Dana White claims Stephen Thompson rejected fight with Ian Machado Garry after UFC 292

UFC president, Dana White has claimed that former two-time undisputed welterweight title challenger, Stephen Thompson rejected a potential fight with undefeated Irish contender, Ian Machado Garry – after the Dubliner called out the striking favorite following his one-sided decision win over Neil Magny at UFC 292.

Improving to 13-0 as a professional last night and lodging his sixth consecutive Octagon win, Portmarnock striker, Machado Garry managed to land a series of brutal knockdowns via leg kicks against Illinois native, Magny over the course of their three round short-notice clash on the main card of UFC 292 in Boston, Massachusetts.

And following his judging victory, the outspoken Machado Garry issued a call out to veteran Simpsonville challenger, Thompson, calling for the organization to book him in a five round clash with the fan-favorite kickboxer in his next Octagon walk.

Ian Machado Garry eyes striking clash with Stephen Thompson next

However, according to the above-mentioned, White, Thompson, who has been sidelined since December of last year, rejected a pairing with Machado Garry.

“‘Wonderboy’ (Stephen Thompson) turned down the fight [with Ian Machado Garry] tonight,” Dana White told assembled media after UFC 292. “We make fights, man. That’s what we do.”

Scheduled to return at UFC 291 back in July, Thompson saw a slated bout with Michel Pereira fall to the wayside ahead of the clash, after the Brazilian missed non-title weight by four pounds, with Thompson electing against remaining on the card in a catchweight bout with the former.

And targeting an Octagon return – potentially at UFC 295 in November at Madison Square Garden, Thompson has drawn the attention of former division champion and former pound-for-pound number one, Kamaru Usman for an end-of-year clash.

As for Machado Garry, the 25-year-old has been backed to potentially fight at that pay-per-view card in a return as per, White, who also confirmed that the Dubliner would likely earn himself an Irish homecoming in the capital with a victory in his next Octagon outing.

Chris Weidman urged to retire from MMA after UFC 292 loss by Dana White

UFC president, Dana White has urged former undisputed middleweight champion, Chris Weidman to call time on his career, after suffering a rather one-sided unanimous decision loss to Brad Tavares in his Octagon return at UFC 292 last night in Boston, Massachusetts.

Weidman, a former undisputed middleweight champion, returned from a gruesome compound fracture of his right tibia and fibula last night against the aforenoted perennial contender, Tavares – dropping a decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) defeat to the Hawaiian over the course of three rounds

The outing came as the Baldwin native’s first since he suffered a catastrophic leg injury back in 2021 in a rematch against Uriah Hall, however, the returning Serra-Longo MMA staple failed to get going throughout his comeback against Tavares, taking significant damage to his left leg from the onset and throughout.

Chris Weidman urged to consider retiring after UFC 292 loss

Sharing his thoughts on Weidman’s future following his second consecutive loss last night, UFC leader, White revealed that the former champion likely suffered a cruciate ligament injury in his left leg during his fight with Tavares, and urged him to heavily consider retiring from combat sports competition.

“I love Chris Weidman – I love him,” Dana White told assembled media after UFC 292. “I love his family, I think he should retire. We talked to Dr. [Davidson], he thinks he [Chris Weidman] blew his ACL, MCL – he blew one of his CLs. The guy is just coming back from a gruesome injury and, listen, man, father time is not our friend at all. But definitely, if you’re a professional athlete.”

“Depending on the damage to the knee, you’re talking another year,’ White explained. “So I would say, ‘Chris, I love you, please, please retire.”

Without a victory since August 2020, Weidman’s most recent win came in the form of a unanimous decision win over current PFL (Professional Fighters League) contender, Omari Akhmedov.

Sean O’Malley delivered a finish for the ages on Saturday night when he scored a second-round knockout to claim the UFC bantamweight world championship.

Stepping into the Octagon for his first UFC title fight, O’Malley did not disappoint, delivering a picture-perfect counter right hand that planted his opponent, Aljamain Sterling, on the canvas. Though it took ‘Sugar’ a tad longer to get the finish, the blow was immediately compared to Conor McGregor’s legendary 13-second knockout of general consensus featherweight GOAT, Jose Aldo, at UFC 194.

Fans Upset Over Sean O’Malley Stoppage at UFC 292

The knockouts are undeniably similar, but unlike McGregor’s, Sean O’Malley’s came with a smidge of controversy. After ‘Sugar’ lands the devastating strike, Sterling is still conscious and moving, attempting to avoid further danger and get back to a more favorable position. Unfortunately, referee Marc Goddard failed to give the ‘Funk Master’ that chance, calling for the stoppage just as Sterling rolled onto his stomach.

Fans were quick to cry foul, suggesting that the stoppage was entirely too early for a title fight. Whether or not that’s the case is sure to be debated over the next several weeks, but no matter which side of the argument you fall on, the fact remains that we have a brand new UFC bantamweight world champion.

Immediately following his victory, Sean O’Malley called for a rematch with the only man to hand him a loss inside the Octagon, Marlon Vera. ‘Chito’ scored his own victory at UFC 292, besting bantamweight mainstay Pedro Munhoz in a three-round striker’s delight. With top-ranked bantamweight contender Merab Dvalishvili on the shelf following surgery, Vera is in a prime position to be the first man to challenge ‘Sugar’ for his new swag.

Sean O'Malley

While Sean O’Malley is busy celebrating his massive UFC world title win over Aljamain Sterling on Saturday night, fight fans are crying foul, suggesting his win was nothing more than the result of an early stoppage.

O’Malley shocked the world in the second round of the pair’s UFC 292 headliner, delivering a perfectly-timed counter right that planted Sterling on the canvas. O’Malley quickly swarmed the champ, looking to land the kill shot with some ground-and-pound strikes. In an effort to defend and recover, Sterling rolled onto his stomach, prompting referee Marc Goddard to step in and call for the stoppage.

Many fans were quick to point out that Sterling was still conscious, still moving, and still defending. Even UFC commentator Joe Rogan suggested that the stoppage was a tad suspect, a sentiment echoed by top-ranked bantamweight contender and close personal friend of Aljamain Sterling, Merab Dvalishvili.

“Another Fucking Early Stoppage! I pray that me or my teammates don’t have Mark Goddard in the cage again,” Dvalishvili wrote on social media. “We are FIGHTERS … let us fight til the end !”

Dvalishvili was far from alone in his assessment of the finish with many suggesting that Sean O’Malley’s victory was the direct result of an early stoppage. Some even went so far as to suggest that the UFC orchestrated the finish as a means of getting the title on a much more marketable and fan-friendly fighter.

Undefeated Irish standout Ian Garry and top-ten-ranked bantamweight contender Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera decided to celebrate their individual victories at UFC 292 on Saturday night by hopping in the shower… With each other.

Garry and Vera gave fans inside Boston’s iconic TD Garden a show, scoring wins in their respective fights against some very tough opposition. The Future’ put on a dominant three-round performance against welterweight mainstay Neil Magny en route to his sixth-straight victory inside the Octagon.

Prior to Ian Garry’s success in Bean Town, ‘Chito’ Vera earned his own W on the night, besting Pedro Munhoz in a three-round striker’s delight.

Following the fight, both men decided to hop in the shower and freshen up. Together. And record it.

What’s Next for Ian Garry and Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera?

With his win over Pedro Munhoz, ‘Chito’ Vera will likely find himself in line for a bantamweight title opportunity. It just so happens that will come against a man he has already faced and beaten before, Sean O’Malley.

‘Sugar’ shocked the world on Saturday night, defeating bantamweight great Aljamain Sterling with a stunning second-round knockout. Now sitting atop the 135-pound throne, O’Malley appears to be on a collision course with the only man to hand him a loss inside the Octagon.

Elsewhere, Ian Garry looks primed to take a stab at a top-ten-ranked welterweight contender after handily dispatching the No. 11 ranked Neil Magny. During his post-fight-interview with Joe Rogan, Garry called for a December clash with perennial contender Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson.

Former two-division world champion Henry Cejudo wasted no time calling out the new UFC bantamweight titleholder, Sean O’Malley.

‘Sugar’ shocked the world on Saturday night, scoring a brilliant second-round TKO against Aljamain Sterling to capture the 135-pound crown inside Boston’s iconic TD Garden at UFC 292. By the time the title was wrapped around O’Malley’s waist, fight fans were already wondering who would be the first man to challenge the newly minted world champion.

With top-ranked contender Merab Dvalishvili recently undergoing surgery, all signs point toward another winner at UFC 292, Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera. The pair already have a history, making the fight an easy sell for the promotion. But if you ask Henry Cejudo, that sounds like a terrible idea.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Henry Cejudo suggested that there is only one man for the job and you can probably guess who that man is.

“Congratulations pussy @SugaSeanMMA how can you say you are the best in the world, When you are not even the best in our city,” Cejudo wrote. “@danawhite can’t give him Chito because he sucks and if you give him Merat he’s only going to wrestle. Let’s run it in PHX.

Henry Cejudo Will Likely Need a Win Before Earning Another Shot at Bantamweight Gold

Unfortunately for Henry Cejudo, he’s coming off a loss to the man Sean O’Malley just smashed in under two rounds. Further complicating the Olympic gold medalist’s request is the fact that ‘Chito’ Vera has back-to-back wins in the division. Something Cejudo hasn’t accomplished since 2020. Maybe with a win against a top-ten contender, ‘Triple C’ could make an argument, but at this point, he’s going to have to sit back and let O’Malley settle some long-standing business with Vera.

Sean O’Malley’s only loss inside the Octagon came against Vera at UFC 252 nearly three years ago. O’Malley suffered a leg injury in the early going and couldn’t generate enough offense to stave off the attack of ‘Chito’ which led to a first-round knockout loss. Since then, O’Malley has been chomping at the bit to run it back.

It now looks like they’ll have the opportunity to do just that. But this time, UFC gold will hang in the balance.
