Israel Adesanya picks Sean O'Malley to win the title at UFC 292 It's destiny

Ahead of his first championship outing under the banner of the UFC tonight in Boston, Massachusetts, incoming title challenger, Sean O’Malley is destined to win undisputed bantamweight spoils against the incumbent, Aljamain Sterling, according to middleweight best, Israel Adesanya.

O’Malley, who enters tonight’s TD Garden title fight showdown with Sterling as the number two ranked bantamweight contender, has been sidelined since turning in the most high-profile win of his Octagon stint to date, with a close, split decision win over former titleholder, Petr Yan at UFC 280 back in October of last year.

As for Sterling, the dominant Uniondale recorded a record-setting third consecutive successful bantamweight title defense at UFC 288 back in May, defeating the returning former two-weight champion, Henry Cejudo over the course of five rounds in a close, split judging win.

Israel Adesanya sides with Sean O’Malley ahead of UFC 292

And despite entering tonight’s title showdown with Sterling as a consensus betting underdog, Dana White’s Contender Series product, O’Malley has the backing of Nigerian-Kiwi striker, Adesanya, who is siding with him to win spoils.

“They can both strike and they can both grapple,” Israel Adesanya said of the pairing on his official YouTube channel. “I like Sean’s flow, his work, the way he fights, the way he moves, his footwork, his taunts, his kicks, his selection, his combinations, the way he picks his shots, the way he darts in and out.”

“… If it goes the distance, I think he can do it,” Israel Adesanya explained. “Sean O’Malley’s locked in. I think he can do five rounds. I’m going to go [with] Sean [to win], official pick. I’m going to go Sean with this one. Sometimes you just feel like it’s time. It’s destiny.”

Sterling takes headlining honors in tonight’s UFC 292 headliner against O’Malley, while an undisputed strawweight title tilt between two-time and incumbent best, Zhang Weili, and challenger, Amanda Lemos takes co-main event status.

Joe Lauzon reveals he was denied final fight at UFC 292: ‘I was told my services were not needed’

Lauzon

Despite his best efforts, the UFC seemingly had no interest in booking Joe Lauzon for Saturday night’s highly anticipated return to Boston.

With 27 fights inside the Octagon and more than 17 years with the promotion, ‘J-Lau’ is one of the UFC’s most tenured and respected fighters. Unfortunately, none of that mattered when Lauzon called the UFC in hopes of getting booked on Saturday night’s UFC 292 card.

During a Q&A session on Friday at TD Garden, Lauzon revealed that he had made multiple attempts to get booked on the card for what could have been the last fight of his career, but the UFC was simply not interested in acquiring his services.

“I tried. I tried. It didn’t work out,” Lauzon said. “… I texted many, many times. I was told my services were not needed. … I would’ve fought whoever, but I really wanted to fight Chase Hooper. He had just beat Nick Fiore, who is another local guy. I feel like it’d be a really good matchup for me. It could’ve maybe been the last one, but it just didn’t come together. I tried. I really, really tried, but it didn’t work out” (h/t MMA Junkie).

Joe Lauzon Remains Open to Returning to the Octagon

With his own business flourishing, Joe Lauzon has no need to fight anymore but he would like to take the opportunity to step inside the Octagon when everything seemingly lines up. ‘J-Lau’ thought UFC 292 would be that perfect opportunity, but the promotion seemingly disagreed. Despite the slight, Lauzon is not necessarily finished fighting, but he’s by no means chomping at the bit to get back in there either.

“I don’t need to fight, so whatever makes sense,” Lauzon said. “If the location, the date, the opponent, if it all makes sense, I’m 100 percent down to fight again. But my gym is doing great. I don’t need to fight. It’s one of those things I really like doing. If it makes sense, I’m down (and) I’ll do it again. If we’re done, we’re done. It doesn’t matter. We’ll see.”

With a 28-15 record, the Ultimate Fighter season five alumnus has nothing left to prove, but it’s undeniably nice to see a fighter from a largely bygone era still itching to get in there and compete. It’s just too bad the promotion didn’t feel the same way.

‘Sugar’ Sean O’Malley is the latest fighter hoping to one day cash in inside the squared circle.

On Saturday night, O’Malley will step under the main event spotlight at TD Garden in Boston for a highly anticipated bantamweight title clash with reigning world champion Aljamain Sterling. After months of back and forth, the two men will finally strap on the four-ounce gloves for a winner take all clash that could see the end of one era and the emergence of a new.

Ahead of his return to the Octagon, Sean O’Malley, alongside long-time teammate and coach Tim Welch, appeared on the Full Send podcast to talk about his goals for the future, should he leave Bean Town with UFC gold wrapped around his waist.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, O’Malley revealed a desire to one day test his skills in the boxing ring, a route many fighters have traveled in recent years. As for who ‘Sugar’ wants to test his striking skills against in the sweet science, ‘Sugar’ has his sights set on Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis.

“Me and Tank is happening. That’s happening. Just like I said that I’ll be fighting for the world title, that I’ll be world champ,” O’Malley said. “I’ve been saying that for five or six years. People are like, ‘Shut up, that’s f*cking stupid.’ Me vs. Tank will happen. I’m pretty confident in that. Pretty positive. You know, a lot of things have to play out. Have to work out for both of us to kind of get there, but that fight will happen. It’ll be a massive fight.

“I believe I could win that fight too. I know how crazy that sounds. I f*cking getting it. I have that belief in myself that got me here so it’s not that crazy to think that I believe that I could beat him. That fight will happen.”

Sean O’Malley Can See Himself Sharing the Ring with Floyd Mayweather

Sean O’Malley could also see himself potentially stepping inside the ring with perhaps the greatest professional boxer in the history of the sport, Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather.

“Floyd’s a reality. He’s been fighting a lot of people. Floyd, Gervonta [Davis],” O’Malley added. “Ryan Garcia obviously wouldn’t be as big since he lost to Gervonta. So yeah, there’s really only two, but Floyd would be sweet.”

But Sean O’Malley knows that in order to score a big-money boxing match, he’ll have to deliver against arguably the best bantamweight in the history of the division this Saturday night.

That would be wild, but none of that happens if I don’t go out there and knock out Aljamain Sterling. That’s what it comes down to. I can’t get those big and not be a champ in the UFC. I have to be a champ first.”

Former UFC bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt still wants to settle his feud with one half of this UFC’s main event, Sean O’Malley.

Garbrandt and O’Malley have had the fair share of back-and-forth’s over the past few years, firing shots via interviews and social media as well as clashing at press conferences. At one point the fight did make sense, but since then the two career paths have gone in very different directions.

However, this hasn’t stopped the two from chirping at one another and recently Garbrandt would send out one last challenge – angling for a fight should O’Malley lose to Aljamain Sterling this weekend.

‘He has a weird infatuation with me you can get it once Aljo mops the canvas with you @SugaSeanMMA’ – Cody Garbrandt via his Twitter

Sean O’Malley rules out Cody Garbrandt fight

In what was rather bleak reply, O’Malley did rule out the possibility of the fight taking plavce after Garbrandt suffered another knockout loss.

“Dude, Cody is not getting that fight,” ‘Suga’ said. “When he said it, you could see it in his voice, it’s like (mumbles). But that fight’s not happening.”

“It doesn’t make sense for him to say that, you wonder if that’s CTE. He’s been knocked out five times in the last two years. … He was [the UFC champion]. That fight’s not happening, at least not next. He needs to—it just doesn’t make sense. It literally just doesn’t make sense. If you look at his record. No, that’s not next.” (H/T MMA Fighting)

O’Malley is set to challenge Sterling this weekend for the undisputed bantamweight title.

Garbrandt was also originally scheduled to fight this Saturday at UFC 292, but was forced to withdraw from his fight with Mario Bautista.

Merab Dvalishvili shows up to TD Garden for UFC 292 still sporting Sean O’Malley’s jacket

Merab DvalishviliTop-ranked bantamweight contender Merab Dvalishvili is still sporting the jacket he swiped from Sean O’Malley at UFC 288. On Saturday night, O’Malley will step inside the Octagon for his first crack at UFC gold as he meets current bantamweight world champion Aljamain Sterling in the UFC 292 main event. Merab Dvalishvili

Top-ranked bantamweight contender Merab Dvalishvili is still sporting the jacket he swiped from Sean O’Malley at UFC 288.

On Saturday night, O’Malley will step inside the Octagon for his first crack at UFC gold as he meets current bantamweight world champion Aljamain Sterling in the UFC 292 main event. Three months ago, Sterling and O’Malley first met inside the cage for a heated face-off mere moments after the ‘Funk Master’ successfully defended his title against Olympic gold medalist Henry Cejudo.

But on that night, much of the attention went to Sterling’s close friend and fellow bantamweight competitor, Merab Dvalishvili. During O’Malley’s intense staredown with Sterling, ‘Sugar’ removed his jacket and handed it to a bystander who was more than willing to hang onto it for him. As it turns out, that person was Merab Dvalishvili.

Capitalizing on the moment, ‘The Machine’ quickly stepped away from the scene, put on O’Malley’s coveted jacket, and began running around the cage. It was a scene that generated some big laughs from fans in attendance and those joining the conversation on Twitter.

In a hilarious turn of events, Merab Dvalishvili showed up for the UFC 292 pre-fight festivities still sporting the jacket he took off Sean O’Malley’s back in May.

Merab Dvalishvili’s Bantamweight Future Hinges on What Happens in the UFC 292 Main Event

Merab Dvalishvili is expected to be in the corner of Sterling when the main event matchup goes down this weekend. Aside from being close friends with the reigning bantamweight champ, Dvalishvili has a vested interest in the outcome. Sitting as the No. 1 ranked bantamweight, ‘The Machine’ expects to be the next man in line for a shot at the 135-pound crown. If O’Malley comes out on top on Saturday night, Dvalishvili will likely be the first to challenge him.

If Sterling retains, the ‘Funk Master‘ has already expressed his desire to flee the bantamweight division and move up to featherweight, leaving the 135-pound title vacant for Dvalishvili and another fighter of the UFC’s choosing to compete for it.

UFC 292 Sterling vs O'Malley betting preview

Returning to ‘Bean Town’ for a pay-per-view for the first time since 2018, the Octagon is slated to make a landing in Boston, Massachusetts for UFC 292 – with a championship double header set to take main card stage.

In the night’s headliner, undisputed bantamweight champion, Aljamain Sterling takes headlining honors in a fourth attempted defense of his divisional crown, as he meets the surging, current number two ranked, Sean O’Malley in a heated grudge match between the two.

And taking co-main event status in our opening championship salvo, two-time and incumbent strawweight best, Zhang Weili returns to the Octagon for the first time since November of last year – taking on streaking Brazilian finisher, Amanda Lemos in a highly-anticipated championship offing.

Furthermore on the night’s main card, undefeated Irish contender, Ian Machado Garry features in a welterweight bout opposite veteran contender, Neil Magny, while bantamweight favorite, Marlon Vera opens the main card viewing in an impromptu showdown with perennial challenger, Pedro Munhoz.

Aljamain Sterling remains a betting favorite to beat Sean O’Malley at UFC 292

Initially opening as a significant betting favorite to defeat O’Malley this weekend, incumbent bantamweight kingpin, Sterling is currently sitting as an impressive -250 favorite with Betway to defeat Montana striker, O’Malley – who is currently placed as a +200 betting underdog.

Separating himself as the most prolific bantamweight champion in the history of the promotion back in May, Uniondale native, Sterling turned in a record-setting third successful title defense, landing a close, split decision win over Henry Cejudo in Newark, New Jersey.

Riding a two-fight winning run into her first attempted strawweight title defense as part of her second reign, Chinese finisher, Weili managed to mint herself as division gold holder back in November of last year at Madison Square Garden, dispatching Carla Esparza with a brutal second round rear-naked choke win.

And defending her throne, Weili takes on Belem native, Lemos – who is riding a pair of consecutive submission and knockout wins over both Michelle Waterson-Gomez, as well as compatriot, Marina Rodriguez.

Tipped significantly as a live dog in her premier title tilt this weekend at UFC 292, Lemos is currently placed as a +250 betting underdog with Betway to defeat the current -330 betting favorite, Weili in an intriguing strawweight title fight.

Remaining on this weekend’s TD Garden card despite the cancellation of a heated bout with Geoff Neal, the above-mentioned Dubliner, Machado Garry will look to improve to 13-0 as a professional – and likely crack the welterweight top-10 in a reworked bout against Neil Magny.

And per Betway, the Portmarnock knockout artist is a -500 betting favorite to defeat the veteran Magny as he takes main card status on the East Coast at UFC 292.

Hoping to punch his ticket to a potential bantamweight title rematch challenger, O’Malley with a win at UFC 292, Ecuadorian favorite, Vera is riding as an impressive -200 with Betway to defeat Brazilian veteran, Munhoz as they open the main card of this weekend’s return to Boston.

Returning from a gruesome leg fracture two years ago, former undisputed middleweight champion, Chris Weidman features in a select preliminary slot, however, Betway currently offer odds of +210 for the Baldwin local to defeat division staple, Brad Tavares in his return to combat sports at UFC 292 this weekend.
