot against Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 254. Gaethje lost via submission that night, but this Saturday, he will try to leave those lessons in the past by winning his first UFC championship in his home state of Arizona.

Also, despite losing to Esparza seven years ago, Namajunas sits as a moderately small favorite over “The Cookie Monster.” Both fighters have had many fights in the Octagon since their initial encounter eight years ago.

The sportsbooks are not expecting Tony Ferguson to get back in the win column, as Michael Chandler is currently the largest betting favorite on the main card at -400. Chandler will enter this fight as the biggest favorite on the card. The general consensus is that Ferguson has not looked to be the same fighter that he used to be, which has caused the betting lines to strongly favor “Iron Mike.”

In other action on the main card, Ovince Saint Preux is currently placed as a -335 favorite over Mauricio Rua. At UFC Fight Night 56 in 2014, it was Saint Preux’s striking that got it done against the former champion Rua, with Saint Preux winning via first-round knockout. Saint Preux has picked up eight UFC wins since then, and they all no doubt played a factor in him being the favorite against the 40-year-old Rua.

Also, kicking off the main card, Donald Cerrone will enter as the favorite in what may be his final UFC fight when he takes on Joe Lauzon. Cerrone will enter as a -180 favorite, with the comeback of Joe Lauzon being +168.

UFC lightweight contender Justin Gaethje has responded to champion Charles Oliveira’s recent comments with a similar claim of his own.

This weekend, Gaethje will look to secure undisputed champion status at the second time of asking. Having won interim gold at UFC 249 in May 2020, “The Highlight” failed to secure the top spot in the division when he faced Khabib Nurmagomedov five months later.

Now, having rebounded with a victory in a Fight of the Year war with Michael Chandler, Gaethje is set to challenge for the title once again, this time against Charles Oliveira in the main event of UFC 274 on May 7.

Ahead of their collision inside Arizona’s Footprint Center, “Do Bronx” accused his next challenger of “coming up with a lot of bullshit” in order to win the pre-fight mind games.

In response, Gaethje has turned on his own BS radar, and says it’s taken him straight to the doorstep of the champion.

Gaethje Flips The Script On Oliveira’s ‘BS’ Claim

During a recent interview with Yahoo Sports’ Kevin Iole, Gaethje addressed Oliveira’s recent comments. While he welcomed the Brazilian’s pre-fight confidence, the #1-ranked lightweight did offer a different point of view when it comes to BS accusations.

“The Highlight” suggested that the “biggest bullshit” actually came out of the mouth of Oliveira while he was discussing his stoppage victory over Chandler at UFC 262 last May.

“Yeah, I love it (Oliveira’s confidence)…just by his interviews, I mean, him saying that he knocked out Chandler with his left hand—and he doesn’t even use his left hand,” noted Gaethje. “I mean, that’s—he was saying that I was saying bullshit. And then, he came out and said that. I was like, ‘That’s the biggest bullshit I ever heard.’

“I mean, people like us can knock people out with anything. And the biggest factor, which he’s not gonna ever understand, is the only reason that shot was so effective is because Chandler beat his ass for one round and then, for some reason, thought he was not in danger anymore,” suggested Gaethje.

Having appeared to suggest that Oliveira’s title victory was more down to Chandler’s own complacency rather than the champ’s ability, it stands to reason that Gaethje’s latest comments could be something brought up during fight week.

That, coupled with previous remarks that “The Highlight” made about a perceived ‘quit’ present in Oliveira, seems to suggest that fans could be set for a relatively heated build-up ahead of the May 7 PPV.

Fight week for UFC 274: Oliveira vs. Gaethje is upon us, and the countdown to this spring showcase has officially begun.

The UFC has released their official UFC 274 Countdown video, which features the tripleheader that will be on display this Saturday, May 7, 2022.

In the main event, Charles “Do Bronx” Oliveira will put up the lightweight gold for the second time as he looks to extend his incredible 10-fight winning streak. Next up for the solidified champion is the walking highlight reel and advocate for violence Justin Gaethje, who has been chomping at the bit for another shot at the title after his 2020 loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov.

As Gaethje seeks redemption, so will Rose Namajunas who will run it back with Carla Esparza seven years after Esparza became the inaugural UFC strawweight champion at Namajunas’ expense. This time, it will be Namajunas entering with the title and Esparza trying to extend her winning streak to six with the reward of championship gold awaiting her.

Finally, there will be a lightweight feature bout between fan favorites Michael Chandler and Tony Ferguson. Chandler and Ferguson will both attempt to put a halt to their losing streaks and no doubt put on a thriller for fans while doing so.

Here is what you can expect to see from the UFC 274 Countdown video.

“I have all the advantages over Justin Gaethje. I’m better on the feet, better on the ground, I’m better at wrestling, my mind is better than his, my spirit is better than his. I’m the champion. That’s the reality.” – Charles Oliveira

In the Countdown video, Oliveira’s humble beginnings and underdog roots were chronicled alongside his rise to cementing himself as the current lightweight king. And as noted in the above quote, his confidence throughout the episode was easy to detect.

“When it comes to competing, I’m a showoff. And I want to put myself in the history books as a champion of the lightweight division.” – Justin Gaethje

You can’t talk about a Justin Gaethje fight without making mention of the entertainment and violence factor that is always present when he takes the Octagon. But what was spotlighted even more in this episode is Gaethje’s desire to make the most of this second chance and become a UFC world champion.

In the episode, a vulnerable Rose Namajunas opens up about her loss to Esparza seven years ago. She and her coach/fiancé Pat Barry were very reflective about the experience and discussed the growth “Thug Rose” has experienced since then en route to becoming a confident champion ahead of UFC 274.

Former titleholder Carla Esparza spoke about paying her dues to make it back to the UFC title conversation and was also upfront about her game plan coming into her rematch against Namajunas.

“I’m going to be too sharp, too composed. I think he’s always there to be hit. I think he keeps his head right where I’m gonna want it. I’m going to be able to lad big shots. One of those shots is going to land right on the button, and Tony goes out.” – Michael Chandler
