Fans urged to uprise to force UFC fight between Jon Jones and Tom Aspinall

According to former two-division champion, Daniel Cormier, a fan “uprising” by the end of this month could force the UFC’s hand into a long-awaited fight between heavyweight stars, Jon Jones, and Tom Aspinall.

Later this month in Manchester, interim heavyweight champion, Aspinall returns to co-headline UFC 304, taking on perennial contender, Curtis Blaydes in a defense of his interim crown as the duo lock horns for a second time.

And long-linked with a title unification fight against the previously mentioned, Jones, Atherton native, Aspinall will lay in wait for his chance to unify the belts, with the former expected to headline UFC 309 in November against the returning, Stipe Miocic in a rescheduled showdown at Madison Square Garden.

Despite the fact the duo are on separate collision courses with altering foes, the above-mentioned, Cormier claims if Aspinall manages to land a stunning victory over Blaydes at UFC 304, an uprising from fans could force the hand of the UFC to book him against Jones.

“Could you imagine if Tom Aspinall just washes out Curtis Blaydes,” Daniel Cormier said on his YouTube channel. “Then the firestorm that would start to gather for him to fight [Jon] Jones? For there to truly be an uprising, it would have to be Aspinall destroying Blaydes. Only because of this: You’ve see Curtis Blaydes lose before, so people would think, ‘Oh, he beat Tom Aspinall, but we’ve seen him get beat by Francis (Ngannou) and lose to other guys.’”

“…There may be such a fan uprising that the UFC may have to be forced to make Jones vs. Aspinall,” Cormier explained. “I don’t know what that would mean for my man Stipe (Miocic), but it sounds like if it does happen, he’s okay with it.”

Who do you think wins in a future fight: Jon Jones or Tom Aspinall?

Paddy Pimblett looks to continue his undefeated streak in the UFC when he returns on July 27 at UFC 304.

“The Baddy” is sure to get an incredible reaction when he makes the walk in Manchester, despite it being the early hours of the morning.

His opponent, while known as a fan favorite on the roster, will be welcomed to England as the away fighter, but this won’t phase the #15-ranked lightweight.

In fact, his next outing is set to be the first of a new chapter in his career after King Green, formerly known as Bobby Green, announced that he had officially changed his name on social media.

Paddy Pimblett Reacts To UFC 304 Opponent Changing His Name To King Green

Green had laid out his plans in the past for wanting to change his first name to his longtime fight moniker in order to show just how far he has come in his career and what he has been able to achieve.

July 27 will be his 50th professional fight, but flying to England to face a star like Pimblett after changing his name to King is sure to be one of the most memorable.

It didn’t take long for his opponent to catch wind of this news, as “The Baddy” prepares to face the same man under a different name.

He posted on social media to give his thoughts on this change for Green and, suffice to say, he won’t be following suit anytime soon

“This mushroom has actually changed his name to King so yous can officially call me the Kingslayer on July 28th”

UFC 304 will be headlined by two title fights, with welterweight champion Leon Edwards’ rematch against Belal Muhammad and interim heavyweight titleholder Tom Aspinall’s second dance opposite Curtis Blaydes following Green vs. Pimblett.

Paddy Pimblett has given a funny reaction after his UFC 304 opponent Bobby Green legally changed his name to King Green.

Green has talked about changing his name to King, which is his nickname and he did just that before his UFC 304 fight against Pimblett.

After Green changed his name, Pimblett took to Instagram to share his own post saying he will call himself the King Slayer after he beats Bobby Green in Manchester, England.

“This mushroom has actually changed his name to King so yous can officially call me the Kingslayer on July 28th,” Pimblett wrote.

Pimblett enters his UFC 304 fight against Green as a +130 underdog.

Paddy Pimblett Believes Bobby Green’s Chin Is Gone

After Paddy Pimblett was booked to fight Bobby Green at UFC 304, the Brit spoke about the fight and is confident he will defeat the American to enter the lightweight ranks.

Pimblett believes Green’s chin is gone and expects to KO Green at UFC 304 in a statement-making win.

“He’s got very good striking,” Pimblett said to. “He’s got good hands, but his chin’s gone after what happened with Jalin Turner. Jim Miller’s no knockout artist, and he wobbled him once or twice in that fight on UFC 300. I think that is off Jalin Turner absolutely obliterating Bobby Green’s skull into the canvas.

“His striking’s very good, his takedown defense is good, and that’s what he’s going to try and do. He’s just going to try and use his takedown defense to keep it on the feet because he thinks he’ll outstrike me. As I say, his chin’s gone, so strike with me. We’ll see what happens. I can see me knocking him out. I can see me submitting him,” Pimblett added.

Paddy Pimblett is coming off a decision win over Tony Ferguson to improve to 5-0 in the UFC and 21-3 as a pro.

Welcome to MMA News Today, a daily feature running down the most interesting stories in the world of mixed martial arts. For July 8, 2024, we’re taking a look at:

  • White argues that UFC is the best at what they do rather than a monopoly
  • There’s a new “King” in the lightweight division
  • Top 15 lightweights scheduled for UFC’s return to Paris

Dana White Insists UFC Isn’t A Monopoly Because ‘Anyone’ Can Start An MMA Promotion

During the long process of the antitrust lawsuit that was filed against the UFC by former members of the roster, the case was granted class certification.

While a settlement was eventually reached, many concluded that the class certification validated the allegation that the UFC holds a monopoly over the sport. Unsurprisingly, the promotion disagreeds with that notion.

Dana White spoke out on this during a recent interview with Fox News, where he debated the idea that the MMA leader prevents others from being able to compete at its level.

He made the case that the UFC is simply the best at what it does, but that it’s not stopping others from trying to replicate the success achieved by the sport’s leading promotion.

“People have called us ‘monopoly’ and all this stuff for years. We’re not a monopoly, we’re just the best,” White said. “We’re the best at what we do, there’s no barrier to entry, anyone could get into this.

“You could start a league tomorrow and pay the guys whatever you want, you can do whatever you want but a lot of smart, talented, big business moguls have got into this sport and tried to compete with me and they couldn’t do it,” White continued. “But everybody — there’s no barrier to entry, anyone can get into this thing tomorrow.”

Bobby Green Officially Changes His Name To ‘King’ Green Ahead Of UFC 304 Return

Islam Makhachev sits atop the UFC’s lightweight division as the world champion and pound-for-pound best fighter in the sport. Now, however, 155 pounds has a new king.

#15-ranked Bobby Green made his intentions clear in the past that he was looking to change his name, but it has now been made official.

When he makes the walk at UFC 304 later this month to face Paddy Pimblett, he will do so under a new name, King Green.

He gave fans a glimpse of the official documentation on Instagram, which clearly shows that from this point on, he will answer to King and King only.

Renato Moicano Set To Face Benoît Saint Denis In Paris Over Five Rounds

The Octagon is set to return to the French capital for a third consecutive year, with UFC Paris going down at the Accor Arena on September 28.

Ag. Fight reported that top 15 lightweights will face off in Paris with France’s Benoît Saint Denis taking on Brazil’s Renato Moicano. MMA Junkie later confirmed that the contest is set to take place over five rounds.

It remains to be seen whether that marks the break of Ciryl Gane’s streak of Paris headliners, or if “God of War” and his Brazilian counterpart are set for a five-round co-headliner.

Moicano is riding a three-fight win streak from the #10 spot, while Saint Denis, who is two spots below him in the rankings, will look to bounce back from his defeat to Dustin Poirier in March.

Jorge Masvidal eyes Nate Diaz grudge fight in UFC return hopefully he still has the belt

Returning to combat sports this weekend in a rematch against fellow UFC alum, Nate Diaz, former title challenger, Jorge Masvidal has staked his claim once more for a grudge fight with current welterweight champion, Leon Edwards upon his planned Octagon return.

Masvidal, the inaugural symbolic BMF champion under the banner of the UFC and a former two-time welterweight title challenger, is slated to make his return to combat sports tomorrow in Anaheim, taking on the above-mentioned, Diaz in a professional boxing rematch.

First fighting the Stockton native back in 2019, Masvidal landed the inaugural BMF crown with a third round doctor’s stoppage win over Diaz, after opening a significant laceration on his right eyebrow in their Madison Square Garden headliner.

The victory came as part of an impressive run of victories over Ben Askren, and prior to that, Darren Till in a trip to London for another main event clash.

And backstage on that ‘Fight Night’ billed event, Masvidal was involved in a now-infamous physical altercation with the previously mentioned, Edwards – with the duo failing to ever settle their differences.

Seeing a UFC 269 grudge match with the Birmingham native failing to materialize amid an injury setback, Masvidal has now staked his claim for a reworked fight with Edwards in an expected return to the promotion – and notably, hopes a title is involved in the clash.

“It’s lacking something, man,” Jorge Masvidal said of the UFC welterweight division during an interview with Michael Bisping. “That something is your boy right here. Being in tip-top shape, being violent and putting on some f*cking great fights. Just give them to me, man. I’m gonna eat these motherf*ckers up like tacos, just put them in front of me and I’ll lay some people out. I don’t see nothing that I couldn’t take on.”

“I would love to fight Leon (Edwards),” Jorge Masvidal continued. “Hopefully he still has the belt when I come back around [to the UFC], let’s see what happens, man.”

Tom Aspinall plans horrendous knockout win over Curtis Blaydes at UFC 304

UFC interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall is confident he will KO Curtis Blaydes at UFC 304 to put their rivalry to an end.

Aspinall and Blaydes fought back in the main event of UFC London in July of 2022 when Aspinall blew out his knee just seconds into the fight. It was his first loss in the UFC, and now two years later, the two will be rematching in the co-main event of UFC 304, with Tom Aspinall putting his interim title on the line.

Heading into the fight, Aspinall is confident that he won’t just beat Blaydes but will KO him in horrendous fashion.

“It’s Heavyweight MMA and anything can happen, I feel like I always have to say that just to cover all aspects,” Aspinall told Prime Casino. “However, I feel like this ends with an absolutely horrendous knockout and me being the winner. That’s how I definitely see it going.”

If Aspinall does KO Blaydes at UFC 304 as he says, it would be a statement-making win for him.

Tom Aspinall not worried about Jon Jones fight

If Tom Aspinall does KO Curtis Blaydes at UFC 304, a fight against Jon Jones could be next to unify the heavyweight division.

However, Aspinall says he isn’t focused on that fight, and rather is just worried about beating Blaydes and then whatever happens after that, happens.

“This is a big fight for me, mentally as well as physically,” Aspinall said. “This is the only loss I have got in the UFC, and I lost it in a very unpleasant way because of the injury and then being unable to even train for the next year, or walk for the next few months.

“I don’t want that to be the final chapter for me and Curtis Blaydes, I want to put this to bed once and for all and that’s what I am looking to do,” he concluded. “So I am very motivated for this one.”

Aspinall enters the bout as with a 14-3 record and is coming off a KO win over Sergei Pavlovich in November to become the interim heavyweight champion.
