Alexander Volkanovski

Undisputed UFC featherweight champion, Alexander Volkanovski believes his stature – particularly his “little legs” will benefit him in a potential, expected fight against newly minted undisputed lightweight titleholder, Islam Makhachev at UFC 284 next February.

Expected to make a lightweight division move next February in a Perth, Australia homecoming, Volkanovski most recently co-headlined UFC 277 back in July during International Fight Week, turning in a third career win against former kingpin, Max Holloway in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Weighing in as a backup to last weekend’s clash between Charles Oliveira, and Makhachev – Volkanovski confronted newly crowned champion, Makhachev in the Octagon post-UFC 280 at the Eithad Arena, with the duo expected to fight in a championship setting at the RAC Arena in February next year at UFC 284

And despite Makhachev’s dominant wrestling and grappling prowess, Volkanovski believes his stature will stand to him in the potential fight – touting his ability to successfully defend takedowns, and even return to his feet in a timely fashion if he’s put on the canvas.

“I’m very, very hard to not only take down, but hold down,” Alexander Volkanovski told MMA Junkie during a recent interview. “… Especially these little short legs, they’re very easy to get back to my feet. That’s going to be one hard thing.”

“Getting me down is going to be a problem,” Alexander Volkanovski continued. “If you do, I’m bouncing right back up and it’s going to be standup most of the way through. That’s how I see it.”

Successfully defending his undisputed featherweight championship on fourth separate occasions, Volkanovski managed to secure victories over the aforenoted, Holloway twice, as well as defeating Brian Ortega in a unanimous decision effort – before finishing the veteran, Chan Sung Jung with strikes back in April atop the UFC 273 card.

As well as the promotion’s interest in booking a lightweight title fight between Makhachev and Volkanovski, the UFC are keen on landing an undisputed bantamweight title fight between Aljamain Sterling and former two-weight champion, the returning, Henry Cejudo on the same UFC 284 card.

Beneil Dariush

Off the back of another hugely impressive victory in his Octagon return at UFC 280 over the course of last weekend, Iran-born lightweight contender, Beneil Dariush has noted his intentions to secure a title eliminator against former division champion, Charles Oliveira at UFC 284 in February of next year.

Returning to the Octagon for the first time since May of last year on ‘Fight Island’ last Saturday night, Dariush, a staple of Kings MMA, defeated former duel-weight KSW champion, Mateusz Gamrot with an impressive unanimous decision win.

Dropping Gamrot with a massive overhand shot in the third round of their main card fight, Dariush won the striking and grappling exchanges against the Polish contender in Abu Dhabi, UAE – as well as displaying formidable takedown defense as well as winning scrambles on cue.

As for Oliveira, the Sao Paulo fan favorite saw his division-best 12-fight winning spree halted in the night’s headliner against Islam Makhachev, dropping a second round arm-triangle submission loss in the duo’s vacant lightweight title battle.

Beneil Dariush remains interested in a fight against Charles Oliveira

Expressing his interest in a timely route back to title contention, Oliveira’s plans appear to be welcomed by the aforenoted, Dariush, who earmarked a February return at UFC 284 in Perth, Australia – suggesting a fight with the Brazilian.

“Charles (Oliveira) would be great, but is Charles gonna be ready?” Beneil Dariush said during an interview with Submission Radio. “Because is he gonna be in a mindset of where he wants to fight again? If no, Charles, like, I’ll be honest with you, I don’t think the top five are really interested.”

“If Dustin Poirier or Michael Chandler, if one of them wins, I don’t think they’ll want to face me,” Beneil Dariush explained. “Rafael Fiziev – however you say his last name. He’s good, man, I like that fight too. But, yeah, we’ll see. I don’t hate that fight. Ideally, Charles would be better. I was talking to my wife about it, I’m kind of excited for it. I’d love to go to Australia too and do it there.”

Islam Makhachev

Newly minted undisputed UFC lightweight titleholder, Islam Makhachev has opened as quite the impressive betting favorite ahead of undisputed featherweight champion, Alexander Volkanovski ahead of a potential February showdown in Perth, Australia – off the back of a massive UFC 280 event.

Headlining last night’s return to the Middle East for the organization, Islam Makhachev, under the tutelage of former champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov, delivered American Kickboxing Academy another UFC championship – submitting former titleholder, Charles Oliveira with a second round arm-triangle.

Exacting a quite dominant display against the Sao Paulo finisher, Islam Makhachev got Oliveira’s attention on the feet early, stinging with a left hand, before taking position in top control as the Brazilian pulled guard.

Remaining on the ground for the remainder of the frame following a perfectly executed trip, Makhachev dropped Oliveira heavily in the pocket during a second round exchange, before working his way to side control – and synching up an arm-triangle finish, landed the lightweight crown.

Lofted into the Etihad Arena sky by teammate, Khabib, Makhachev was then joined in the Octagon by Australian favorite, Volkanovski.

Weighing in earlier during fight week as an official backup for Saturday’s vacant lightweight title fight – Volkanovski, the current pound-for-pound #1 ranked fighter in the UFC, is poised to challenge Islam Makhachev for gold at UFC 284 in a Down Under homecoming next February.

Islam Makhachev opens as betting favorite over Alexander Volkanovski

And according to numerous opening odds, Makhachev has opened as a quite decent -400 betting favorite to defeat Volkanovski, who opens as a +300 underdog, and defend his lightweight championship. You can place a bet or wager on Islam Makhachev’s potential title outing against Volkanovski over at Fuksiarz

For Volkanovski, the dominant featherweight titleholder recently underwent a surgical procedure to address a hand fracture suffered in a one-sided title trilogy win over Max Holloway at UFC 277 back in July during International Fight Week.

The title win over Holloway came as the third occasion Volkanovski successfully defended his featherweight summit, however, the Aussie has stressed his interest in chasing duel-weight titleholder status in the form of a clash with either Oliveira or Makhachev next.

Sharing the Octagon last night in Abu Dhabi, UAE for a brief, yet cordial face-off, the duo, while yet to be officially booked, the duo are expected to draw each other in February of next year in Australia – as Volkanovski looks to earn a second UFC title.

As far as the chasing pack at lightweight, should Makhachev defeat Volkanovski and continue his new reign atop the division stack, the Dagestan native has yet to fight any top contender beyond Oliveira en route to his title win.

The Makhachkala-born sambo ace has been tipped to face the likes of Justin Gaethje, Dustin Poirier, Michael Chandler, Rafael Fiziev, Beneil Dariush, Mateusz Gamrot, and even land a rematch with Arman Tsarukyan during his prime in the division.

Makhachev also became the target of a slew of deleted tweets from former two-weight champion, Conor McGregor following his UFC 280 win – who poked fun at former coach, the late Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov and “father’s plan”, having shared a high-profile rivalry with former champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov in the past.
