Sharing his thoughts on Li Jingliang’s run of bad luck over the course of UFC 279 fight week, event headliner, Nate Diaz revealed the promotion prevented him from sharing the Octagon with the Chinese striker – before praising his “dope” suit.

Diaz, who headlined UFC 279 last weekend, defeated former interim lightweight champion, Tony Ferguson with a fourth round guillotine choke, after his original opponent, Khamzat Chimaev was demoted to a co-main event slot with Kevin Holland amid a massive weight misss of seven and a half pounds.

Turning in his first victory since 2019, Diaz, who has now completed his contractual obligations with the promotion, confirmed his intentions to likely walk away from the UFC as he finds himself linked with a professional boxing tenure, before returning to the promotion.

Nate Diaz praises Li Jingliang’s handling of a topsy-turvy UFC 279 fight week

Landing Ferguson – who was initially scheduled to fight Jingliang, Diaz shared his thoughts on the welterweight contender’s close, split decision loss to fellow California veteran, Daniel Rodriguez, as well as complimenting his well-documented suit.

“They (the UFC) didn’t want to let me fight Chung Li (sic),” Nate Diaz said of Li Jingliang whilst speaking with assembled media. “That motherf*cker had the dopest suit in the press conference. You know what I was talking about, I didn’t mean to do that to him.”

“Did you guys see his (Jingliang) suit?” Nate Diaz continued. “I felt bad for him. They should have showed him love.’

Addressing his close, debated split judging loss to kickboxing talent, Rodriguez, Jingliang thanked the community and his followers for their support throughout a tumultuous fight week in ‘Sin City’.
“Huge thanks to everyone who supports me,” Li Jingliang posted on Instagram. “I felt a lot of love from you this week. You guys are who I am fighting for. I fight for my people, my family and my dream. I will keep walking on the path which I choose. Will never stop and take what belongs to me back. Congrats (Daniel Rodriguez), my friend.”

Following their back-and-forth, UFC 279 battle last weekend in Las Vegas, Nevada – former interim lightweight champion, Tony Ferguson has revealed he will take up an invitation from opponent, Nate Diaz to train with him and his elder brother, Nick Diaz in California.

Ferguson, who headlined UFC 279 in an impromptu welterweight main event fight on Saturday, suffered an eventual fourth round guillotine loss to the Stockton native, who completed his contractual obligations with the organization as a result.

Chopping away at Diaz’s lead leg with a series of both inside and outside leg kicks throughout the opening three rounds, Ferguson, who suffered both nasty lacerations to his left shin, as well as above his right eye, ultimately sealed his fate with a miscued takedown attempt.

Pressed to the Octagon fence, Ferguson, who had led the fight on one judge’s scorecards, attempted a takedown upon command from his corner, however, Diaz would pull guard and almost immediately set up a guillotine choke, forcing an eventual tap from the Oxnard veteran.

Tony Ferguson reveals Nate Diaz offered him a chance to train with him following UFC 279

Spending time in Albuquerque, New Mexico at Jackson-Wink MMA ahead of his welterweight return, Ferguson, who has now suffered consecutive losses to Justin Gaethje, Charles Oliveira, Beneil Dariush, Michael Chandler, and now, Diaz – revealed he would train alongside the Diaz brothers in California for some time.

“I got the invite to their (Nate Diaz and Nick Diaz) camp,” Tony Ferguson told assembled media following UFC 279. “I’m gonna be real with you – scoop (inaudible), I got my own camp which is awesome, but I’m not gonna say no to them. Those guys are pretty f*cking cool, I mean, we run California. We do a lot for this sport, as much as we would want to fight, we have to make things right for the UFC and the contracts and stuff.”

“I wish him (Nate) nothing but the best – him and Nick, and their whole, entire crew,” Tony Ferguson explained. “They’re tough, man – and it’s cool as sh*t to be a part of that, that vibe that’s right there. Like I said, ‘El Cucuy’ is a legend, I’m not going f*cking nowhere, man.”

“I don’t see any L’s, just growth” – Tony Ferguson on his harsh UFC 279 loss

Tony Fergsuon UFC 279 Nate Diaz

After a baffling and historical fight week for UFC 279, the smoke is settling. Originally slated to give us Khamzat Chimaev vs. Nate Diaz, a weight miss by ‘Borz’ would see Diaz, and none other than Tony Ferguson throw down in the cage for UFC 279’s main event.

The first round started off at a solid pace, with each fighter landing a few good shots as they felt each other out. A wild spinning elbow by Tony Ferguson was mere inches away from landing in devastating fashion the first minute of the bout, however, Diaz got out of harms way and the fight proceeded.

A big, gushing wound opened up on Ferguson’s shin soon after, but ‘El Cucuy‘ continued on undisturbed. The boxing of Diaz was in full effect, with ‘Mr. 209’ mixing in his patented combos of strange looping stockton slaps and hooks, and straight laser-like jabs and crosses.

As the rounds progressed, both fighters could be seen getting frustrated at one another’s odd fighting style. It was almost ironic that while the matchup of Diaz vs Ferguson was arguably more compelling and competitive than that of Diaz vs Chimaev, it was also harder to prepare for on such a short-notice.

Even with a full camp, solving the strange enigma that is the weird fighting styles of Diaz and Ferguson respectively would be no small task. So, it should not be surprising that the unconventional ways of both men threw each other off during the fight.

An end to an era, and Tony Ferguson’s post-fight presser: “Im still on top of the mountain”

Although his corner kept imploring him to go for a takedown, it would actually spell doom for ‘El Cucuy’. In the fourth round he’d be caught in a guillotine choke, and inevitably tap. It was the end of an era for Nate Diaz, and for Tony Ferguson, it would go down as his fifth consecutive loss in a row.

At the UFC’s post-fight press conference, Tony Ferguson would address the losing streak:

“Im still at the top of the mountain,” he began. “Are you glad sports are back on in the world? Well say thank you then. You’re fu*king welcome.

“When it comes down to an L (a loss),” Ferguson continued. “It has to go into whats been put on the table (fights offered). Putting sports back on in the world, setting an example for these youngsters to not quit. To go in there and not give a sh*t and take the next fight that’s on the wind.”

“Im gonna be real, I don’t see any L’s, I just see growth. The last four fights that I had before this one, I’m gonna be real, I was sandbagging. I wasn’t really doing anything. My wife called me out. I found a good team, the most motley crew of people we could’ve put together and we made some noise.

What’s next for Tony Ferguson?
