Miesha Tate believes she can dethrone Valentina Shevchenko.

This past weekend, UFC women’s Flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko defended her title against the challenger Taila Santors at UFC 275. ‘Bullet’ looked dominant as ever going into the bout on an eight-fight win streak. However, Santos snapped her commanding reign with a competitive performance that many argued to be enough to get the nod.

Although Santos did not beat Shevchenko, who managed to come out on top by a split decision, Miesha Tate believes she exposed a weakness in the flyweight queen’s game.

Miesha Tate believes she can win against Valentina Shevchenko

In a recent appearance on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, ‘Cupcake’ talked about Shevchenko’s recent showing and said that she’d already identified the weak spots in her abilities during the Jennifer Maia fight in November 2020.

“When I saw Jennifer Maia get on top position, which was actually an error of Valentina’s… She was trying to get a takedown and slipped and ended on bottom. It also happened in the fight with Santos,” Tate said. “I just remember seeing Jennifer Maia hold her down and at that time, I never saw myself fighting at 125, so it didn’t really matter to me. But now, I watch that fight, I was absolutely salivating.”

Tate wanted to be the first one to definitively challenge Shevchenko.

“It was almost frustrating to see because for me, selfishly, I wanted to be the first one to say, like, ‘I knew this could be done.’ But now, people kind of see it.”

After Santos proved to be a tough challenge, Tate believes a similar performance against Shevchenko might not get her the same props.

“I didn’t want Valentina to look any less indestructible. I wanted her to stay where everybody thought she was so unbeatable because I already knew I could do that,” she said. “For me, it’s kind of like, ah, it’s been shown. “Now, people are going to believe in me more to be able to do it. I didn’t want that. I wanted to be the massive underdog. I wanted everybody to count me out.

“I wanted nobody to think Miesha Tate, five years retired, two kids, coming back 2-1 in the UFC, would be able to take out Valentina Shevchenko. But now, I think people can see a little bit of what I’ve been saying holds some water. I don’t know if that benefits me, but either way, the game plan hasn’t changed.”

Shevchenko named Tate during the post-fight scrum as a potential next opponent. Tate shared her thoughts on being called out by name by the champion.

“I know that she wants to fight me – it’s no secret,” she said. “I feel like everybody wants to fight me. I’m the uncrowned queen. I’ve got the target on my back almost as big as any champion.

“Everybody wants to take out the ‘Cupcake.’ But we’re going to get it done on July 2, and I think Valentina and I will lock horns. That’s the plan.”

Miesha Tate will take on Lauren Murphy at UFC 276 on July 2 in her flyweight debut.

Weili Zhang came out on top in her highly anticipated rematch with Joanna Jedrzejczyk.

This past weekend, Weili Zhang ran back her bout with Joanna Jedrzejczyk at UFC 275. Jedrzejczyk was marking her return to action after a two-year hiatus since last competing against Weili in March 2020.

Their first contest made for an incredible showing and was awarded The Fight of the Year. It also broke the record for the most significant strikes landed (combined) in a women’s UFC fight. Although Weili won the bout by a split decision, fans were clamoring to have the pair go at it again in one of the most highly awaited rematches.

As for their second outing, the two ladies got off to a fiery start with both going in for the kill. Weili would eventually connect with a brutal spinning back fist elbow to knock out Jedrejczyk halfway through round two. There were videos of the highlight reel finish going around online but there’s footage from a different angle that popped up recently.

In the video, shot cage side, the brutal knockout can be seen from a more intimate look as Jedrejczyk crashed down to the canvas and the focus stayed on her.

The former UFC women’s Strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk left her gloves inside the octagon to signal her retirement. During the post-fight press conference, she would announce an end to one of the most legendary careers in MMA.

Jedrzejczyk is an icon in Poland and has greatly helped advance women’s MMA. Having won the promotional gold in just her third outing, she also defended it five times in a row.

In a professional career spanning a decade, Jedrzejczyk leaves the sport with a record of 16-5 with her only losses coming to fellow strawweight champions Rose Namajunas and Weili Zhang, and to the reigning UFC women’s Flyweight queen Valentina Shevchenko.

After almost losing her women’s flyweight title at UFC 275, Valentina Shevchenko has assured future opponents that she remains unbeatable in the division.

Shevchenko came within a hair’s breadth of losing to Taila Santos this past weekend, only narrowly defending her title via split decision. The surging Brazilian prospect outgrappled Shevchenko for much of the fight, before the champ asserted her dominance in the later rounds.

The fight was the closest Shevchenko has come to tasting defeat as a flyweight. Since capturing the title from Joanna J?drzejczyk in 2018, the 34-year-old has made seven defenses, almost all of which have been heavily one-sided affairs.

The only fighter prior to Santos to trouble Shevchenko was Jennifer Maia, who managed to take the pound-for-pound queen down to the canvas and hold her there for an extended period.

Shevchenko Says Flyweights Shouldn’t Get Their Hopes Up

The image of Shevchenko locked in a body triangle while Taila Santos attempted to choke her out is not one that goes hand in hand with an unbeatable aura. Rather, it’s no doubt lessened her fear factor and inspired confidence in her fellow flyweights.

At the UFC 275 post-fight press conference, however, Valentina sent a clear message to all those who may be encouraged by her unconvincing performance.

“Maybe they think they can beat me, but they cannot,” said Shevchenko. “Even in a hard position, champion’s mindset is every time will be on top. And this is what I have. As I mentioned, being in martial arts for 30 years, it’s made me (a) hard opponent, very hard. So even (though) they think they can, but they cannot.”

Do you think Valentina Shevchenko has lost her fear factor after UFC 275?

Kamaru Usman

Most definitely going to bat for his client, Dominance MMA manager, Ali Abdelaziz has claimed that undisputed welterweight best and pound-for-pound number one, Kamaru Usman would defeat any combination of Jiri Prochazka, as well as former champions, Glover Teixeira, and Jan Blachowicz to become the light heavyweight champion.

Kamaru Usman draws Leon Edwards in a title rematch at UFC 278 in August

Usman, who has spent the entirety of his UFC run as a welterweight, is set to return to the Octagon in the main event of UFC 278 on August 20. in Salt Lake City – rematching the surging #2 ranked, Leon Edwards in a bid to land successful title defense number six.

The Auchi native had previously detailed how he had intended to eventually skip a middleweight division move and move all the way to 205lbs – with sights fixed on clashing with the aforenoted, Blachowicz, before his title loss to Teixeira.

However, off the back of Teixeira’s own championship defeat against Czech Republic finisher, Prochazka at UFC 275 last Saturday, Abdelaziz claims Usman would defeat any of the trio to land his second Octagon title.

“I just rewatched the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship (fight), I believe @USMAN84kg (Kamaru Usman) will beat Jiri (Prochazka), Jan (Blachowicz) and Glover (Teixeira),” Ali Abdelaziz tweeted. “Not trash talking, but this is real.”

In a follow-up post, Abdelaziz claimed that Usman was never supposed to achieve welterweight spoils, and because he has, it gives him solace that he can land light heavyweight helpings.

“He (Kamaru Usman) wasn’t supposed to be here and he’s the king now (sunglasses emoji) (Nigerian flag emoji),” Ali Abdelaziz tweeted.

During his run as undisputed welterweight champion, Usman has managed to land five successful defenses of the throne – handing a pair of losses to both Jorge Masvidal, and Colby Covington, as well as a knockout win over former Sanford MMA training partner, Gilbert Burns.

Glover Teixeira Believes Weight Cut Effected UFC 275 Performance: ‘I Was Vomiting’

Glover TeixeiraGlover Teixeira has speculated that an unusual weight cut and subsequent recovery may be to blame for his wilting in his UFC 275 headliner against Jiri Prochazka last weekend in Singapore – detailing how he had vomited following his cut to championship weight, and insisting that the recovery process was largely different from prior career […]

Glover Teixeira

Glover Teixeira has speculated that an unusual weight cut and subsequent recovery may be to blame for his wilting in his UFC 275 headliner against Jiri Prochazka last weekend in Singapore – detailing how he had vomited following his cut to championship weight, and insisting that the recovery process was largely different from prior career cuts.

Teixeira, a native of Minas Gerais, headlined UFC 275 at the Singapore Indoor Arena on Saturday against Czech challenger, Prochazka, suffering an undisputed light heavyweight title loss to the promotional perfect finisher, courtesy of a last round rear-naked choke.

Turning in a splendid performance against Prochazka during the majority of the five round back-and-forth, Teixeira ultimately fell victim to a rear-naked choke – without hooks, in the final seconds of the fifth round following a messy scramble.

Following the loss, Teixeira admitted that he had likely gassed during the final moments of the round and fight as a whole. And he now speculates that an unfamiliar recovery process, which included vomiting was partly to blame for his sudden cardio dump.

“Even though it was 9:30 at night (in Singapore), I cut the weight at 3:00 in the afternoon and stayed until 9:30 at night without drinking water, without anything,” Glover Teixeira told Brazilian outlet, Combate following UFC 275. “And then when I started to recover, I started to vomit, I started to vomit… I felt like vomiting. I couldn’t do the interview (with Megan Olivi) after the weigh-in and that got in the way, got in the way in the fifth round there.”

“I always talk to my students, ‘The weight cut will get in your way, if it’s a tough, five round fight, it will get in your way.’” Glover Teixeira said. “And it got in the way, I think that was it… I’ve never had a recovery like this.”

Whilst placing blame on his weight cut, Teixeira insisted that he was taking responsibility for his own defeat against Prochazka.

“The fight was brutal, I got tired, as I told you, I don’t want to blame my camp, I can do the fight again, and I can get tired again,” Glover Teixeira said. “… If I didn’t lose the weight right, he (Jiri Prochazka) did better than me, you know? If I didn’t lose the weight properly, it was my fault, that’s what I’m talking about, that I have to adjust, so it was totally my fault. I might be blaming it on the weight – I’m blaming the weight, but I’m taking responsibility for myself.”

Glover Teixeira campaigns for a title re-run against Jiri Prochazka

Despite his stoppage loss to newly-minted undisputed champion, Prochazka, Teixeira is adamant that he wants to share the Octagon with the Brno favorite in an immediate championship rematch next.

UFC strawweight Karolina Kowalkiewicz shared a heartfelt post on social media following Joanna J?drzejczyk’s retirement announcement.

Kowalkiewicz and J?drzejczyk were once bitter rivals in the strawweight division as the two Polish combatants squared off for the title at UFC 205. J?drzejczyk successfully defended her belt against Kowalkiewicz via a unanimous decision.

While J?drzejczyk and Kowalkiewicz had their fair share of bad blood ahead of their past UFC title fight, they’ve buried the hatchet in recent years. J?drzejczyk also helped train Kowalkiewicz for her last fight down at American Top Team in Florida.

J?drzejczyk’s UFC career came to a close this past weekend following a knockout loss to Zhang Weili at UFC 275. She announced her retirement in her post-fight interview and seems content with moving forward in life away from the Octagon.

In a recent Instagram post, Kowalkiewicz congratulated her fellow countrywoman on her success.

“I was number 2 practically for my entire sports career. It doesn’t bother me, on the contrary, I am proud of it, because you were and for me you will always be number 1,” Kowalkiewicz wrote of her former foe J?drzejczyk. “You are a legend. You wrote a beautiful and inspiring story. You are not only a great athlete who accomplished the impossible, but also a wonderful person. When our relationship was not the best, I needed help … I called you and although you did not have to help me, I could count on you.

“You are great not only in the octagon, but also in life. Now use it to the fullest. I wish you the best with all my heart.”

Despite J?drzejczyk’s fighting tenure concluding, she’s hinted at sticking around the sport for the foreseeable future. Following UFC 275, she hinted at pursuing a career in management and helping fighters move up in the sport’s hierarchy.

As for Kowalkiewicz, she recently snapped a five-fight losing skid with a win over Felice Herrig earlier this month. She’s picked up wins over the likes of Rose Namajunas, Randa Markos, and Jodie Esquibel during her career.

J?drzejczyk leaves the UFC as one of the greatest fighters in the promotion’s history, and at one point was thought of as one of the most dominant forces in the sport.

What are your thoughts on Karolina Kowalkiewicz’s message following Joanna J?drzejczyk’s retirement?
