Dustin Poirier announces move to the welterweight division Ok I'll move up UFC

Former interim lightweight champion, Dustin Poirier has seemingly announced plans to make a move to the welterweight limit for the first time in his professional career in his return to the Octagon – after suffering a thunderous knockout loss just weeks ago at UFC 291.

Poirier, the current number three ranked lightweight contender, headlined the aforenoted pay-per-view event in Salt Lake City, Utah – competing for symbolic BMF championship spoils in a title-eliminator rematch with fellow former interim champion, Justin Gaethje.

And despite a bright start from the Lafayette native in the opening round, American Top Team staple, Poirier suffered a devastating second round high-kick knockout loss to Gaethje at the Delta Center – dropping his first stoppage loss via strikes since a 2016 defeat to Michael Johnson.

Weighing-up his fighting future in the wake of his stunning knockout loss, Poirier claimed he still believed he was “better than” Gaethje despite his loss, as well as welcoming the prospect of a long-awaited grudge match against promotional alum, Nate Diaz – if the Stockton native makes an Octagon return off the back of his decision loss to Jake Paul this weekend in Texas

Dustin Poirier appears to confirm welterweight division leap

This morning, however, Poirier appears to be willing to play in to a long-rumored divisional leap for the second time in his UFC tenure – amid long calls for the Lousiana native to make a climb to the welterweight limit.

“Ok, I’ll move up,” Dustin Poirier posted on his official X account.

Appearing to catch the attention of undefeated Kazakh welterweight contender, Shavkat Rakhmonov off the back of his tweet, the surging knockout ace and submission specialist – who recently saw a planned UFC Noche co-headliner with former interim middleweight title chaser, Kelvin Gastelum, fall to the wayside, after the San Jose native suffered a nose injury during his training camp.

How to do you think Dustin Poirier fairs at the welterweight limit?

Marcos Rogerio de Lima horrific injuries after UFC 291 loss to Derrick Lewis my teeth are loose

UFC heavyweight Marcos Rogerio de Lima details the damage he suffered following his knockout loss to Derrick Lewis at UFC 291.

Lima was on the receiving end of an explosive performance by Lewis, who holds the record for most knockouts in UFC history. In the bouts opening seconds, ‘The Black Beast’ would land a flying knee that would drop Lima before he would be finished with an onslaught of ground and pound

While Lima stood while Lewis’ win would be made official by Bruce Buffer, with no significant cuts or lumps – the Brazilian walked away with some serious damage done.

Marcos Rogerio de Lima reveals significant injuries suffered at UFC 291

Talking to Super Lutas, Marcos Rogerio de Lima discussed the injuries he suffered and how it has impacted his day-to-day life.

There’s a lot of people sending me messages, emails,” Marcos Rogerio de Lima said. “I’ve never received that many messages. I lost one fight and instead of supporting me, people from my country, my fans, are bothering me. I took a hard knee. My teeth are all loose. I can’t eat properly. It’s a hard moment. Let’s support our fighters and motivate them (H/T MMANews)

Lima, who has been fighting in the UFC for going on a decade, came into the bout on a nice 4-1 run in his last five. While this opportunity to break into the top 10 didn’t go to plan, Lima has proven himself a competent heavyweight and still remains ranked No.15.

Lima did not give a time frame on how long it will take to fully recover from his injuries.

As for Lewis, the fan favourite successfully ended a three-fight losing streak, which all came by stoppage. Lewis came in looking in great shape and seemed to have an extra level of motivation heading into to the fight. The 38-year-old is now a free agent and has set himself up nicely to get some big fights, and hopefully big money, in or outside of the UFC.

Off the back of his stunning second round knockout loss to two-time opponent, Justin Gaethje in the main event of UFC 291 over the weekend, former interim lightweight Dustin Poirier has welcomed the possibility of a return to the Octagon against veteran fan-favorite, Nate Diaz, is the latter makes a comeback to the promotion.

Poirier, who headlined UFC 291 over the course of last weekend, suffered his first knockout loss since 2016, with fellow former interim gold holder, Gaethje slumping the Louisana native with a thunderous right high-kick KO

Dustin Poirier open to long-awaited fight with Nate Diaz

Forced to regroup following his failed attempt to earn a title fight with either Islam Makhachev or former foe, Charles Oliveira with his loss to Gaethje at UFC 291 last weekend in Salt Lake City, Utah – Poirier has weighed up the possibility of fighting Stockton veteran, Diaz in the future – that is if the latter makes a return to the Octagon.

“He can’t get his leg high, right?” Dustin Poirier said of Nate Diaz during an interview with MMA Fighting. “Like, a high kick or nothing? Alright, I’ll take that fight. Let’s f*cking go. I’m not chasing it. It’s funny because you’re the third person in the last week to bring his name up and he’s not even in the organization. That would be a good one.”

As for Diaz, the younger brother of former Strikeforce and WEC middleweight champion, Nick Diaz, makes his combat sports return this weekend atop a pay-per-view event in Dallas, Texas – taking on the outspoken, Jake Paul in his professional boxing debut.

Diaz most recently securing a fourth round guillotine choke win over former interim lightweight champion, Tony Ferguson in an impromptu UFC 279 headliner at the welterweight limit last September.

Michael Chiesa shuts down talk of retirement after UFC 291 I'm just not done yet

Despite suffering his third consecutive loss over the weekend in a main card opener at UFC 291, welterweight grappler, Michael Chiesa has ruled out an incoming retirement from mixed martial arts, claiming he is “not done just yet” – after his first round submission loss to Kevin Holland.

Chiesa, who slumped to 18-7 as a professional at UFC 291 in Salt Lake City over the weekend, dropped a one-sided opening round loss to the surging, Holland in ‘The Beehive State’ – suffering his third career D’Arce choke submission defeat.

Sidelined since November 2021, Chiesa, who recently underwent surgery to address a greulling back injury, had yet to featured since dropping a unanimous decision loss to Sean Brady at the UFC Apex facility.

Prior to that at UFC 265, Chiesa dropped a D’Arce choke loss to incoming headliner, Vicente Luque.

Michael Chiesa has no plans to call time on career

And despite suggestions of a potential retirement from active competition off the back of his loss to Holland over the weekend, Chiesa claimed he was not ready to hang up his gloves

“MMA fans are coming at me all different types of direction, saying I should retire and I should be done, be a broadcaster now,” Michael Chiesa said on UFC Round Up. “There’s just so many things that people are saying but it’s just gonna sweeten the pot because I’m not done. I just didn’t show up on fight night.”

“Trust me, I’m not gonna be the guy to overstay my welcome,” Michael Chiesa continue. “But I’m just not done yet. I have more to prove to myself.”

Over the course of his tenure in the UFC, The Ultimate Fighter 15 victor, Chiesa has landed wins over the likes of Al Iaquinta, Francisco Trinaldo, Jim Miller, Beneil Dariush, Carlos Condit, Diego Sanchez, Neil Magny, and former lightweight champion, Rafael dos Anjos.

Justin Gaethje welcomes fight with UFC rival Conor McGregor sign the contract big boy

Despite initially shutting down the prospect of a future fight with former two-division champion, Conor McGregor off the back of his BMF title win over the course of the weekend at UFC 291, Justin Gaethje now appears more than interested in a grudge match in the future.

Gaethje, the newly-minted number two ranked lightweight contender, headlined UFC 291 over the course of the weekend in Salt Lake City, Utah – landing a second round high-kick knockout win over common-foe and two-time opponent, Dustin Poirier to clinch the symbolic BMF title.

And in the immediate aftermath of his victory over former interim gold holder, Poirier in ‘The Beehive State’, Gaethje became the target of Dublin striker, McGregor, who played up a long-awaited pairing between himself and the Arizona native – appearing to also veto a planned welterweight comeback against Michael Chandler.

However, as far as Gaethje was concerned, he would not share the Octagon with McGregor – accusing him of performance-enhancing drug use during his two-year hiatus from active competition.

Justin Gaethje now welcomes future clash with Conor McGregor

Predicting a knockout win over Gaethje within the first clean exchange, Gaethje has now since urged the 35-year-old counter striker to agree to a bout.

“Sign the contract big bog,” Justin Gaethje posted on his official X account, aimed at Conor McGregor.”

Replying to Gaethje, McGregor posted a picture of a signed photograph taken after his 2015 featherweight title unification win over Jose Aldo – with the caption, “signed”.

In the midst of a two-fight losing skid, McGregor headlined UFC 264 back in July 2021, suffering a first round doctor’s stoppage TKO loss to the aforenoted, Poirier, after fracturing his left tibia and fibula.

Prior to that loss, McGregor suffered his first knockout defeat in professional mixed martial arts, in the form of a second round knockout loss to Poirier in Abu Dhabi, UAE in January of that year.

Tony Ferguson

Sean O’Malley isn’t ready to close the book on Tony Ferguson’s mixed martial arts career just yet.

El Cucuy‘ hasn’t seen his hand raised since a 2019 TKO against UFC Hall of Famer Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone. Over the last four years, Ferguson has fallen six straight times, including a third-round submission defeat at the hands of Bobby Green at UFC 291. He is now one loss shy of the record currently held by avid dinosaur denier BJ Penn.

At this point, even Tony Ferguson’s most loyal fans are calling for the former interim champion to call it quits, but there is one man that wants to see him give it one more go before throwing in the towel on his 15-year career.

“Tony Ferguson is on a six-fight losing streak,” O’Malley said during a recent episode of the TimboSugarShow on YouTube. “Tony was eating them until he was sleeping on them… I say give him one more. Yeah, for sure. I don’t want to count him out… Listen to who he lost to; [Justin] Gaethje, Charles Oliveira, Beneil Dariush, Michael Chandler, Nate Diaz, Bobby Green. He’s not losing to f*cking turds.”

Tony Ferguson Accused Bobby Green of Intentional Eye Poke

To O’Malley’s point, Tony Ferguson has faced a veritable who’s who of combat sports killers. Perhaps it’s time for ‘El Cucuy’ to mix it up with some up-and-comers in the sport. A win or two outside of the top ten could do wonders for Ferguson’s confidence inside the cage. And even if he comes up short, you’re left with a couple of young guns that have a notable name on their hit list.

Unfortunately, Ferguson was less than graceful following his latest defeat.

During his bout with Bobby Green on Saturday night, Tony Ferguson suffered an eye poke early on. It’s an occurrence that sadly happens from time to time in mixed martial arts, but ‘El Cucuy’ was quick to suggest that the infraction was deliberate following the bout.

“Bobby knew the direction of the fight & I believe he knew what he was doing when he poked my eye. He has a big History of moves like this. It significantly impaired my vision, making it difficult to see clearly out of my eye,” Ferguson wrote on social media.

Green addressed the accusations during a recent appearance on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, which you can see below:

Do you believe Bobby Green intentionally poked Tony Ferguson in the eye or is this nothing more than ‘El Cucuy’ making excuses after another tough loss inside the Octagon?
