Paulo Costa Corrupted

Love him or hate him, Paulo Costa is solidifying himself as one of MMA’s most controversial figures. From his most recent altercation where the young Brazilian allegedly elbowed a nurse over a vaccine card, to claiming the reason for his loss at UFC 253 was because the night before he drank too much wine, ‘Borrachina’ keeps landing himself in the headlines and let’s just say, it’s not for doing things that make himself look like a class act.

Before his fight at UFC 275, the former light heavyweight champion Glover Teixeira spoke his mind about his fellow Brazilian MMA fighter, Paulo Costa.

“I believe ‘Borrachina’ is too corrupted by Instagram and Youtube followers, maybe he wants attention to gain followers, like Jake Paul,” Teixeira told ESPN Brazil (transcribed by MMA Fighting).

Paulo Costa Gets Blasted By Glover Teixeira Ahead of UFC 275

“Honestly, look, he has more followers than me, right? Maybe that’s worth more money down the line, so who am I to talk? It that’s his goal, gain more followers and be the Kim Kardashian of Instagram, he’s on the right path,” Teixeira continued.

“Now, if his goal is to become champion, he has to leave the controversies aside and focus on training, diet, and what he wants… I’m not saying he’s right or wrong. If we’re talking about money and followers, he’s right. It’s not my goal to have followers. My goal was always to be the best fighter in the world. When I retire from fighting, I’ll delete all my social media and start over.”

Paulo Costa (13-2, 5-2 UFC) is preparing for one of his most legendary foes yet, Luke Rockhold. The fabled self-proclaimed Samurai Rockhold is coming back from a three-year layoff.

Costa has yet to comment on these insights from Glover Teixeira, but most likely he’s got bigger concerns. As he’s still dealing with the after-effects of the nurse situation and preparing for his previously mentioned fight with Rockhold, which is slated for UFC 278: a card to be headlined by reigning welterweight champion Kamaru Usman and Leon ‘Rocky’ Edwards.

What are your thoughts on what Glover Teixeira had to say about Paulo Costa?

Taila Santos Surgery

After an insane performance at UFC 275, it has been confirmed that Taila Santos will need surgery for a broken orbital bone she sustained during her fight with Valentina Shevchenko after an accidental clash of heads.

UFC 275 was a ridiculously great night of fights, but few fighters if any proved themselves more than Santos did in her fight with ‘The Bullet’. It was a combination of striking success and grappling domination, but one thing was for certain. Taila Santos was on fire.

However, the judges saw it differently and Valentina Shevchenko was awarded the decision victory after a full five rounds and 25-minutes of intensity. Santos was ushered to the hospital, where doctors discovered the broken bone and informed Santos and her team that surgery would in fact be inevitable.

Taila Santos Surgery Confirmed By Management, and What’s Next for the Flyweight Division?

Tiago Okamura, Santos’ manager, spoke to MMA Fighting about the situation:

“We had two options,” Okamura began. “To have surgery here, and God knows how long we’d have to stay how (long) the recovery would take, or wait two weeks for the swelling to reduce a little bit and then have the surgery.”

“The doctors said the long flight (back to Santos’ country of Brazil) would not be a problem, and we would have a better support (system) back home, since (Santos) would only stay with one person (in Singapore).”

Taila Santos (19-2, 4-2 UFC) gave the flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko more trouble than anybody has in recent memory. ‘The Bullet’ kept finding herself being taken down, and the Brazilian would find crafty ways to threaten submissions, take the back, and transition.

It was indeed the biggest challenge of Shevchenko’s career minus maybe the Amanda Nunes fights, but still, that is not bad company for Taila Santos’ name to be around.

What’s the Future of the Women’s UFC Flyweight Division?

So, what’s next for Valentina Shevchenko and the flyweight division? Well, it may be too soon to say. One thing that’s for certain is that Santos did look impressive enough to maybe even be worthy of an instant rematch. And if not, then things aren’t very open right now.

Top contenders in the top five have fights booked already. Katlyn Chookagian is #2 ranked in the world, but she’s already lost to Shevchenko and has a fight against #3 ranked Manon Fiorot scheduled.

The only fighter that’s ranked in the top ten and doesn’t have a match currently booked (who already hasn’t lost to ‘The Bullet’) is Casey O’Neil. She’s riding an insane four-fight win streak that includes a victory over the younger Shevchenko sister, Antonina. Who would you like to see face Valentina Shevchenko next, or should Taila Santos get an instant rematch?

Also, do you think the judges scored the fight wrong or did ‘The Bullet’ truly deserve the decision victory?

Joanna J?drzejczyk has picked Weili Zhang to get it done against Carla Esparza if the duo are to meet in a championship bout.

In a rematch of their highly memorable 2020 fight, J?drzejczyk lost to Zhang via KO at UFC 275 last night. The 34-year-old was overmatched by the Chinese fighter from the outset. Zhang took J?drzejczyk down multiple times in round one, landing a series of brutal elbows from on top. Then in the second round, Zhang unleashed a spinning backfist to knock Joanna out cold.

Having lost five of her last seven fights, J?drzejczyk took off her gloves and announced her retirement from MMA in her post-fight Octagon interview. The Pole ends her UFC run with a 10-5 record, having fought in the promotion since 2014.

J?drzejczyk Backs Weili Zhang To Defeat Carla Esparza

Having fought Zhang on two occasions and felt the raw power and athleticism of the 32-year-old, J?drzejczyk knows a thing or two about how good Zhang is.

When asked at the UFC 275 post-fight press conference who would get their hand raised in a potential fight between Zhang and strawweight champ Carla Esparza, Joanna answered without hesitation.

“First round for Weili Zhang,” said J?drzejczyk. “She’s so strong. Yeah, first round.”

Once a rival of Zhang, now seemingly an admirer, J?drzejczyk paid tribute to the Chinese fighter’s power and striking.

“She really surprised me with her strength (on the) ground,” said Joanna. “Because we know she’s a striker, but she was very strong on the ground. Very beautiful work. Very beautiful work.”

J?drzejczyk also has firsthand knowledge of what Esparza brings to the table, having defeated her in 2015 to win the title. That was, however, long before Esparza’s current six-fight win streak. But Joanna still feels Zhang will get it done if the duo are to meet soon.

“So it’s going to be an interesting fight, but I truly believe that Weili’s going to be becoming the champ,” said J?drzejczyk.

Do you think Joanna J?drzejczyk is right to pick Weili Zhang over Carla Esparza?

New UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Ji?í Procházka had words with Glover Teixeira, even while he was stuck in a vulnerable position.

The UFC 275 main event will go down as one of the greatest fights of all time and is without question on the shortlist of Fight of the Year frontrunners.

One of the reasons the fight was such an instant classic is because there was action from various positions, including on the mat. Going into the fight, the prevailing stylistic narrative was that it would be a grappler versus striker bout.

Though Procházka was able to ultimately cancel that narrative by picking up a stunning submission victory over Teixeira, the Brazilian was able to get off some effective ground-and-pound during the fight, at which point Procházka wanted to send a message to his opponent.

“Yeah, I talked with him,” Procházka revealed during the UFC 275 post-fight press conference. ” I said (to) him: ‘Very nice, very nice. But still nothing.’ I wanted to show him his ground and pound, he have no power to end me in that. But he have power enough to open me. [LAUGHS]

“That was very bad. That was very bad, and it was right after I started to smile (at) him. I started to smile, and then he opened my eyebrow. And I said (to) myself, ‘OK, it’s not time for fun anymore.’”

The fun and the talking are only just beginning for the Czech Republic, however, after now having its first UFC champion notched in the history books. There’s no doubt that Procházka will be all the rave nationwide after his monumental victory in the UFC 275 main event.

MMA News will keep you posted on what’s next for the new light heavyweight champion, so be sure to keep it locked right here for the latest updates!

With the UFC slowly making a return to hosting international events, the promotion is focused on reigniting plans of expanding to new markets.

Speaking at the UFC 275 post-fight press conference, UFC Senior Vice President, International and Content David Shaw discussed the UFC’s goal to return to a regular international schedule. Shaw mentioned pre-pandemic locations like Brazil and Australia as priorities, but also suggested new locales such as Thailand were on the UFC’s radar.

One highlight of the UFC’s week in Singapore was the Road to the UFC series, which showcased a number of Asian fighters ahead of UFC 275. Shaw was asked if the series might expand to other countries, which led into a question about the UFC’s future plans for Africa.

“When it comes to Africa, yeah, it’s a destination,” Shaw said. “You saw the NFL talking about some of the activations they’re gonna bring to (start there). We’ve got a few different destinations we’ve been working with, a few parties on to get a better understanding of what’s required to get an event there. But it’s still gonna be a late-2023 thing at the earliest, I believe.”

In addition to several African champions, the UFC roster includes fighters such as South Africa’s Dricus Du Plessis.

The Covid-19 pandemic greatly limited the UFC’s options for hosting events, and the promotion was limited to Florida, Las Vegas and Abu Dhabi for the first year after the pandemic began. Other locations in the U.S slowly followed, and they’ve only recently started going back to international destinations other than Abu Dhabi with cards in London and Singapore.

The UFC may not have made it to the continent yet, but three of the promotion’s current champions were born in Africa. Heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou is from Cameroon, while middleweight and welterweight champions Israel Adesanya and Kamaru Usman were both born in Nigeria.

The UFC’s roster includes a number of African fighters, and it’s notable that all three champions have expressed their desire to fight in Africa sooner rather than later.

What do you think of the UFC’s future plans for a card in Africa?
