UFC heavyweight world champion Jon Jones recently hit the mat with one of the greatest BJJ specialists in the sport today, Gordon Ryan.

Next month, ‘Bones’ will return to the Octagon eight months removed from his stunning world-title-winning performance against perennial contender Ciryl Gane at UFC 285. This time, Jon Jones will be defending the gold as he meets perhaps the best heavyweight in the history of the division, Stipe Miocic. The pair are set to headline the promotion’s return to Madison Square Garden at UFC 295.

Before their highly anticipated clash in The Big Apple, Jon Jones appears to be putting in some work with submission grappling legend Gordon Ryan. Jones recently shared an image of himself with ‘The King’ on his Instagram stories.

“Great having King Ryan back in Albuquerque. Brother always comes with the best vibes and knowledge,” Jones wrote. “Ladies and gentlemen, do not count out a first round submission.”

Gordon Ryan Delivers a Dominant Performance in His Return to Action

Gordon Ryan returned to competition after more than a year on the shelf due to a severe case of strep throat that he contracted during a road trip to Abu Dhabi. After multiple rounds of antibiotic treatment, Ryan’s condition only worsened forcing him to undergo a tonsillectomy.

Unfortunately, Ryan’s health issues did not stop there as he began to experience stomach discomfort due to fungal growth in his small intestine.

On October 1, Gordon Ryan made his epic comeback at WNO 20: Night of Champions and successfully defended his heavyweight title against Patrick Gaudio. ‘The King’ delivered a dominant performance that saw him playing with his prey before scoring a slick submission by way of an arm bar.

Slated to make his own return to the Octagon at UFC 295 next month, undisputed heavyweight champion, Jon Jones has offered some praise and encouragement to former two-weight champion, Conor McGregor – claiming the Dubliner is looking “smooth” in new sparring footage released ahead of his 2024 combat sports comeback.

Jones, a former two-time undisputed light heavyweight champion, is slated to make his return at UFC 295 next month at Madison Square Garden, taking on former two-time division champion, Stipe Miocic in the pair’s long awaited heavyweight championship battle.

Returning triumphantly following a three-year Octagon lay-off back in March, Endicott native, Jones turned in a wholly dominant first round guillotine choke submission win over former interim heavyweight champion, Ciryl Gane to snatch the vacant divisional crown.

As for McGregor, the 35-year-old striker has been sidelined from the Octagon since fracturing his left tibia and fibula against Dustin Poirier back in July 2021, however, has been pegged to finally make his highly-anticipated comeback in the early months of next year – potentially at a targeted April UFC 300 card.

Providing an important update on his fighting future, McGregor appears to have once again entered the anti-doping testing pool of USADA, all whilst promising a one-sided win over expected return opponent, Michael Chandler.

“Find my targets,” Conor McGregor posted on his official Instagram account. “Hit them. F*ck the consequences. You’re going down. This is fighting. Sparring day with slick @grozdevnikolay. Always a banger of a spar with the slick fella. Submitted my stuff to (Jeff) Novitsky. Ball rolling (football emoji) see you soon you little light work b*tch.”

Stipe Miocic unsure on retirement after UFC 295 fight with Jon Jones we'll figure it out

Despite continued speculation that regardless of result at UFC 295 in November, former two-time heavyweight champion, Stipe Miocic will retire – the Ohio native now appears to be largely non-committal on hanging up his gloves after his clash with Jon Jones

Miocic, a former two-time undisputed heavyweight champion under the promotion’s banner, has been sidelined from the Octagon since he headlined UFC 260 back in 2021, suffering a second round KO loss to fellow former champion, Francis Ngannou, dropping his undisputed heavyweight crown.

And slated to now make his return to the sport atop a UFC 295 card in November at Madison Square Garden against incumbent heavyweight champion, Jones, Miocic has been tipped to likely call time on his illustrious career, regardless of result against the Endicott native.

Stipe Miocic remains non-committal on future after UFC 295

However, according to the former titleholder, retirement seems to be at the back of his mind at the moment ahead of the New York clash – claiming he plans to just figure out what is next for him once the event has come and gone.

“I’ve thought about that since after my first UFC fight,” Stipe Miocic told MMA Fighting. “Right now, I’m just focused on November 11. That’s all I care about. Once it’s done, we’ll figure it out.”

Largely regarded as arguably the greatest heavyweight fighter to ever compete in mixed martial arts, Miocic, who has twice struck gold under the promotion’s banner, has landed victories over the likes of Daniel Cormier, Francis Ngannou, Junior dos Santos, Alistair Overeem, Fabricio Werdum, Andrei Arlovski, Mark Hunt, Gabriel Gonzaga, and Philip de Fries to name a few.

Widely backed to suffer defeat to home town star, Jones in November, Miocic has been tipped to potentially spring an upset over the heavyweight champion by Ngannou – who has twice shared the Octagon with the veteran fan favorite.

Stipe Miocic confirms UFC contract prevented him from making boxing move I've tried

Former two-time undisputed heavyweight champion, Stipe Miocic has revealed the fact he is still tied into a contract with the UFC, he was unable to pursue a professional boxing debut ahead of his UFC 295 headliner against Jon Jones in November at Madison Square Garden.

Miocic, a former two-time undisputed heavyweight titleholder under the banner of the promotion, is slated to headline UFC 295 next month in New York City, taking on incumbent heavyweight best, Jones over the course of five rounds in a championship showdown.

Sidelined since 2021, Ohio native, Miocic has yet to feature since he suffered a second round knockout loss to promotional veteran, Francis Ngannou in their title fight rematch.

Stipe Miocic reveals UFC deal prevented boxing debut

And ahead of his championship outing against Jones, Miocic has revealed he attempted to follow in the footsteps of Cameroonian heavyweight Ngannou and make a boxing debut, however, his links to the UFC immediately scuppered those plans.

“Yeah, no, I definitely tried, you know,” Stipe Miocic told Bloody Elbow during a recent interview. “It just didn’t work out. They couldn’t find any agreement, I guess you would say. You’re in the contract with the UFC, so it’s kind of hard to go the opposite way, because you’re a mixed martial arts, not boxer.”

“It didn’t work out, you know, I’ve definitely tried,” Stipe Miocic explained. “The worst thing they could say is ‘No.’ But listen, I wish nothing but the best for Francis.”

Receiving backing to land an upset win over Endicott native Jones from Ngannou ahead of his championship fight return in ‘The Big Apple’, former two-time titleholder, Miocic has also noted his hope that Ngannou lands a victory over undisputed WBC heavyweight champion, Tyson Fury in their October boxing match at the end of this month in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
