Jon Jones

Many fight fans believe heavyweight champion Jon Jones could call it a career following his highly anticipated title tilt with Stipe Miocic at UFC 295 in November.

After dominating the light heavyweight division for nearly a decade, Jon Jones walked away from 205 determined to conquer the UFC’s biggest weight class. Three years later, ‘Bones’ did exactly that, scoring a quick two-minute submission against Ciryl Gane to claim the vacant heavyweight title at UFC 285 in March.

Next, Jon Jones is slated to square off with the general consensus heavyweight GOAT, Stipe Miocic, at the promotion’s 30th-anniversary showcase in Madison Square Garden. The bout is being dubbed by many as the biggest fight in the history of the division, but once Jones and Miocic settle their business inside the Octagon, what comes next?

With a lack of big-money fights left at heavyweight, many expect ‘Bones’ to walk away from the sport, win or lose, but former Strikeforce champion Josh Thomson doesn’t see that happening. In fact, he expects the 36-year-old Hall of Famer to continue competing well into his forties.

“Jon doesn’t need to fight very often because he makes so much money,” Thomson said during a recent episode of the WEIGHING IN podcast. “He can pick and choose when he wants to fight… He was talking about he may even retire after he beats Stipe. I can’t imagine him retiring.

“You go to the heavyweight division because it can prolong your career because you’re better than all of them. You don’t have to worry about them being faster than you and more athletic than you because you’re faster and more athletic, and you’re the same size,” Thomson continued. “I don’t know. I look at it as he could be there for a while, into his forties” (h/t MMA News).

Jon Jones Will Have Plenty of Contenders to Contend with Following UFC 295

Should Jon Jones earn a win over Stipe Miocic, there will be plenty of heavyweight contenders chomping at the bit to get their shot at the Octagon icon. Russian knockout artist Sergei Pavlovich will likely pose the biggest threat to ‘Bones’ in the division while UK sensation Tom Aspinall is quickly rising up the ranks and could very well be one big win away from title contention.

And, of course, there’s always Ciryl Gane who has established himself as something of a heavyweight gatekeeper in recent years.

Aside from Jon Jones vs. Stipe Miocic, fans who snag a ticket will also be treated to a light heavyweight title fight in the co-main event as former titleholder Jiri Prochazka returns to reclaim the crown he never lost. Jared Gordon will make his 14th walk to the Octagon at UFC 295 as he meets former Olympian Mark O. Madsen. ‘Flash’ has gone 1-2 with one no-contest in his last four outings. He returned four months later for a meeting with Bobby Green, but the bout was ruled a no-contest after an accidental clash of heads ended things early.

Alex Pereira opens as betting underdog against Jiri Prochazka ahead of UFC 295 fight

Despite landing at the light heavyweight limit successfully back in July, former undisputed middleweight champion, Alex Pereira has opened as a betting underdog to defeat Jiri Prochazka following the confirmation of their vacant championship for UFC 295 in November.

Pereira, a former undisputed middleweight champion under the organization’s banner, will vie for promotional spoils in November – this time a division higher, having landed at 205lbs in successful fashion back in July, defeating former undisputed titleholder, Jan Blachowicz in a close, split decision effort.

As for Czech Republic native, Prochazka, the returning former champion has been sidelined from competition since he struck gold against Alex Pereira’s teammate, the recently retired, Glover Teixeira back in June of last year in Singapore – rallying to land a fifth round rear-naked choke, sans hooks.

And following the confirmation of their UFC 295 title fight in November at Madison Square Garden, to many’s surprise, Pereira has opened as a significant betting underdog at +105 to defeat Prochazka, with the latter opening as a -138 betting favorite.

For punters and bettors who are keen to bet on UFC events, and in particular, the monstrous UFC 295 card in November at Madison Square Garden, a host of markets and sites are currently offering odds on the ‘Big Apple’ card.

First winning middleweight gold back in November of last year, Sao Paulo knockout artist, Alex Pereira stopped the first title reign of arch-rival, Israel Adesanya with a fifth round rallying effort, springing a standing TKO stoppage.

Dropping the belt back in April of this year in the pair’s championship re-run, Pereira, who was winning the bout on the judge’s scorecards, was caught with a counter right hook from Adesanya at the fence in the second round, suffering a massive KO defeat

Rebounding successfully in his light heavyweight bow at UFC 291 back in July, Pereira survived some adversity in the opening round in the form of a grappling onslaught from Blachowicz, comfortably oustriking the Pole in rounds two and three to land a judging victory.

Sidelined through a catastrophic shoulder injury, which UFC CEO, Dana White has time and time again described as the worst in promotional antiquity, Prochazka, under his own volition elected to officially vacate the light heavyweight crown ahead of a re-run with Teixeira in December of last year.

Enjoying a three-fight undefeated run since his Octagon landing back in 2020, former Rizin FF champion, Prochazka landed in the UFC with a second round KO win over former title challenger, Volkan Oezdemir on ‘Fight Island’ in the summer of that year.

In his sophomore outing in the organization, Prochazka earned his title fight with Teixeira off the back of another thunderous finish, this time stopping two-time title chaser, Dominick Reyes with a highlight-reel spinning back-elbow knockout – earning him plaudits as the Knockout of the Year.

Prochazka’s November walk against Alex Pereira will see him ride a 13-fight winning run into the clash, having enjoyed a splendid run with the Japanese-based promotion, Rizin FF before landing in the Octagon.

Anthony Smith plays up future clash with Alex Pereira I would smoke him UFC

Former light heavyweight title challenger, Anthony Smith has claimed if he ever landed a proposed grappling match with former middleweight champion, Alex Pereira outside of the UFC – he would handily “smoke” the Brazilian on the mats.

Smith, a former one-time light heavyweight title challenger under the promotion’s banner, snapped a disappointing two-fight losing skid on the main card of UFC Fight Night Singapore back in August, defeating two-time opponent, Ryan Spann in a close, split decision victory.

And as for Pereira, the Sao Paulo knockout artist made good on a light heavyweight divisional bow at UFC 291 back in July, defeating former undisputed champion, Jan Blachowicz in a close, split decision win in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Booking his Octagon return for November in the co-main event of UFC 295 in Madison Square Garden, former middleweight champion, Pereira will attempt to mint himself as the new light heavyweight champion as he takes on former champion, Czech Republic native, Jiri Prochazka in a vacant title showing.

Anthony Smith is prepared to take on Alex Pereira as soon as possible

Finding himself firmly inserted into a verbal rivalry with Pereira in recent weeks since his rematch win over Spann, Nebraska veteran, Smith – who was linked with a grappling clash with the former, confidently claimed he would brush Pereira aside with ease.

“I would grapple him (Alex Pereira) in my front yard right now,” Anthony Smith told MMA Fighting. “It doesn’t matter, I would smoke him in a grappling match, But isn’t he supposed to – I don’t know why he’s not talking trash to Jiri (Prochazka). Like, that’s the guy, I understand trying drum up some business and drum up some intrigue into what you’re doing and things in the division.”

“Someone needs to be in his (Alex Pereira) saying, ‘If you’re going to be talking all this sh*t, you need to do it to the guy that you could be fighting for the title,” Anthony Smith explained.

Finally booking his sophomore light heavyweight clash under the Octagon banner, former undisputed middleweight champion, Alex Pereira believes viewers are in for a “real spectacle” as he prepares to take on former titleholder, Jiri Prochazka in the pair’s vacant championship bout at UFC 295 in November.

Pereira, a former undisputed middleweight champion under the banner of the promotion, is slated to co-headline UFC 295 on November 11. in Madison Square Garden, taking on the returning, Prochazka over the course of five rounds as the pair battle to crown a light heavyweight champion – after the title was officially vacated by Jamahal Hill.

Earning his championship fight with the former Rizin FF gold holder later this year, Pereira rebounded from an April title fight knockout loss to Israel Adesanya, debuting at light heavyweight with a split decision win over former titleholder, Jan Blachowicz back in July in a title-eliminator clash.

Offering some words of warning to Pereira ahead of their ‘Big Apple’ matchup, Prochazka, who holds a victory over the former’s training partner and close friend, former champion, Glover Teixeira – anticipated another successful outing against a Brazilian in November.

“I am glad to be able to face this Brazilian challenge again, even if in a different coat,” Jiri Prochazka posted on his official X account. “But that doesn’t change the fact that I will prepare well for this challenge and go for the win. It’s not just about the belt anymore, it’s about the performance and the path to victory.”

Jiri Prochazka

Jiri Prochazka is more than ready to run through another Brazilian if it means reclaiming the light heavyweight title.

On Wednesday, UFC CEO Dana White made a series of blockbuster announcements regarding the promotion’s last two pay-per-views of the year. On November 11, former light heavyweight champion Jiri Prochazka will return to the Octagon for the first time in nearly a year in a bid to regain the 205-pound title that he never lost. Standing in his way will be Brazilian knockout artist and former middleweight champion, Alex Pereira.

The pair will feature in the co-main event of UFC 295, emanating from the world’s most famous arena, Madison Square Garden.

In June 2022, Jiri Prochazka captured the light heavyweight title in an instant classic with the former champion Glover Teixeira at UFC 275. The two fighters were set to run it back in December, but ‘Denisa’ suffered a shoulder injury that took him out of the fight, forcing him to vacate the 205-pound crown.

With the belt once again vacated following an injury sustained by Prochazka’s successor, Jamahal Hill, ‘Denisa’ will have the opportunity to make things right and once again claim the light heavyweight title.

Jiri Prochazka Will Be Ready for a Fight with Glover Teixeira’s Protégé

Meeting Jiri Prochazka in the co-main clash is Alex Pereira, a heavy-hitting Brazilian who has forged a close relationship with Prochazka’s last opponent, Glover Teixeira. The recently retired Teixeira will undoubtedly be in Pereira’s corner come UFC 295, giving Prochazka not one, but two Brazilian baddies to contend with in his highly anticipated return.

“I am glad to be able to face this Brazilian challenge again, even if in a different coat,” Prochazka wrote on X. “But that doesn’t change the fact that I will prepare well for this challenge and go for the win. It’s not just about the belt anymore, it’s about the performance and the path to victory.”

Making his Octagon debut in the summer of 2020, Jiri Prochazka only needed two big wins over Volkan Oezdemir and Dominick Reyes to secure his first shot at the light heavyweight title. Submitting Teixeira in a back-and-forth war to capture the crown, his title reign was cut frustratingly short after suffering a devastating shoulder injury.

‘Denisa’ goes into his second UFC title tilt with a 3-0 record inside the Octagon and 11-1 overall. Prochazka is almost eight years removed from his last defeat. He’ll look to keep that streak alive when he meets former GLORY Kickboxing world champion Alex Pereira at MSG in NYC this November.
