Aljamain Sterling

With Aljamain Sterling’s successful defense of the UFC bantamweight championship on Saturday night, the stage has been set for a clash between the ‘Funk Master’ and colorful fan-favorite ‘Sugar’ Sean O’Malley.

Sterling once again walked away with a win by the skin of his teeth, securing a debatable split decision victory over returning Olympic gold medalist Henry Cejudo at UFC 288. Following the announcement, Sterling was joined by Joe Rogan who then welcomed Sean O’Malley into the cage. Stepping into the Octagon for a face off, the two men took a series of profanity-laced digs at one another that had the entire Prudential Center enthralled.

Things nearly got out of hand as Merab Dvalishvili, who was in Aljamain Sterling’s corner for his title defense, put on O’Malley’s jacket. The men were quickly separated and O’Malley exited the cage with his Michael Jackson cosplay piece intact as Sterling turned his attention toward the hostile New Jersey crowd.

Aljamain Sterling and Sean O’Malley Agree on a Scrap in September

September appears to be the favored date for their inevitable bantamweight title fight. That would likely be UFC 293, an event that has no official fights scheduled or announced at this time.

Sean O’Malley earned his spot as the No. 2 ranked contender in the division with a highly-contestable split decision win over former 135-pound champion Petr Yan at UFC 280 last October. O’Malley will go into the bout on a four-fight win streak and a winner in six of his last seven. Meanwhile, Aljamain Sterling has scored nine-straight wins dating back to 2018, making him one of, if not the greatest bantamweight in UFC history.

Making history tonight in the main event of UFC 288 in Newark, New Jersey — Aljamain Sterling becomes the first bantamweight champion in Octagon history to successfully defend his title on three occasions, landing a split decision (48-47, 47-48, 48-47) victory over challenger, Henry Cejudo.

Headlining UFC 288 at the Prudential Center, Sterling managed to add to prior successful title defences against former champions, Petr Yan, and common-foe, T.J. Dillashaw last year in tonight’s victory over Cejudo — narrowly edging out the Los Angeles-born contender over the course of five hard-fought rounds.

Avoiding considerable periods on the canvas following numerous takedowns from Olympic gold medalist, Cejudo, Uniondale native and Serra-Longo Fight Team staple, Sterling managed to turn in an impressive display on the feet over the course of five rounds before landing a close, split decision triumph to retain his crown.

And in the immediate aftermath of his main event victory, Sterling was joined in the Octagon by surging #2 ranked contender, Sean O’Malley — with the duo agreeing to fight next, with the champion suggesting a September showdown later this year.

Kron Gracie

On Saturday night, Kron Gracie made his first appearance inside the Octagon at UFC 288. Looking to score his first win in the UFC banner, Gracie was matched up with Canadian standout Charles Jourdain.

Gracie came out with a predictable game plan; get the fight to the ground. That turned out to be much more difficult than expected for the Brazilian submission machine. As Gracie plodded forward looking to close the distance, Jourdain regularly lit him up with a series of solid strikes, targeting the head and body equally.

However, Gracie was able to routinely close the distance, opting to pull guard instead of searching for a takedown. Once he had Jourdain in his guard, Gracie offered little offense, simply content to hold position. Each time he was taken down to the mat, Jourdain was eventually able to work his way back up where he continued to dominate on the feet. After three rounds of fairly uneventful action, we went to the judges for a decision.

Official Result: Charles Jourdain def. Kron Gracie via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Drew Dober

Looking for his fourth-straight finish, Drew Dober returned to the Octagon on Saturday night at UFC 288 for a lightweight scrap with Matt ‘The Steamrolla’ Frevola. Scoring knockouts in his last three outings, Dober was determined to add another highlight-reel finish to his already impressive resume as he continues his climb up the 155-pound rankings.

Both men immediately came out firing on all cylinders with Frevola targeting Dober’s body with a series of stiff body kicks. Dober began to bring the pressure, landing his signature left hand repeatedly. As they moved into the final minute of the first round, Dober ripped to the body of Frevola and ‘Steamrolla’ fired back with a nasty right hand that sent Dober crashing to the canvas.

Frevola, smelling blood in the water, jumped on his opponent and delivered a series of solid strikes on the ground forcing Herb Dean to step in and call for the stoppage with less than a minute to go in the round.

Official Result: Matt Frevola def. Drew Dober via TKO (strikes) at 4:08 of Round 1

Sean O'Malley urges Henry Cejudo to win at UFC 288 please win so i can beat the f*ck out of you

Sean O’Malley has made it very clear who he wishes to win this weekend, pleading with Triple C Henry Cejudo to beat current champion, Aljamain Sterling in tonight’s UFC 288 headliner.

With the bantamweight fight between Cejudo and Sterling rapidly approaching, it’s no surprise the man who could be in next for a title shot makes his opinion heard on who he wishes to win. Having had back and forth with both fighters in the past, O’Malley has clearly stated he wants Cejudo next.

Henry Cejudo returns to action after announcing his retirement in 2020 when he took on Bantamweight great, Dominick Cruz. Since that time he has spent the majority coaching fighters from UFC to the regional level indicating he has picked up a wealth of knowledge in that time that will show major benefit in his upcoming fight just hours away.

Calling for his shot at bantamweight spoils next, number two ranked contender, O’Malley urged Cejudo to win so they can share the Octagon with each other.

“Henry (Cejudo) please win so i can beat the f*ck out of you,” Sean O’Malley tweeted.

Aljamain Sterling has had a weird time as champion winning the belt off of a controversial illegal knee, defending it in a close decision then fighting an injured TJ Dillashaw where many fans have disrespected the Jamaican champion as a result. But with a clear-cut win over Cejudo it would be very hard to take anything away from Sterling who will then of defended his title three times against three different former champions and arguably the division’s greatest of all time.

Sean O’Malley’s rise to fame

O’Malley recently won a split decision against former UFC champion Petr Yan, the fight was not meant to go the way of O’Malley but he more than proved that he does in fact belong at the highest level. He has since seen himself be etched down as the number one contender with him most likely facing the winner of the title fight tonight. And with a pivotal rise to fame that has massively rose O’Malley’s stock since debuting in the UFC in 2018 unless you count his DWCS appearance with a viral KO and then win on the Ultimate Fighter 26 finale.

Should it be Sean O’Malley who faces Cejudo next should he win back the title tonight?
