Widely tipped to attempt his first defense of the undisputed UFC lightweight title in February of next year at UFC 284, Islam Makhachev appears eager to get the ball rolling on a superfight against his featherweight champion counterpart, Alexander Volkanovski – maintaining he will put pen to paper the second he’s issued a contract.

Makhachev, the newly minted undisputed lightweight champion, headlined UFC 280 earlier this month against former undisputed titleholder, Charles Oliveira in Abu Dhabi, UAE – submitting the Brazilian with a one-sided second round arm-triangle.

Immediately following the clash, Islam Makhachev was joined in the Octagon by featherweight kingpin, Volkanovski – setting up a champion versus champion clash next year, after the latter had weighed in as backup for UFC 280.

Islam Makhachev calls for contract to fight Alexander Volkanovski

Linked with a February date at UFC 284 in Perth, Australia – the duo have shared words back and forth since their interaction in the Middle East. And Makhachev has now warned Volkanovski to enjoy his spot upon the top of the promotion’s pound-for-pound list, albeit for the time being.

“The second I receive the paper, I will sign it, don’t worry (pencil emoji),” Islam Makhachev tweeted. “Enjoy your P4P first spot for now (winking face emoji).”

Makhachev’s tweet comes as a reply to Volkanovski, with the New South Wales technician questioning if he was still interested in a fight against him next year.

“Are you a man of you word?” Alexander Volkanovski tweeted. “@MAKHACHEVMMA? Let’s make it happen! (signing hand emoji) #UFC284.”

Recovering from a hand injury suffered at UFC 276 back in July during International Fight Week, Volkanovski lastly turned in a unanimous decision effort against former champion, Max Holloway – recording a trilogy shutout of wins over the Hawaii favorite.

Makhachev’s victory over Oliveira earlier this month also improved his undefeated run to a staggering 11 straight fights, as well as earning himself the #3 rank in the official pound-for-pound standings.

One-time UFC middleweight title challenger, Paulo Costa has teased an impending move to the squared circle, labelling his current contract with the Dana White-led organization, as “miserable” claiming it will “expire in time”.

Costa, the current #6 ranked middleweight contender, is currently scheduled to feature at UFC 284 in February next year in Perth, Australia – tangling with former undisputed middleweight champion, Robert Whittaker in a main card fight.

Last time out, the Belo Horizonte native made his return to the middleweight limit following an impromptu fight at light heavyweight, defeating former champion, Luke Rockhold in a unanimous decision victory at UFC 278 back in August.

Paulo Costa teases an impending move to boxing

Teasing a move to boxing in the near future, Paulo Costa claimed his “miserable” contract with the UFC will “expire in time” – with the Brazilian voicing his displeasure with how much fighters on the promotion’s roster were earning compared to YouTuber and recent winner, Jake Paul.

“My miserable contract with the UFC was up in a few short months,” Paulo Costa tweeted. “Will expire in time. A new #boxer is coming to town! (raised hands emoji)”

14-2 as a professional, Costa, an Ultimate Fighter alum and former Jungle Fight middleweight champion, has suffered middleweight defeats to both Marvin Vettori, and in his first professional loss, dropped a second round knockout loss to division champion, Israel Adesanya.

Amongst his list of other UFC victories, the Brazilian has defeated former welterweight champion, Johny Hendricks, as well as the recently retired, Uriah Hall – and perennial middleweight contender, Yoel Romero to name a few.

Revealing post-UFC 278 how he retained just a single fight on his current Octagon deal, Costa also claimed he earned in the region of $35,000 for his light heavyweight main event with Vettori in August of last year, after he missed the middleweight limit – forcing an impromptu 205lbs headliner. Costa also expressed his excitement at the thought of becoming a free agent following the booking of his final contracted fight.

Henry Cejudo

Former duel-weight UFC champion, Henry Cejudo appears poised to snap a retirement of over two years in a stunning bantamweight title return in February at UFC 284, however, has called for the UFC to introduce an interim title to the fray if undisputed champion, Aljamain Sterling rejects a potential clash.

Cejudo, a former undisputed bantamweight and flyweight champion during his tenure with the UFC, successfully defended his bantamweight crown in a May 2020 knockout win over former division titleholder, Dominick Cruz, before retiring from active competition with immediate effet.

In his sole successful flyweight title knockback in January the year prior atop a UFC Fight Night Brooklyn card, Cejudo defeated then-bantamweight best, T.J. Dillashaw with a blistering first round knockout, dispatching the Angels Camp veteran in less than 40 seconds.

Following the aforenoted, Sterling’s title defense against Dillashaw earlier this month at UFC 280, the Uniondale native was all but tied to a title outing against the returning, Cejudo next, with reports detailing how the UFC are eying a Perth, Australia showdown between the two in February.

Henry Cejudo weighs up a fight with Sean O’Malley in February

However, Sterling has since distanced himself from a fight with Henry Cejudo – while the latter switches his focus to UFC 280 big-winner and the #1 ranked, Sean O’Malley – branding him with a peculiar nickname.

“Hey @danawhite since Denzel Sterling (Aljamain Sterling) wants to work on his rap career (he can be called Lil’ Power) How about me vs. Ronald MethDonald @SugaSeanMMA (Sean O’Malley) for an interim [title] in Australia?” Henry Cejudo tweeted. “I’m short so I’m used to being Down Under. (Trophy emoji)”

In the midst of a run of four fights without defeat, Montana native, O’Malley turned in a career-best win earlier this month at UFC 280, defeating former undisputed bantamweight champion, Petr Yan in a close decision win in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Expected to share the Octagon at UFC 284 next February in Perth, Australia – reigning featherweight champion, Alexander Volkanovski, and newly minted lightweight titleholder, Islam Makhachev are widely touted to compete for the summit of the promotion’s pound-for-pound rankings.

Clinching the undisputed lightweight crown last weekend at UFC 280 in Abu Dhabi, UAE, Makhachev managed to land a second round submission win over former undisputed division best, Charles Oliveira, dispatching the Brazilian with a taut arm-triangle submission success.

For Volkanovski, the New South Wales favorite entered the Octagon following the former’s submission win, setting up a February clash in his home land,  in a champion versus champion outing.

Scoring a quartet of successful title defenses a division lower at featherweight, Alexander Volkanovski defeated former champion, Max Holloway two times as champion, as well as knocking back both Brian Ortega, and South Korean veteran, Chan Sung Jung.

Alexander Volkanovski expects Islam Makhachev to wilt in UFC 284 clash

Touting his own takedown defense and ability to return to his feet if he does end up on the canvas against the revered grappler, Makhachev, Volkanovski claimed that he was excited to see how demoralized the Dagestan native would become if he was unable to land a series of takedowns.

“I feel like he’s (Islam Makhahcev) sort of underestimating me in a sense,” Alexander Volkanovski said during an interview with Submission Radio. “Where I’m just a featherweight, a small featherweight, how am I gonna be able to handle his strength? You know what I mean? That’s how he’s looking at it. Which is gonna be a shock when we are in that Octagon.”

“…Then when he tries to grab a hold of me, realizes, ‘Oh, sh*t, this short guy isn’t as weak as I thought, struggles to get me down.” Alexander Volkanovski explained. “Or even if he does get me down, I get straight back up. Mentally, he’s breaking. This stuff’s gonna get to him, cause this is not what he expected. He’s like, how is this little fella doing this? And I guarantee you I will. So, let’s see how he deals with that. … That’s the question that I wanna know. I want to see how easily he breaks when things don’t go to plan.”

In his most recent Octagon walk, Volkanovski turned in a third career win over the aforementioned Hawaii favorite, Holloway – besting the former titleholder over the course of five rounds in the co-main event of UFC 277 back in July during International Fight Week.
