Ahead of this month’s massive vacant lightweight title fight at UFC 280 in the Middle East, former division titleholder, Conor McGregor has picked former champion, Charles Oliveira to “easily” defeat the surging, Islam Makhachev and reclaim his belt.
McGregor, the current #11 ranked lightweight contender, faces the challenge of snapping a two-fight losing skid for the first time in his professional mixed martial arts career when he returns to the UFC next year, having most recently competed in July of last year.
Headlining UFC 264 against former interim titleholder, Dustin Poirier in a trilogy rubber match following a prior January knockout loss to the Lafayette native, McGregor fractured his left tibia and fibula in the opening round – resulting in a doctor’s stoppage TKO defeat.
Conor McGregor backs Charles Oliveira to win the lightweight title at UFC 280
Linked with a future fight against former undisputed champion, Oliveira in the future, McGregor has, however, picked the Sao Paulo native to defeat Makhachev with relative ease in Abu Dhabi, UAE later this month.
“Olly (sic) (Charles Oliveira) and easily,” Conor McGregor replied to a Twitter user who asked for his pick in the UFC 280 main event in a #AskNotorious session.
While picking Oliveira to prevail with championship in tow at UFC 280, McGregor, who holds victories over the Brazilian’s countrymen, Jose Aldo, and Diego Brandao in the UFC, believes he would stop Oliveira as well.
“I’ve KO’d every Brazilian I’ve fought,” Conor McGregor tweeted. “I KO Charles (Oliveira) too.”
Without a victory since January 2020, McGregor stopped Donald Cerrone with a first round 40-second TKO win at the welterweight limit in the main event of UFC 246 in his most recent win.
As for Oliveira, the Brazilian stopped former interim titleholder Justin Gaethje at UFC 274 back in May with a first round rear-naked choke. Oliveira was, however, stripped of the lightweight title after missing weight for the clash.
Ahead of his upcoming UFC 280 co-main event slot against former two-time bantamweight champion, T.J. Ahead of his upcoming UFC 280 co-main event slot against former two-time bantamweight champion, T.J. Dillashaw, defending division kingpin, Aljamain Sterling has claimed he can “guarantee” that the Angels Camp veteran is somehow utilizing a doctor or potentially microdosing, in order to gain an unfair advantage in their upcoming fight.
Sterling, the current undisputed bantamweight champion, is scheduled to co-headline UFC 280 later this month in Abu Dhabi, UAE against Californian veteran, Dillashaw – attempting to secure his second successful title defense at 135lbs after he scored a rematch title unification win against Petr Yan later this month.
As for Dillashaw, the former two-time bantamweight champion made a triumphant Octagon return in July of last year against recent winner, Cory Sandhagen, defeating the common-foe with a close, split decision judging.
The outing came as Dillashaw’s first since January 2019, where he suffered a first round knockout loss to former flyweight champion, Henry Cejudo.
However, in the weeks following Dillashaw’s loss, he was notified by USADA of a potential anti-doping violation, after he returned both in and out-of-competition test samples positive for the presence of erythropoietin (EPO).
Dillashaw was issued a two-year retroactive suspension for his infringement, and subsequently relinquished his undisputed bantamweight championship.
Aljamain Sterling remains spectacle of T.J. Dillashaw ability to refrain from utilizing PEDs
Yet to return a positive test for a banned substance since, Dillashaw is set to share the Octagon with Sterling on ‘Fight Island’ – however, the champion, Aljamain Sterling, remains unsure if the former has refrained from seeking an athletic and competitive advantage.
“If I had to make a prediction, I would say there’s definitely no doubt in my mind that that guy’s (T.J. Dillashaw) is finding some type of doctor or little microdosing or whatever, however that sh*t works,” Aljamain Sterling told Submission Radio during a recent interview. “I guarantee you he’s finding some type of way to get an edge once again, as he’s done his entire UFC career.”
“So, I already made peace with it,” Aljamain Sterling said. “So, at the end of the day, it is what it is. Like, I made the acknowledgement that I’m gonna step into thee with this guy, knowing that there’s a high chance of this happening. And it is what it is, man. I feel like this is not gonna be the first guy I fought that’s been on some supps (supplements), some extra supps. So, I think my hard work and skillset is enough to get the job done before, and I think it can get the job done again.” (Transcribed by MMA Mania)

Alireza Noei has claimed that his student Charles Oliveira will face a tougher test in Islam Makhachev, who he says possesses a better wrestling ability than former UFC lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov.
UFC 280 is in contention to be one of if not the best event of this year. Stacked from bottom to top the main event will see two dominant competitors compete for the currently vacant UFC lightweight title. Charles Oliveira will have the chance to regain his lightweight title when he takes on the man who many predicted to be the next champion following Khabib, Islam Makhachev.
Ahead of their highly anticipated matchup, Alireza Noei, coach of Charles Oliveira has claimed that his students’ next opponent is a better wrestler than the aforementioned Nurmagomedov.
Charles Oliveira’s coach believes Islam Makhachev is a better wrestler than Khabib
Speaking in an interview with PVT, Noei has stated his belief that Makhachev is a better wrestler than Khabib given that it is not the former undefeated champion’s first discipline.
“Let’s begin with the wrestling of Dagestan, Russian wrestling, 80% of wrestling of Russia comes from there. The Japanese wrestling that is called judo is also, you can ask the Judokas, Dagestan has really good Judokas,” Noei said.
“World champions, Olympic champions, just like the wrestlers. Everyone from Dagestan knows wrestling. For example here in Brazil almost half of the people know wrestling but in Dagestan, almost 100% know it, girls, women, men, everyone knows it. Even someone that doesn’t fight knows wrestling at least knows two or three wrestling coaches. Dagestan is a pool of wrestling.
Charles‘s adversary Islam Makhachev is very good at wrestling. I think even better than Khabib who is another athlete from Dagestan. He is better, certainly, of course, because he is a wrestler Khabib isn’t. Khabib is a Sambo fighter Islam has also done Sambo but he is a wrestler first and then a Sambo fighter and then an MMA fighter.” (Transcribed by MiddleEasy)
There is not long left to wait now with UFC 280 less than a month away. Will Islam Makhachev fulfill his full potential and follow on in Khabib’s legacy or will Charles Oliveira make good on his word and regain his spot at the top of the division?
Who will emerge victorious in the main event of UFC 280?
