According to UFC color commentator and former two-weight champion, Daniel Cormier, upwards of $1 million was forked out for the camp of newly minted undisputed lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev to prepare for his UFC 280 clash with Charles Oliveira over the weekend.

Headlining UFC 280 in a return to Abu Dhabi, UAE – Makhachev competed with his fellow surging contender, former undisputed titleholder, Oliveira for vacant 155lbs gold.

Landing a series of takedowns in the opening round, Makhachev managed to score a rather heavy knockdown on the Brazilian midway through the second, countering a front kick attempt with a left hand and a right hook, flattening the Sao Paulo favorite.

Immediately following the dangerous grappler, Oliveira to the canvas, Makhachev sought out an arm-triangle choke, before moving to side control with aplomb, forcing a tap to secure American Kickboxing Academy its second UFC lightweight crown after the coronation of his teammate, Khabib Nurmagomedov back in 2018.

Islam Makhachev saw upwards of $1,000,000 pumped into his UFC 280 camp

Providing some insight into the training methods and profile of Islam Makhachev’s camp ahead of his ‘Fight Island’ showdown with Oliveira, the aforenoted, Cormier confirmed that upwards of a $1 million was spent in order to prepare Makhachev for his premier title siege under the UFC banner.

Following his title victory, Makhachev was joined in the Octagon by undisputed promotional featherweight champion, Alexander Volkanovski – who appears poised to welcome the Dagestan native to his native Australia in February of next year at UFC 284 as he attempts to become a two-division champion.

Set to return to camp in just over two weeks’ time under the tutelage of close friend and compatriot, Nurmagomedov, Islam Makhachev extends his stunning undefeated streak to 11 straight fights with his submission win over Oliveira – in turn snapping the Brazilian division-best unbeaten run. The submission win also came as Makhachev’s eleventh since his 2010 career birth.

UFC president, Dana White has confirmed that former two-weight promotional champion, Conor McGregor will have to return to the USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency) testing pool for a period of 6 months before he will be eligible to compete under the organizational banner again.

McGregor, a former undisputed lightweight and featherweight champion, competed most recently at UFC 264 back in July of last year, suffering a first round doctor’s stoppage TKO loss against Dustin Poirier after he fractured his left tibia and fibula.

Reports emerged recently detailing how McGregor, 34, had yet to be tested by the anti-doping agency since the final quarter of last year, leading to speculation that the Dubliner had left the agency’s testing pool.

An athlete undergoing anti-doping testing within the USADA testing pool would only be exempt from testing if they formally informed the UFC of their decision to retire in writing, or their contract with the organization had been officially terminated.

Conor McGregor must complete 6 months in the USADA testing pool before a UFC comeback

Commenting on McGregor’s potential Octagon return in 2023, after the Crumlin native confirmed how he intends to fight at the welterweight limit next, the above-mentioned, White confirmed how the 34-year-old would need to complete a period of 6 months in the USADA testing pool before his next UFC outing.

“Yeah,” Dana White told MMA Junkie reporter, Farah Hannoun, when she questioned if Conor McGregor would need to appear in the USADA testing pool for 6 months before an Octagon comeback. “Right.”

The former duel-weight champion is currently riding a two-fight losing skid with a pair of stoppage losses to Poirier coming last year.

Conor McGregor’s most recent professional victory came in the form of a first round knockout win over the now-retired Donald Cerrone back in January 2020 at the welterweight limit.

McGregor is currently filming footage for the upcoming release of action movie, Roadhouse in the Dominican Republic, where he will feature in a lead role alongside Jake Gyllenhaal.

After pure chaos in the UFC 280 main event, Islam Makhachev has emerged as the victor. However, in classic fashion, Conor McGregor wasn’t very impressed after the win and took to Twitter to claim that he’s finally refined the style needed to defeat Makhachev’s.

The battle between former champion Charles Oliveira and the young Dagestani fighter was intense. The two fighters were both on incredible win streaks of 10 victories or more, and fans everywhere were split on who’d walk away victorious.

The first round was an interesting affair, as Oliveira quickly pulled guard early into the round. From there, mad scrambles and transitions would occur, with ‘Do Bronx’ attempting to threaten with submissions or get back to his feet. Makhachev was decidedly focused on control and was obviously looking to put Oliveira in a position where Makhachev could enact his will.

Eventually, time in the first expired, and both men went back to their corners. The second round kicked off and featured some wild standup, with both men landing vicious blows. However, Oliveira would attempt a flying knee and leave himself exposed to a bomb of a right hook by Makhachev. This sent the Brazilian crashing to the canvas, and the Dagestani nightmare quickly jumped on a head-and-arm choke to seal the deal and force the tap.

It was a momentous win for Islam Makhachev, who has been battling expectations his entire career due to following in the footsteps of his best friend Khabib Nurmagomedov, the legend himself. Conor McGregor, however, wasn’t very impressed. Taking to Twitter, the Irishman would reveal that he’s allegedly cracked the DaVinci code of MMA so to speak.

Conor McGregor proclaims he’s figured out how to beat Islam Makhachev

In a series of now-deleted tweets, McGregor would start off by saying that he’s “developed the tools” to defeat the ruthless Dagestani style that fighters like Nurmagomedov and Makhachev employ.

“I have the system to hurt this style of fighting guys,” Conor McGregor would insist. “I am telling you. Bro is a sh*t jocks. Fat mouth shut your mouth you done nothing tonight except go against fathers wishes and run. It’s not father’s plan completed yet, pal. You know. Your people know and they talk about you.”

Maybe sensing that he’d gone too far by bringing up Khabib Nurmagomedov’s deceased father (who was also Islam Makhachev’s coach), the tweets would soon be deleted by the Irish superstar.

Do you think Conor McGregor went too far with his recent callout of Islam Makhachev?
