Beneil Dariush doubts Dustin Poirier can win at UFC 291 I think he's gotten too comfortable

Ahead of his incoming UFC 289 co-headliner this weekend, surging lightweight contender, Beneil Dariush has doubted the chances of success of former interim division champion, Dustin Poirier next month ahead of his UFC 291 BMF championship rematch with Justin Gaethje.

Dariush, the current #4 ranked lightweight contender, is slated to co-headline UFC 289 this weekend in Vancouver, Canada, taking on former undisputed lightweight champion, Charles Oliveira at the Rogers Arena.

Last time out, the Iranian-born grappler turned in his seventh consecutive victory at UFC 280 last October, securing a hugely one-sided unanimous decision triumph over former two-weight KSW champion, Mateusz Gamrot.

As for Poirier, the Lafayette native most recently featured on the main card of UFC 281 in November, scoring a third round rear-naked choke submission win over Michael Chandler at Madison Square Garden.

And next month, atop a UFC 291 pay-per-view card in Salt Lake City, Utah – Poirier rematches fellow former interim lightweight titleholder, Gaethje at the Delta Center – with symbolic BMF spoils on the line.

Beneil Dariush looks to earn his first title challenge this weekend at UFC 289

Despite opening as a betting favorite to defeat Gaethje next month in Utah, Dariush claims “comfort” may have taken a foothold on Poirier, picking former training partner, Gaethje to defeat the Louisianan.

“I think if you’re practical, you go with Dustin Poirier because of the last fight [with Justin Gaethje],” Beneil Dariush said during an interview with MMA Fighting. “I would say this – right now, I would say Justin Gaethje seems more hungry, more focused.”

“Dustin Poirier, I think he’s made a lot of money, he’s done his thing,” Beneil Dariush explained. “He seems a little bit more comfortable, and comfort’s the greatest enemy of progress. I think Dustin Poirier is a little too comfortable but I could be wrong. He could definitely show up and show me that I’m wrong.”

Chris Curtis had the unique opportunity to confront one of his Twitter trolls ahead of his return to the Octagon on Saturday night.

‘Action Man’ is set to square off with No. 12 ranked middleweight contender Nassourdine Imavov as the promotion returns to the Great White North for UFC 289. Emanating from Rogers Arena in Vancouver, the event is scheduled to be headlined by a women’s bantamweight world title fight as Amanda Nunes begins her second 135-pound title reign. ‘The Lioness’ will put her gold on the line against Mexican standout Irene Aldana.

Chris Curtis will go into his featured prelim bout desperately seeking a win after coming up short in two of his last three outings, suffering unanimous decision defeats at the hands of Jack Hermansson and Kelvin Gastelum. Ahead of his highly anticipated walk to the Octagon, ‘Action Man’ had the opportunity to confront one of his online haters and shared a video clip of their interaction on social media.

“Not every day, you get to run into one of your Twitter trolls. Lol, they never keep the same energy. But it’s fine. I love you guys, too. Man I love [Canada],” Curtis posted on Twitter.

Clearly, this online troll’s tune changed quite a bit when confronted by Chris Curtis face-to-face as would likely be the case with most keyboard warriors should they ever find themselves confronted by the men and women they criticize.

As one of the more active UFC fighters on social media, Chris Curtis is undoubtedly subjected to a fair amount of criticism online, but it’s nice to see the ‘Action Man’ take the high road instead of using it as an opportunity to assert his dominance over the outspoken fight fan. It’s also possible that ‘Action Man’ could be saving his pent-up frustration for his return to the Octagon on Saturday night.

Making his UFC debut in 2021, Chris Curtis scored three straight wins against Phil Hawes, Brendan Allen, and Rodolfo Vieira. Since breaking into the middleweight division’s top-15, Curtis has struggled to find the win column but did score himself an impressive second-round knockout against Joaquin Buckley in December. Curtis recently spoke about his return at UFC 289 in a LowKick MMA exclusive which you can watch below:

Charles Oliveira maintains he will fight Islam Makhachev for title UFC 289 I'm next I'm in line next

Former undisputed lightweight champion, Charles Oliveira has denied claims from Islam Makhachev’s head coach, Javier Mendez that he will miss out a rematch with the Russian even with a win at UFC 289 – maintaining he is next in line to the throne should he beat Beneil Dariush this weekend.

Oliveira, the current #1 ranked lightweight contender, has been sidelined from the Octagon since he headlined UFC 280 last October in Abu Dhabi, UAE – suffering a second round arm-triangle submission loss to Makhachev in the pair’s vacant title fight.

With the defeat, Sao Paulo native, Charles Oliveira saw his division-best 12-fight winning run halted by Makhachev, as well as missing out on the opportunity to reclaim gold which he lost to the scales at UFC 274 last May.

And now slated to co-headline UFC 289 this weekend in an expected title-eliminator against Dariush in Vancouver, Canada, Oliveira’s chances of securing a title rematch with Makhachev have already been shot down by the aforenoted, Mendez – who claims Dariush is the only contender elect with a win on Saturday.

“I want [Beneil Dariush] to win [at UFC 289] because I feel he deserves it,” Javier Mendez said. “And Charles (Oliveira), I’ll be honest with you, I don’t know if we’ll get Charles even if he does win. It’s all based on what the UFC looks at the algorithm for, who’s gonna get the most money. Charles winning is not gonna be enough.”

“I think it’s gonna be (Justin) Gaethje or Dustin (Poirier) that’ll get the shot if Beneil doesn’t win,” Mendez explained. “Beniel wins, he gets the shot. I want Beneil, only because he’s a great challenge and he deserves it. But if Charles wins, then, hey, good for him too. Then Charles will probably have to fight one more time.”

Charles Oliveira believes a win at UFC 289 will secure him title rematch with Islam Makhachev

However, according to Oliveira, neither incoming UFC 291 headliners, former interim champions, Dustin Poirier nor Justin Gaethje – whom the Brazilian holds a win over, will leapfrog him if he wins at UFC 289 this weekend.

“Whoever wins this fight [at UFC 289], this Saturday, is gonna go for the [lightweight] title [against Islam Makhachev],” Charles Oliveira told assembled media during his availability ahead of UFC 289 this weekend. “I’m next – I’m in line for it.”

Amanda Nunes shuts down trilogy fight with Valentina Shevchenko that don't sell UFC

Ahead of her Octagon return at UFC 289 this weekend, two-weight champion, Amanda Nunes has played down the possibility of a future trilogy bout with former undisputed flyweight champion, Valentina Shevchenko – doubting the promotion is even interested in the fight anymore.

Nunes, who headlines UFC 289 this weekend, makes her Octagon return against Mexican challenger, Irene Aldana, attempting to successfully defend her bantamweight crown as she begins her second reign at 135lbs.

Last time out, the Bahia native headlined UFC 277 last July in Dallas, Texas – successfully avenging a shocking career loss to common-foe, Julianna Peña – turning in a dominant, comprehensive unanimous decision success.

As for Shevchenko, the former flyweight champion most recently co-headlined UFC 285 back in March, dropping her title in spectacular fashion to Mexican contender, Alexa Grasso – submitting to a third round rear-naked choke at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

However, prior to Shevchenko’s loss to Grasso, and Nunes’ defeat against Peña – fans had called continually for a third fight between the two, with the Brazilian landing victories over the former in close 2016 and 2017 bouts, respectively.

Amanda Nunes claims Valentina Shevchenko’s game can be exploited

As far as Nunes is concerned, however, a third fight with Krgysztan native, Shevchenko has been cast into doubt, with the Brazilian claiming another pairing of the two would likely not sell as many pay-per-views nowadays.

“Yeah, I don’t know,” Amanda Nunes told assembled media at UFC 289 regarding a trilogy title fight fight with Valentina Shevchenko. “I think I have a lot of noise at 135 [pounds], and I don’t think the UFC is going to stop and then go back with the Valentina (Shevchenko) thing. That don’t sell nothing.”

“I was not surprised [that Valentina Shevchenko lost],” Amanda Nunes explained. “I fought Valentina when she was in her prime, and we were both growing. Last fight, we were both growing as a fighter. Valentina has a lot of holes that I can see. I wasn’t able to do back then, but I see how Alexa Grasso would be able to finish her.”

Amanda Nunes weighs up move to WWE ahead of UFC 289 return why not?

Synonymous with being described as the greatest female fighter of all time, the Lioness, Amanda Nunes is the sport’s only woman to date who simultaneously holds titles in two UFC divisions, reigning as the current Ultimate Fighting Championship Bantamweight and Featherweight queen pin. Nunes, now at 35 years of age, has accomplished everything there is to achieve with very few blemishes on her career and legacy so far.

So many fans are left wondering what is there for Nunes actually to achieve. Nunes will have plenty of options in sports once she retires down various different paths, but one that intrigues many the most and also the potential Queen of could come within UFC’s new partner company since Endeavour took over WWE, as a professional wrestler.

Amanda Nunes weighs up move to professional wrestling

“If the contract is amazing, why not?” Amanda Nunes told New York Post regarding possibly joining WWE at some point. “What I wanted to do in MMA, I did already — even more than I thought in my head when I went through my whole career. I became a double champion. I wanted only one — I had two … I’m so happy, and whatever comes after I’m done with UFC, we’ll see. For sure you guys will see me around, anyways.”

Despite being the first woman to become a double champion in the UFC, she wouldn’t be the first to transition over to WWE, not even in the Bantamweight division with current WWE Tag-Team champion, Ronda Rousey at the helm in WWE at the moment.

Brazil’s “Lionness” and future hall of famer seeks an additional career UFC title defense against Mexico’s Irene Aldana at UFC 289 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
