Colby Covington changes tune on Ian Garry fight I need to move up the rankings

Colby Covington appears to no longer be interested in the matchup with Ian Machado Garry.

After Garry beat Geoff Neal back in February, he called out Covington and on paper, the fight made a lot of sense. ‘Chaos’ then responded and showed interest in the bout but he said Garry needed to follow three stipulations for the scrap to happen.

However, the fight has still not been agreed to, and now speaking to SOSCAST, Colby Covington says he is ready to move on from the matchup as he wants to fight someone ranked above him.

Ian Garry claims Colby Covington has no interest fighting him He's been avoiding me UFC

“It’s always big cities and bright lights every time I fight,” Covington said,. “I’m always on the top of the marquee so you know when I fight next, it’ll be a big pay-per-view blockbuster, [and] the biggest show that the UFC does is International Fight Week. I’m hoping that I’ll fight International Fight Week, [but it] doesn’t matter who I fight…”

“I told him you know if he wants to do these three stipulations we can fight,” Covington added. “But if he doesn’t you know I got to move up in the rankings, I’m not trying to go behind me.”

Currently, only the welterweights ranked above Covington are Shavkat Rakhmonov, Belal Muhammad, and Kamaru Usman. So, it does appear that Covington will have to fight someone ranked behind him next time out.

Colby Covington’s stipulations for Ian Machado Garry

In Colby Covington’s response to Ian Machado Garry, he told the Irishman he must follow three stipulations for the fight to happen.

Those stipulations that Covington laid out were that Garry needed to allow Instagram comments again, his wife had 60 seconds to beg for the fight, and Layla had to appear in one of Covington’s MyBookie promo videos.

Currently, Garry hasn’t done any of those which is why Covington says he is moving on from the Irishman.

Whether you love him or you hate him, Ian Machado Garry is here to stay.

‘The Future’ scored his 14th straight win on Saturday night, securing a split decision victory over Geoff Neal as part of the UFC 298 main event in Anaheim. The W will likely move Garry a few notches higher in the welterweight top 10, much to the chagrin of fight fans who have grown to loathe and detest his brash and cocky attitude in recent months.

But whether or not he has the support of UFC fans makes no difference to the Dublin native. Admiration — or in this case, the lack thereof — will not deter Garry in his goal of one day becoming one of the greatest mixed martial arts in the world.

“I’m not trying to be anything,” Garry told Ariel Helwani during an appearance on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour. “I’m being myself. I’m not trying to be the good guy. I’m not trying to be the villain. I’m not trying to be the hero. I’m not trying to be anything on this planet, but [whether] people want to boo or people want to cheer, I’m showing up and doing what I want.

“So when I’m standing in the Octagon with Joe Rogan trying to do my post-fight interview and the whole crowd is booing… In the end, you’re all here watching me. Keep booing. That’s the type of person I am. Someone says something to me in the street, I’m gonna be like, ‘Hey, get back here. Don’t chat sh*t and then run away.’ That’s the person I am. Obviously, having everyone behind you is amazing, but at the end of the day, whether they love me or they hate me, I’m showing up to do what I want to do and that’s become one of the greatest of all time.”

Labeled as nothing more than a Conor McGregor wannabe, Ian Machado Garry began to draw the ire of fighters and fans after a slew of his co-workers, including Sean Strickland and Colby Covington, slammed his unconventional marriage to 40-year-old TV personality Layla Anna-Lee. ‘The Future’ has been repeatedly forced to defend his wife and the fact that he chose to take her maiden name rather than the more traditional approach.

Strickland also labeled Garry a “cuck” after learning that Anna-Lee’s ex-husband — Richard Cullen — is currently employed as the Irishman’s nutritionist. That led to accusations that the former partners were still romantically involved with one another, something Garry vehemently denies.

Garry’s reputation for being a “nomad” in the gym certainly did him no favors. He was notoriously booted from Team Renegade — the home gym of current welterweight king Leon Edwards — last year for “not adding to the team’s culture.” Michael Chandler and Brendan Allen have also commented on the frustrations of dealing with Garry in the gym.

But no matter your take on Machado Garry, the fact remains that he is undefeated in his MMA career and in less than two years with the promotion, has already entered the UFC’s welterweight top 10.

Ian Garry vows to leave Geoff Neal like a defecating dog at UFC 298 I'll make him quit

Unbeaten welterweight contender, Ian Garry has promised to leave incoming foe, Geoff Neal looking like a defecating dog in their UFC 298 grudge match later this month – claiming he will make the Texas striker “quit” inside the Octagon.

Garry, the current number number ten ranked welterweight contender, has been sidelined since August of last year, most recently turning in a one-sided decision shutout over recent winner, welterweight veteran, Neil Magny.

And booked for a high-profile clash with Kill Cliff FC stablemate, Vicente Luque at UFC 296 back in December, a nasty viral infection forced Dublin striker, Garry from the pairing with the Brazilian-American.

Ian Garry provides bizarre prediction for UFC 298 return

Set to make his return this month in a rescheduled fight against Texan striker, Neal at UFC 298 in Anaheim, Garry has made a rather bizarre and specific prediction for his planned finish of the former – anecdotally describing the process of a dog defecating.

“What am I going to finish him (Geoff Neal) with?” Ian Garry told on his official Instagram account. “I am going to make him quit. He’ll choose when he’s done. I’d like to kick him to the body and have him do that – when the dog is sh*tting.”

“The dog looks at you like – when they’re pooing, for protection,” Ian Garry explained. “That’s what they do, right? [They] look at their owners when they’re pooing because that’s when they’re vulnerable for attack.” (H/T MMANews)

Holding the number eight rank at the welterweight limit, Neal most recently featured at UFC 285 back in March, suffering a third round rear-naked choke loss to Shavkat Rakhmonov, which snapped a winning run over both the above-mentioned, Luque, and Santiago Ponzinibbio.

UFC welterweight Geoff Neal discusses Ian Garry and his choice to print a t-shirt featuring Neal’s mugshot.

Garry has not done himself any favours over the past few months. While the Irishman has always had his share of detractors, the levels of criticism have spiked significantly recently.

Some of the criticism has come because of Garry’s private life, but some has come because of his ‘trash talk’ or attempts to get under his opponent’s skin. This includes accusing Neil Magny of child abuse, which Magny has said has impacted his custody battle, and Garry putting Neal’s mugshot on a t-shirt and posting it to social media.

While some of the hate towards Garry for his personal life is unwarranted, it must be said the 26-year-old has opened himself up to some criticism after sharing large parts of life online, and also taking shots at fellow fighters.

Geoff Neal talks of attesting Ian Garry booking

Unfortunately, Garry had tri withdraw from his UFC 296 fight against Vicente Luque after catching pneumonia. Instead of rebooking the fight against the Brazilian, the UFC decided to rebook Garry vs. Neal, this time for UFC 299 in Miami.

Talking of Garry’s previous actions, and looking ahead of their bout, Neal did not seem pleased with Garry and was happy to get the fight rebooked.

“I figured we would run it back after because I got sick and I couldn’t fight that last fight — well, just health issues — so I figured he would want to run it back,” Neal said Monday on The MMA Hour. “But then he was talking s***, ‘Well, I already beat him, so I don’t have to fight him.’ Weird s***. I’m glad we got a chance to run it back now.

“It was difficult, especially after all the s*** he was talking and all the stuff going on. Pulling out of the fight, it just looks bad.”

Unbeaten welterweight striker, Ian Garry is already set for his return to he Octagon following his withdrawal from UFC 296 tonight, with a rescheduled clash against divisional rival, Geoff Neal currently on deck for a UFC 299 card in March of next year in Miami, Florida.

Garry, the current number ten ranked welterweight contender, was slated to feature on the main card of UFC 296 tonight in Las Vegas, taking on training partner and perennial contender, Vicente Luque in a high-stakes welterweight clash.

However, earlier this week, the Portmarnock native was forced from his fight with the Brazilian-American, as he battles a bout of pneumonia, denying him a fourth Octagon appearance of the year.

And scrapped from the card entirely as a result, Luque, according to promotional CEO, White, claimed the Kill Cliff FC mainstay rejected a number of bouts sent his way on just days’ notice.

Furthermore, according to the organizational leader, Garry, 26, is now slated to feature at UFC 299 in March of next year in the ‘Sunshine State’ – taking on welterweight rival, Neal in a rebooked pairing at the welterweight limit.

In his most recent outing, Garry improved to 13-0 as a professional, defeating welterweight’s most winningest fighter, Neil Magny in a shutout unanimous decision victory.

Sidelined since March of this year, Neal, the currently number eighth ranked contender has yet to feature since he dropped a third round rear-naked choke submission win to the unbeaten, Shavkat Rakhmonov at UFC 285.

UFC 299 takes place on March 10. from the Kaseya Center in Miami, Florida, with an undisputed bantamweight championship rematch between Sean O’Malley, and Marlon Vera set to take main event honors.

Ian Garry provides bleak update on health after UFC 296 exit I can barely breathe

Forced out of his return to the Octagon this weekend at UFC 296, undefeated welterweight contender, Ian Garry has claimed he can “barely breathe” after he was diagnosed with pneumonia ahead of his return, ruling him from a fight with perennial contender, Vicente Luque.

Garry, the current number ten ranked welterweight contender, was slated to feature on the main card of UFC 296 this weekend against Brazilian-American challenger, Luque, however, has since been ruled from the bout.

Failing to appear at media day obligations on Wednesday earlier this week, Garry, 26, was confirmed as out of his fight with Luque by promotional president, Dana White, who revealed the Portmarnock native was dealing with flu-like symptoms, which later developed into pneumonia.

Voicing his displeasure at his removal from the bout, former Team KF staple, Garry claimed it was UFC medical staff and doctor’s which forced his withdrawal from a fight with training partner, Luque, not a decision he had made himself.

Ian Garry voices disappointment at UFC 296 exit

And jibed at – alongside his wife and manager, Layla Anna-Lee overnight by incoming UFC 296 headliner and welterweight title challenger, Colby Covington – who hinted at apparent infidelity from the latter, Garry has provided a worrying update on his current condition and health as he recovers from pneumonia.

“How are we, I can barely breathe,” Ian Garry told TNT Sports. “It’s upsetting, it’s irritating, it’s annoying. ‘Cause you guys know I love to fight more than anything. And I’ve never pulled out of a fight, I’ve never had to be in this situation, but here we are. And we’ll deal with it the way we deal with everything: the best in the world.”

“I mean, the truth is – I’ve got what I’ve got, we’ll deal with it,” Ian Garry explained. “And then we’ll get back on the horse and then we’ll fight. …But yeah, I just wanna let you guys know, that I’m good – and I’m coming for everybody with a full head of steam.”
