Brendan Schaub claims Jon Jones should've been stripped of his title after UFC 295 fight withdrawal

Former heavyweight contender and The Ultimate Fighter victor, Brendan Schaub has claimed the UFC “missed the boat” on stripping incumbent divisional champion, Jon Jones of gold following his exit from UFC 295 due to injury, claiming the title should now be vacant in the Endicott native’s absence.

Jones, the current undisputed heavyweight champion, was slated to make his return to the Octagon at UFC 295 next month in New York City, however, a pectoral tendon tear has forced the pound-for-pound number one off the Madison Square Garden card, cancelling a long-awaited bout with Stipe Miocic.

And as a result, in Jones’ expected eight month absence from active competition, the UFC have introduced an interim title to the division, which will be on the line at UFC 295, between surging heavyweight new-blood, Sergei Pavlovich, and Tom Aspinall.

Brendan Schaub claims Jon Jones should’ve been stripped of his UFC gold

Whilst the introduction of an interim crown to the division has been heralded – as has the booking of a bout between Pavlovich, and Aspinall, UFC alum turned podcast host and standup comedian, Schaub claims Jones should have been stripped of the undisputed heavyweight championship.

“UFC missed the boat on this a little, not stripping [Jon Jones of the title],” Brendan Schaub said on his YouTube channel. “I guess, yeah, strip him of the belt. When he beat Ciryl Gane, he’s the heavyweight champ, when your champ is out at least a year with this injury, there should not be an interim title fight. It should just be the vacant belt.”

“When you think about Jon Jones and Stipe (Miocic), I guess the rumor, anybody who’ close to the game knows that the plan was both these guys to retire so whether it was win or loss on either end, Stipe was planning on retiring. Jon Jones was going to do the same thing so either way, if their fight were to go down like it was supposed to in two weeks, you still don’t really have a heavyweight champion.” (H/T MMA News)

Sharing his thoughts on the cancellation of his fight with Jones, Ohio veteran, Miocic claims the UFC took the decision to compete for an interim title next month away from him – in favor of rebooking a long-anticipated fight with the former at some stage next year.

Jon Jones is going under the knife on Friday (October 27) after suffering a devastating pectoral tear while training for his now-delayed return to the Octagon.

‘Bones’ was originally scheduled to defend his UFC heavyweight championship for the first time against the division’s consensus GOAT, Stipe Miocic, on November 11 in Madison Square Garden. Instead, Jones will be laid up for the next eight months after suffering a pectoral injury during a relatively harmless sparring session.

Before going in for surgery, Jon Jones shot a quick video to share with fans, thanking them for their support and hoping for the best.

“Alright, guys. Things are about to get pretty real for me in a little bit,” Jones said in the clip. “I appreciate your support. I’m praying for a clean surgery and a quick recovery.”

Jon Jones Still Plans on Fighting Stipe Miocic

Earlier this week, Jon Jones addressed his withdrawal from UFC 295 and personally apologized to his scheduled opponent.

“Obviously, very sad situation, very upset,” Jones said in a video on Instagram. “But I’ve been through a lot of things in life, and injuries are a part of being an athlete. I want to thank the UFC for getting me in to one of the best doctors in the country. I wanted to say thank you to Stipe Miocic for all the work that he’s put in. Also, sorry to Stipe and his team. Like I said, this comes with the territory.”

In the wake of Jones’ injury, UFC CEO Dana White revealed that top-ten heavyweight contenders Tom Aspinall and Sergei Pavlovich would slide into the co-main event spot at UFC 295 to crown an interim champion. The winner of that bout will then go on to face the winner of Jones and Miocic when their fight is rescheduled for some time in 2024.

“I guess it will be Stipe and I at a later date, and that’s my plan,” Jones continued. “Hopefully, these other heavyweights, Aspinall and Sergei, put it on a great show for you guys. I may even show up to the event to watch. But I love you all, and hey, your boy Jon Jones is doing OK.”

Jon Jones confirms plans to fight Stipe Miocic in UFC return from injury it will be him and I later on

As he prepares for a surgical procedure to address a pectoral tendon tear ahead of his Octagon return next month at UFC 295, incumbent heavyweight champion, Jon Jones has addressed his failed fight with ex-champion, Stipe Miocic, claiming he will be fighting the Ohio native in his immediate comeback to the sport.

Jones, a former two-time light heavyweight champion and current undisputed heavyweight champion, was slated to make his return to the Octagon next month in the main event of UFC 295 at Madison Square Garden, defending his heavyweight title in a homecoming clash with former two-time champion, Miocic in a long-awaited title affair.

However, earlier this week, UFC CEO, Dana White confirmed how Jones has been pulled from his November fight with Miocic, after tearing a pectoral tendon “off the bone” whilst wrestling ahead of his comeback bout.

And as a result, Miocic has also been pulled from the event, in favor of a makeshift interim title fight between Sergei Pavlovich, and Tom Aspinall in a new co-headlining bracket in New York City.

Over the course of the week to boot, the above-mentioned, White confirmed how the victor between Pavlovich and Aspinall would have to lay in wait to earn a shot against either Jones or Miocic – with the incumbent heavyweight champion now confirming his plan to fight the latter in his return from injury.

“I guess it will be Stipe (Miocic) and I at a later date, and that’s my plan,” Jon Jones said in a video posted on his official social media. “Hopefully, these other heavyweights, (Tom) Aspinall and Sergei (Pavlovich), put on a great show for you guys. I may even show up to the event [UFC 295] to watch. But, I love you all, and hey, your boy Jon Jones is doing OK.”

Snapping a three-year-plus hiatus from the sport back in March of this year, Endicott native, Jones scooped the vacant heavyweight title with a stunning opening round guillotine choke submission win over former interim champion, Ciryl Gane.

Ex-UFC Champion Shares His Theory Behind Jon Jones’ Devastating Injury: ‘Your body’s not prepared for that’

Jon Jones

UFC Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier offered his take on the devastating injury that forced Jon Jones to withdraw from his highly anticipated clash against Stipe Miocic.

Eight months after capturing the UFC heavyweight championship with a quick finish over perennial contender Ciryl Gane, ‘Bones’ was expected to defend his title for the first time against Miocic at the promotion’s 30th-anniversary showcase, UFC 295 on November 11 in Madison Square Garden.

Sadly, that is no longer the case after UFC CEO Dana White revealed that Jones had torn his pectoral muscle while sparring, an injury that will keep him on the shelf well into 2024.

As a result, top-ten contenders Tom Aspinall and Sergei Pavlovich will slide into the co-main event slot to crown an interim heavyweight champ in Jon Jones’ absence.

Daniel Cormier Suggests Jon Jones’ Injury was due to poor body management

Sharing his theory behind Jones’ injury, Daniel Cormier suggested that even after taking off years to properly bulk up for the heavyweight division, the former light heavyweight champ’s body may have not been prepared for the workload ‘Bones’ attempted to lay on it in preparation for Miocic.

“I think more than anything, this could be related to the different approach to this one,” Cormier said in a video on YouTube. “You can take time to do whatever it is you want to do. Jones said he was bulking, he was getting prepared to become a heavyweight.  So, he gained all this weight and he trained and he fought Ciryl Gane and he fought him for about two minutes.

Now though, he recognizes the challenge ahead of him, so he figured, ‘I’ve got to put in more work, I’ve got to take this new body and I’ve got to teach this new body to train like the 205-pound body because I know the challenge is so big.’ Well, your body’s not prepared for that. Your body’s not ready for that type of workload if you haven’t been doing it.

Cormier was also admittedly confused by the nature of the injury, adding that the sparring footage showed Jones engaging in some pretty routine wrestling exercises when disaster struck.

“Here’s (what) I wonder in regards to the injury,” Cormier added. “I saw the video and that looks like a very common wrestling situation… I have never seen someone almost tear the pec in a pretty basic wrestling situation. Your arm gets extended, things can happen. Shoulder, sure. Pop a shoulder, other things like that. But I haven’t really seen the pectoral muscle as many times as you would see some of these other injuries.”

Doctor claims Jon Jones may return to UFC in just over four months: ‘He can come back a little bit sooner’

Jon Jones can return from pectoral injury in just four months come back sooner UFC 295

Despite initial claims from UFC CEO, Dana White how incumbent undisputed heavyweight champion, Jon Jones may face up to eight months on the sidelines after suffering a torn pectoral tendon ahead of his return to the Octagon next month, a sport surgeon has halved the recovery time for the Endicott native, claiming a comeback could be possible as soon as just less than six months time.

Jones, the incumbent undisputed heavyweight champion under the organization’s banner, was slated to make a return to the Octagon at UFC 295 next month in a title fight defense against former two-time gold holder, Stipe Miocic.

However, this week, the aforenoted, White confirmed how Jones had been forced from his fight with Miocic after tearing a pectoral tendon “off the bone” during wrestling training ahead of his fight with the Ohio native.

And as a result, Jones and Miocic have both been pulled from the Madison Square Garden card, in place of an interim heavyweight title fight between Russian knockout artist, Sergei Pavlovich, and British talent, Tom Aspinall.

Jon Jones offered recovery lifeline after UFC 295 exit

Facing an extended period away from the sport ahead of a rebooked title fight with Miocic, Jones’ prognosis may have just received a boost from Board Certified Orthopedic Sports Surgeon, David Abbasi, who claims Jones may return in just over a period of four months.

“Brutal news about Jon Jones, the fact that he tore his pec muscle off of the bone,” Abbasi posted on his official X account. “This is an injury sometimes we see with bench press on the way down. It can also happen when your arm gets overly stretched, places too much stress on the tendon, and it will tear and retract into the chest and that’s the reason you need to have surgery on that sooner rather than later, because it can actually scar in and you’re unable to stretch it back for the repair.”

“I do think the timeline of the eight months seems a little bit long,” Abbasi continued. “A lot of these can get a full recovery in four-to-six months. From my personal experience, a lot of times these guys are jumping the gun, because they feel so good. So, hopefully he can come back a little bit sooner but definitely bad news with Jon Jones, but he did need to get this addressed now.”

Dana White claims interim title fight offer to Stipe Miocic at UFC 295 would be ‘Completely disrespectful’

Stipe Miocic interim title fight offer for UFC 295 would be "completely disrespectful" dana white

Following the cancellation of incumbent heavyweight champion, Jon Jones’ title fight defense against Stipe Miocic at UFC 295 next month – according to promotional CEO, Dana White, the possibility of offering the former an interim title fight in order to keep him on the card was never considered.

Jones, the current undisputed heavyweight champion, was slated to make his comeback to the Octagon at UFC 295 next month at Madison Square Garden, taking on former two-weight champion, Miocic in New York City.

However, yesterday, the above-mentioned, White confirmed how Jones had suffered a pectoral tendon tear whilst training for his fight with Miocic, resulting in the cancellation of his championship bout.

And as a result, the promotion have since put together an interim championship pairing between the surging division challengers, Sergei Pavlovich, and Tom Aspinall in a co-main event bracket – while a vacant light heavyweight title fight between former gold holders, Jiri Prochazka, and Alex Pereira takes main event honors.

Dana White refuses interim title offer to Stipe Miocic at UFC 295

With Miocic now officially off the card with the view to booking him in a future title fight with Jones sometime in 2024, promotional boss, White claimed it would be a form of “complete disrespect” to offer the former two-time undisputed champion an interim title opportunity.

“Stipe’s (Miocic) not fighting for an interim title, you know what I mean?” Dana White told assembled media this week. “Jones said, ‘I wanna fight Stipe.’ I said, ‘You’re fighting Stipe.’ You have the greatest heavyweight of all time versus the greatest mixed martial artist of all time. This is a legacy fight for both of those guys.”

“I mean, to even call Stipe (Miocic) and ask Stipe to fight for an interim title is, you know, complete disrespect,” Dana White explained. “This is a fight for two legends, legacy, two of the greatest to ever do it. Fans wanna see it, I wanna see it, and they both wanna do it.”
