Leon Edwards scoffs at Belal Muhammad title fight after UFC 296 he should not be next

Leon Edwards hs scoffed at the possibility of a championship fight rematch with rival, Belal Muhammad off the back of his unanimous decision win over Colby Covington at UFC 296 over the course of the weekend at UFC 296, claiming the Illinois native doesn’t deserve a chance at gold.

Edwards, the current undisputed welterweight champion, headlined UFC 296 over the course of the weekend in Las Vegas, landing a one-sided unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 49-46) win over former interim champion, Covington in the pair’s grudge match.

As for Muhammad, the Roufusport staple has been guaranteed the next shot at divisional spoils following a decision shutout win over former title chaser, Gilbert Burns on short-notice back in May at UFC 288, having previously fought Edwards to boot.

Headlining a UFC Apex facility card against the Birmingham native back in 2021, Muhammad, who is in the midst of a stunning 10-fight unbeaten run, saw his bout with then-contender, Edwards end via ‘No Contest’ due to an accidental eye poke in the second round of their main event clash.

Leon Edwards doubts Belal Muhammad rematch next

However, despite Muhammad’s guarantee of a title charge, Edwards has ruled out such a fight, claiming the former likely doesn’t deserve it despite his streak, and looking toward other challengers instead.

“Nah, there are definitely other options,” Leon Edwards told assembled media after UFC 296. “I don’t feel like Belal (Muhammad) should be next. I’ve done it before. I’ve won like 10 fights and didn’t get a title shot. So, what makes him different or more privileged.”

“So, Colby’s (Covington) already skipped the line already, let’s see who’s next,” Leon Edwards explained. “But like I said, this is the ‘Rocky’ era, it’s my era now and I’ll keep reigning, whoever’s next. It doesn’t matter, they’re all similar styles anyways. All boxers and wrestlers, it’s what I’ve built my career on. So, whoever comes next, it’s whatever, you know.”

Former two-time undisputed middleweight champion, Israel Adesanya has backed Sean Strickland after his former opponent engaged in a heated brawl with incoming opponent and UFC 297 headliner, Dricus du Plessis over the weekend at UFC 296, congratulating him on his “sucker punch”.

Adesanya, a former two-time undisputed middleweight champion, has been sidelined since he headlined UFC 293 back in September in Australia, dropping his title in a one-sided unanimous decision loss to Strickland – becoming the first titleholder in Octagon antiquity to lose his championship twice in the space of a year.

Expected to take a long-term hiatus, Adesanya claimed after his loss to Strickland that he may remain sidelined until 2027 at the very earliest, before claiming a potential future at a UFC Fight Night Saudi Arabia event in March may appeal to him.

Sharing his thoughts on a massive brawl between the above-mentioned, Strickland and du Plessis in the crowd at UFC 296 over the weekend, Adesanya praised the altercation between the duo.

“I mean, at least he didn’t call him a n*****,” Israel Adesanya said on his YouTube channel. “Fully respectable champions and title challengers, that’s what they did. ‘Oh, Israel is so embarrassing as a champion. Goes in the cage, meh, meh, meh.’ Then this si what they do.”

“They sucker punch them,” Israel Adesanya continued. “He actually did. He [Sean Strickland] jumped over the chair, sucker punched him [Dricus du Plessis] and they had a little scrap. I liked it. I like a sh*t show. Don’t we all? We all see a car crash, we won’t look away.”

Miesha Tate welcomes fight with Irene Aldana after UFC 296 I'll see you soon

Linked with a return against a host of former foes at UFC 300 in April of next year, former undisputed bantamweight champion, Miesha Tate appears to be weighing-up a fight with former title challenger, Irene Alanda next, off the back of the Mexican’s win over Karol Rosa at UFC 296 over the weekend.

Tate, a former bantamweight champion under the banner of the UFC and the now-defunct, Strikeforce, most recently turned in a third round rear-naked choke win over Julia Avila earlier this month, landing her first finish since winning the title against Holly Holm back in 2016.

Earning the number eleven rank at the bantamweight limit with her submission victory, Washington native, Tate has been linked with both rematches against Ronda Rousey, and the above-mentioned, Holm – appearing interested in the possibility of fighting the latter as soon as UFC 300 next year

“I think it’s a great time,” Miesha Tate told said. “I think that sounds reasonable. I think I got a little bit of an injury leaving that fight [with Julia Avila]. So, I’ve got to get an MRI and check myself out just make sure. But it’s not very severe… I’ve been walking around, and I think I’m actually all right. I think I’ll be OK. So if I can do that, then I think Holly (Holm) would be a fantastic one.”

“She was kind of like edging me on the feet, I’ll give her that,” Miesha Tate explained. “I absolutely smashed her on the ground. So, anyway, to answer your question, I think it would be fun to run that one back.”

And tuning into UFC 296 over the weekend, Tate watched on as Mexican striker, Aldana landed a decision win over Brazilian contender, Rosa in her first fight since dropping a title charge to common-foe, Amanda Nunes back in June, in a Fight of the Night clash.

Lambasting long-time rival, Colby Covington ahead of UFC 296 over the course of the weekend, heavyweight champion, Jon Jones has offered to gift undisputed welterweight titleholder, Leon Edwards a brand new motorcycle, celebrating the Birmingham native’s decision shoutout win over the former.

Jones, the current heavyweight champion and former two-time light heavyweight gold holder, has been sidelined since he headlined UFC 285 back in March, landing the vacant heavyweight title with a dominant opening round guillotine choke submission win over former interim champion, Ciryl Gane.

Ruled from a scheduled return at UFC 295 last month at Madison Square Garden, former pound-for-pound number one, Jones was forced from a comeback fight against Stipe Miocic after he suffered a pectoral tendon tear ahead of the clash.

And heavily criticizing Covington ahead of UFC 296, Jones took issue with the Clovis native who mocked Edwards’ late father, who was shot dead inside a London nightclub when the former was just 13 years of age.

“Couldn’t agree with (Sean) Strickland anymore,” Jon Jones posted on his official X account. Colby (Covington) is by far the most heinous human being I’ve ever encountered in my life. I won’t even get into personal stories, he’s an absolutely terrible human being.”

“Leon Edwards, I couldn’t be more happy for you,” Jon Jones posted on his official X account. “As an American champion in this game, I salute you, that was truly a job well done. Let me know if I can gift you a motorcycle or something for Christmas. Feel like I owe you one.”

Tony Ferguson releases statement after UFC 296 loss calls for retirement keep the faith

Former interim lightweight champion, Tony Ferguson has urged fans and supporters to “keep the faith” after last night’s one-sided unanimous decision loss to Paddy Pimblett at UFC 296 last night, despite calls from promotional CEO, Dana White for the Oxnard veteran to retire from active competition.

Ferguson, a former interim lightweight champion and perennial division contender, featured on the main card of UFC 296 last night in Las Vegas, suffering his seventh consecutive loss in the form of a lopsided decision defeat to Liverpool native, Pimblett.

The defeat came as Ferguson’s second since the summer, having previously dropped an eventual third round arm-triangle submission loss to Bobby Green back in July at UFC 291 in a lightweight scrap.

And following his loss, Ferguson, who was described as appearing “old” and “slow” by promotional leader, White, was urged to call time on his storied and memorable career in the sport.

“I would love to see Tony (Ferguson) retire,” Dana White told assembled media after UFC 296. “When you talk about a skid, you look at the guys he fought, too. That plays a factor into it and how did he look right up until he lost? Tony tonight looked like he should retire.”

“Listen, Tony’s been an absolute warrior and a dog in this sport,” White continued. “I don’t want to disrespect him by publicly talking about him retiring but I would love to see him retire. That’s really where my head’s at.”
