Former UFC middleweight champion, Luke Rockhold is without a victory at 185lbs since a 2017 submission win over promotional veteran, David Branch, however, believes a UFC 278 win over Paulo Costa this weekend in Salt Lake City will punch his ticket to another title challenge in the division.

Rockhold, who is set to make his first Octagon appearance since a light heavyweight excursion back in July 2019, has been quite vocal with his thoughts on fighter pay in the organization recently, notably voicing his displeasure with the structure of payment as well as post-fight bonuses issued by the UFC.

The former UFC and Strikeforce middleweight champion was scheduled to return to the Octagon for the first time since his knockout loss to former titleholder, Jan Blachowicz back in November at UFC 268, however, a back injury forced him from a matchup with Sean Strickland.

Luke Rockhold believes a win over Paulo Costa lands him a title siege

Meeting Brazilian striker, Costa this weekend beneath a welterweight title rematch featuring champion, Kamaru Usman, and Leon Edwards, Rockhold claims he would fight for the middleweight title next should he defeat the Belo Horizonte native at the Vivint Arena.

“Next,” Luke Rockhold told Helen Yee when asked when he would compete for Octagon gold again. “I’m not going to do anything else. If I don’t get it, they don’t get it.”

Forever touted as a potential disrupter to the reign of middleweight champion, Israel Adesanya, Rockhold believes the City Kickboxing staple will need to keep his wits about him ahead of his UFC 281 title headliner with foe, Alex Pereira.

“It just depends on how Israel (Adesanya) fights,” Luke Rockhold said. “If Israel tries to fight him (Alex Pereira) – because he’s in his head. If he’s in his head and you let guys in your head – he lost to him in a close one and then he got clipped in the second one because he let him get in his head. He was in his head. He was in his head. You can see he was in his head. So if Israel let’s him get in his head this time around, that’s interesting.”

“Israel’s got to know how to check himself and he’s got to fight MMA,” Luke Rockhold explained. “We all know Alex Pereira sucks on the ground. Even Israel could probably f*cking put him away on the ground. The kid’s dangerous as hell on the feet, so it all depends on Israel, what his head space is and how he fights it.” (Transcribed by MMA Fighting)

Winning the undisputed middleweight championship back in December 2015, Rockhold defeated Chris Weidman before suffering a title loss to rival, Michael Bisping in a UFC 199 rematch the following June, suffering a shocking first round knockout defeat to the Manchester favorite.

Ahead of his upcoming UFC 278 co-headlining return later this month, Paulo Costa has cordially parted ways with manager, Wallid Ismail – following in the footsteps of his compatriot, Deiveson Figueriedo. And his partner, Tamara Alves, will now represent the Belo Horizonte native.

Costa, the current #6 ranked middleweight contender, is slated to co-headline UFC 278 in Salt Lake City, Utah later this month opposite former division champion, the returning, Luke Rockhold. The pay-per-view event will be headlined by a welterweight title rematch between Kamaru Usman, and Leon Edwards.

Last featuring in the main event of UFC Vegas 41 in October of last year, Paulo Costa suffered a unanimous decision loss to Marvin Vettori – in an impromptu light heavyweight clash.

The defeat came as just the second of Costa’s professional career, after the Brazilian unsuccessfully pried the middleweight title from Israel Adesanya in September 2020, suffering a second round knockout loss on ‘Fight Island’.

Paulo Costa’s most recent UFC win came in August 2019

Ahead of his return on August 20. against Rockhold, Costa confirmed he had amicably parted ways with Ismail for representation, with the aforenoted, Alves now handling Costa with immediate effect.

“I have nothing bad to say about Wallid (Ismail),” Paulo Costa said on his official YouTube channel. “He is an honest person and very professional. I just have compliments about him. We just have different views about my career and, because of that, we decided to not work together anymore.” (Transcribed by Sherdog)

11-2 as a professional, Costa began his Octagon tenure with a blistering run of five consecutive victories, besting Garreth McLellan, Oluwale Bamgbose, former welterweight champion, Johny Hendricks, the recently retired, Uriah Hall. And in his most recent professional win, defeated multiple-time middleweight title challenger and now-Bellator contender, Yoel Romero back in August 2019. The outing earned both Costa and Romero a Fight of the Night bonus.

Regarded as one of the best defensive wrestlers in the division and the entire organization today, former undisputed UFC featherweight champion, Jose Aldo – has been met with a wrestling challenge from opponent, Merab Dvalishvili ahead of UFC 278, who promises to take the Brazilian off his feet.

Aldo, the current #3 ranked bantamweight contender, is slated to return to the Octagon later this month against surging Georgian grappler, Dvalishvili – in a potential title-eliminator at 135lbs.

Undefeated in his last two Octagon appearances, Aldo has turned in back-to-back, vintage striking displays en route to a pair of dominant decisions wins over both Pedro Munhoz, as well as a December headlining win against Rob Font.

As for Dvalishvili, the streaking wrestling force has seen injuries hamper his recent activity inside the Octagon – with his most recent outing coming back in September where he landed his seventh straight win with a second round ground strikes win over common-foe, Marlon Moraes at UFC 266. The win earned Dvalishvili a post-fight Performance of the Night bonus.

Merab Dvalishvili promises to crack Jose Aldo’s takedown defense stature

Approaching the most high-profile matchup of his Octagon tenure to date, Dvalishvili remains confident that he can find a chink in the takedown defense armor of Aldo – who is revered as one of the promotion’s better defensive wrestlers.

“You guys will see, I’m gonna take him (Jose Aldo) down,” Merab Dvalishvili told The Schmo during a recent interview at Syndicate MMA. “You guys will see – my takedowns is different, I know he defends, he has the most – good defense, like wrestling takedown defense. You guys will see, I will take him down, I think more than three times.”

A victory for Dvalishvili would likely dislodge Aldo from his #3 perch in the division, as well as land the Georgian his eighth consecutive victory. However, given the fact his teammate – Aljamain Sterling, currently resides atop the bantamweight throne, Dvalishvili is not rushing a show at 135lbs spoils.

“Like I said, I don’t care about the title now,” Merab Dvalishvili explained. “I just wanna win against Jose Aldo, I have so much respect for him. And like, that’s all I want. I don’t care for a title shot, for now – especially at 135, like, my brother, Aljamain Sterling, he’s the king of this division.
